You are absolutely right. No point in buying a 5 year old board and CPU when you can get something new with similar performance for the same or less and simply have a better experience.

This has been going on in the US as well, it seems that everyone has caught on to the whole "buy a OEM system and slot in a graphics card" move and everyone just thought that their PCs are now worth more because of it. I'm in Ohio and I (am lucky enough to) have a Micro Center near me and every time I run into an OEM system I have to ask the question "do I get a ryzen 5 1600 for $50 and a new system or this for my clients?" and just about every time I run with Ryzen over the OEM system since it's only about $30-$50 more and you have a better upgrade path. There are other sellers out there that want to overcharge for what they have, and there are definitely people who don't know about PCs that buy them, but I refuse to go down that road.
Where i live you can buy an OEM machine for around ~70 euros (~80$ USD) that usually comes with a 4GB of RAM and i5 2400 or i5 2500 or i5 3470 and similar CPUs and stick a 1050ti that goes for around 70-80 euros at most, while Ryzen prebuilt stuff that can match it costs around 300 euros, something like Ryzen 3 1200 + RX570 + 8GB of RAM, some random low end case with a time bomb PSU and entry level motherboard such as Biostar A320 model.
Hey Brian, Totally agree with you. Some of the price gouges I've seen in perth on gamtree are: - x58 mobo for 350 AUD - GTX 1070ti for 550 AUD - GTX 960 for 180aud

I'm sure you've also heard of TechFast too, I have no idea how they are making any money but their pre-builts make it almost impossible to make any money on the used market for any kind of gaming PC over $500.
Same story here in Melbourne unfortunately. Overpriced and price/performance just isn't there in local used parts market at the moment especially with the new Ryzen 3rd gen release and 2nd gen still around at a great price. Great insight
Hi Brian, I watch your videos from the other side of the world (Germany) and I really like the way you do it. Best wishes! The used market here is very fluctuating. You can get great deals but you have to digg deep especially in bigger metropolitan areas like here in Munich. OEMs Is always the best choice, but sometimes with problems because of proprietary connectors an power supply’s.
Same here in germany. Everything is advertised as a gaming pc, even core 2 duos with a gtx 260 or oem systems without graviscards. „I played LoL with it“...
Thanks to the CPU Wars between Intel and AMD, the Xeon I wanted to upgrade to finally dropped to $300. It had been over $800 the past 18 months. It was because of you that I upgraded my old AMD 6-core system (in 2016) to a 12-core/24-thread Xeon. The $300 Xeon I am looking to buy is a 20-core/40-thread CPU.
This is a great video, and definitely something affecting anyone flipping gaming pc's. Ryzen has definitely changed the game. I have been making more buying new parts and tacking on a build tax. I see i7 4770k's still selling for 200USD and 4790k's selling for 250USD 😂. So until the used market stabilizes you're honestly better off finding sales in new parts (First and second gen Ryzen so cheap). Again great video.
Quick answer: yes And i dont even need to watch the video, some idiots will ask for 99% of a new card for a used card with no warranty or anything. They are crazy. Without warranty i wouldnt pay more than half the price.
Very similar stuff going on here. Also, what is going on with used gtx 1050's and 1050ti's? They are listed for more than 2016 retail prices on ebay and ali.
The same exact thing is going on in the Dallas Texas area. Usually I can’t buy enough good priced hardware but right now lots of people are over charging for everything and the offers I get on my fair priced stuff suck! I’m holding out to see my systems make a profit, just no fun with the slow market right now.
I see it as a lot of people have just recently upgraded due to pre holiday sales and are now flooding the market with their older parts. Since they just upgraded they want to get as much as possible. It’s the same here in the US mate and you have the right advice for people. Wait. Just wait til cyber Monday sales and also next month and then also right after Christmas.
And he is possessed again. Those high price demons have gotten to him again. BEGONE HEATHENS! Where's Greg Salazar? We need his super power of detecting scammy classified ads! And I'm first. Yes.
I'm waiting for the Coolermaster Stacker 831/830 build. That case is massive but so easy to build in. Don't forget the motherboard tray slides out the back. Just need to undo the catches.
I was watching some of your build videos and felt inspired to pick up some new parts on the cheap. Copped an Rx480 nitro+ for $50USD shipped to my door and found an i7 4790k with motherboard for $100. Hustling!
I so agree. I never low-ball and just watch item and wait until selling price matches your buying price. I have a 15% rule. Don't ever offer less than 15% of asking.
Short answer: Yes Long answer: It depends who is selling it I see x79 motherboard for $150+, I see x99 motherboards for as high as $550 (usually around $200) So yeah. Buy new.
In nyc my meta is to buy a cpu/mb combo locally from microcenter, ram from newegg and used gpu from ebay. I’ve pieced together a few nice gaming pcs this way.
You're dead right, same situation here in the UK. Just looking at SSD's, you often see these advertised used for more than their brand new with guarantee price. It's great to see those new Ryzens shaking up the buying new market but I suppose some used sellers are just not aware of what value you can now get buying brand new.
It's a complete lack of understanding of the market. We purchase used parts because we CAN'T purchase new components. it will come down as soon as their merchandise gets an inch of dust from just sitting on the shelf. It simply is not sustainable. Great video keep up the good work. 👍🙂
What do you at Tech Yes City recommend when mixing "new" and "used" parts. Do you ever do that? Maybe you have some suggestions when it's a good idea or not?
Ofc that's great when you snatch a mobo, cpu, ddr3 and possibly gpu combo for a good orice, then buy new case, psu and ssd - new owner gets reliability, no dust and secure new disk, so the rig should last for some years to come.
@@mtcoiner7994 That's similar to what I'm doing. Used board and graphic cards but most of the other parts new. I love taking the old parts and building something that gives good price performance value.
Watch for dell optiplex 7010 both SFF and mid tower sporting the 3rd gen i7 3770. Tower size doesn't matter if your putting the build in a new case. Be aware that there is only 1 4 pin fan connector so you will need to get fan to power supply adapter to add more fans. The power button plus is also multi pinned so a new cases 2 pin power button likely wont work. Get adapter or just use Optiplex button some how.
The issue with processors is they just haven't moved forward a whole lot in this decade. In the 90s and 00s your processor might've been fairly useless after two or three years if you had back luck with your purchase timing or architecture/brand choice, that's how quickly technology advanced at the time, but in this decade for example plenty of people (me being one of them) have bought a powerful Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge processor in 2011 or 2012 and have only moved on very recently or are even still using it seven or eight years later. The used prices are merely a mirror of how a lot of used processors a couple of years old can still keep up with new ones relatively well for all but the most demanding tasks. Even manufacturers themselves are straight up rebadging parts, the brand new 10980XE is almost no different to the two years old 7980XE. Also we are now at a point where DDR4 memory is well established, but it's still the current standard, so anything with DDR4 support is automatically seen as "up to date". Prices for DDR4 system components will probably drop more significantly when DDR5 is introduced, similarly to how DDR3 system components are fairly cheap now (although once again the benefits of every subsequent DDR generation seem more and more diminishing as the timing increases with the clocks). Graphics cards though are still seeing their fair share of improvements and therefore depreciation. I'm spotting stuff like the GTX 970 for a quarter of its launch price (330€ -> 80€) and the GTX 580 for a sixteenth of its launch price (480€ -> 30€) these days. Due to collector's value you're starting to now pay more for an 8800 GTX than for a GTX 580.
I feel ya here in the US. Our used parts have stayed high. New PC component prices have dropped so much. Just look at RAM! And used prices have not come down to match
Don't sleep on the Optiplex. You can get them for $50 with the i3. Swap out for an i7-2600 or an e3-1230/1240, add some ram, EVGA psu from B-stock, RX 570. You're about USD$190 into it, and you can sell them like clockwork for $250-300.
I can relate with the overpriced parts I posted on Facebook asking for 3 cards that I've seen for the prices that I'm asking numerous times earlier in the year and last year and I got torn to shreds being told I'm dreaming but I knew I wasn't.
$70 for a gtx770 was the best I could do here in Adelaide a couple of weeks ago when my 1060 crapped itself. My 8 year old 3770 build isn't really worthy of spending much more to revive it.
I'm down in regional Victoria and the used market is fairly stagnant. My only saving grace is I've been getting ex-government monitors that aren't even 4 years old for $10 a piece. Been able to bundle multiple monitors with some rigs just to stay ahead of the market.
yeah. just window shopping (in the US) for a 6 or 8 core v4 Xeon for my brother's PC to let him use 2400MHz memory instead of 2133 in his budget dell box. the downside is the v4 Xeons are going for way more than a zen2 CPU plus motherboard would cost, and the zen2 combo would be way faster than a v4 Xeon in games. he spotted a 4 core Xeon on eBay, yet it would cost the same as a 3600x plus a hundred dollar AM4 motherboard, just not worth it for a 3.7GHz 4 core Xeon. esp when games are starting to want more than 4 cores today.
Used market has been dead here in the Phoenix area in AZ. Not many PCs and basically no parts that are a reasonable price. I stopped building PCs since the dry spell hit. It's the first time I've been able to walk around my office without tripping over computer parts in a while lol.
Milwaukee WI and the used market can be okay! Got an i7 4790, 2TB harddrive, for $150 a year ago. Madison WI is unreal either crazy low prices or way over priced its nuts.
In Sydney, prices are always high, prices like you are seeing up in Qld. I have bloke I can get Lenovo m91p’s from with the i5 2500 4g ram and 500gb hdd complete system for $40 but that is a rare deal
for this reason i store boards at least i always have 50 computers in stock, so i wont go dry. here in portugal minimum wagers earn like 560 euros roughly 650 usd so to buy a decent 1200€ pc the got to give 2 full month of work so im geting parts from uk and asia and do have a big market for those here!
I had a fm2+ mb and a ahtlon 880k from a build i made a year or two ago. i just recently bought a fx-6350 and gigabyte am3+ mb, i already had a gtx 1050 ti ssc and a 400w psu. really glad i made the upgrade. the fx3650 was $65 and the gigabyte mb was $46, not too shabby. this is USD btw.
I've seen a lot of components actually cost MORE used compared to new, or such minimal price difference that it makes no sense to buy used unless you can find a decent combo deal. Could just be my area, but it's been like this for quite a while. Used GPU's however seem to be pretty good, it's mostly just CPU's, RAM, and motherboards. Not only that but shipping prices are just ridiculous, upwards of $20 or more, I've seen some go to almost $40.
Yep. Same thing happened over here in the U.S.A. to me. Except this was happing to me beginning in April this year. Then by July, the used market made no profit for anybody. Luckily for me, I opted out by June out of the used tech market. Plus, tech used market was a hobby and not really my main income. I never made a lot of money except like $20 to $50 extra. It just was a fun past time. I just feel sorry for you and other used tech hustlers cause who most likely rely on this way more than I do. Hopefully the used market will balance itself out eventually for y'all.
I can thankfully say here in the UK there are stil some good deals about and im doing pretty well flipping custom refurbed gaming PCs (sold about 250 this year) I have found the used price market is seasonal and xmas is a time where people try to rip people off. Im waiting till after christmas where people want to seel their old PCs after they get a new one for christmas
Her in the US see a lot of overpriced GPUs on e- bay with a few good, but not great deals. Local market is pretty slim where I live. Got a used rx 480 8gb on E-bay for $109 shipped a few months back and thought that was decent.
Here in Utah the used parts prices still seem to be pretty stable and the used pc market has remained mostly the same. Here it seems each of the sellers have their own little niche cut out for them selves. For example I tend to build higher end pcs while another guy sells mid range and then theres a couple who sell entry level pcs. Ryzen has definitely been affecting our market, but not to the point where I'm losing money on the pcs I'm selling. I'm still able to sell a system with an i7 7700k and a 1080ti for well over $1,500. There is definitely a shift going on, as it's taking longer for pcs to sell. I'm sure come mid december and then next tax season things will pick up.
Where i live all is expensive, its crazy to see stores selling 2017s low specs ssds same price as you can find this year released ones. The same happens with graphic cards, where i live they cost the double as in USA. As you said its allways good to keep eyes oppened for good deals.
What I learned before is that you're able to buy normally priced sh stuff in October, then do tech yes lovin and testing in November, then sell them rigs in December.
I live in the United States. The same thing is happening here. About 9/10 of the people selling used computer stuff are asking way way way too much for it. Like I could buy you new for the same price or maybe even cheaper
FYI, it's the same here in the USA bloke. Every once in a while lately I find a deal and JUMP on it. It's not that often though. I will say that I think part of the reason for used parts holding their value now a days is that the new parts are getting more and more expensive. Plus the performance for me isn't worth the price of entry. What do you think Bryan?
ricky v New GPUs, RAM & CPUs have never been cheaper then they are at the moment. With Ryzen shaking things up Intel have followed suit price wise to compete.
Charlie I see your point. Thinking about this logically, Ryzen 5/7 and Intel i5/7 chips are reasonable and offer great value. I was looking at i9 and Ryzen 9/Threadripper. Oops on me. (:
Tech YES City Here in Southern California, I don’t see as much inventory. Thus people are willing to hold off on negotiating. It’s all good though. I got an 8GB RX480 for 80 bucks yesterday. Works great in the Mac Pro. (: Hey, what do you think about 75-85 USD for 32GB of DDR3?
Wonder what your take is on Black friday "Sales" I wanted to get a 1tb m.2 from a popular computer site here in uk/ireland and i saw the Sale price....and i thought hangon it was that price before the sale ....few weeks before
Some guy on OfferUp told me the other day that my $100 offer for his used rx580 8gb was a lowball. I see 1060s going for $200 again in my area when they were anywhere from 80-120 a couple months ago. Luckily I got a 1070ti for $200 a couple months ago. Ebay I’ve noticed doesn’t fluctuate as much as local prices, just have to dig for what you’re looking for.
This really weird situation is normal where I live. Getting 'Deals' here is purely luck and comes once in a blue moon, if at all. People use a GPU for 3 years, post a dusty picture of it, claim it as "Full Fresh" and ask for ridiculous prices.
trying to find a 486 motherboard for a good price but they are so expensive, i just have Pentium 1 and Pentium 2 hardware. and some 486 CPUs, cards, etc.
@@pentiummmx2294 Yah, it is hard to find the much older hardware at a good price. I mostly buy and resell higher end 478 and 775 boards. I think 478 does well because it has some of the last chipsets supported by windows 98 and 775 for windows xp. I also resell a lot of later model AGP graphics cards. I think it is cool to have a rampage socket 775 board, but I think I'd rather sell it for $170 and use that to deal hunt some newer parts. Build with the new parts and then finally cash out by selling that build. I guess I'm saying part with the stuff you don't want. Buy what you do want.
Yeah mate same kinda situation in The UK......4gb and 8gb gpu`s have gone down in price new and used is having to follow in the wake of that ..... You are right about patients though.......It does pay off . I find that having a price limit on what you are prepared to pay helps allot ........ I am on fifty British pounds at the moment ......So nothing gets bought unless it is fifty quid.......Top stuff mate smell ya soon........Byeeeeeee
In Portugal the second hand market always sucked, now... It just sucks worst. The few "good deals" I can find would be good 6 months ago, now they're just not really worth it compared to the new prices we have, especially on CPUs. But what can you do, the i7 name still carries a premium no matter how old the CPU is.
Not sure if just me, but after 1903 update or after a certain windows update. My Wifi speeds have gone down tremendously from 60 plus average. Down to 20 and under....
Similar situation here in Japan. Some people just don't understand what's going on the market (for new parts) recently... or just plain ignorant. And btw, even ali vendors are a little bit crazy. The mid-low and low cpu prices are still fine, but midrange gaming and especially old workstation cpu prices must be dropped. AMD changed the market too much, in a too short period of time. And people are sour because they have to drop prices big time. But this will change. Meanwhile, as you said, we just have to be patient.
brain i am noticing this happening around where i live as well, so many people at all price ranges for the same systems, its ridiculious , im only ever asking 75$ profit for a build , new or used , and im having a hard time earning that margin, even whilst hunting down the best prices.
The used market is pretty bad right and I think Ryzen is a big reason for it. At least Black Week/Friday brings out some pretty nice deals on new hardware. Found a new RX 590 8GB for 169,90€ for example.
No one into picking through closing down architect/3D modeler offices? I got lucky sometimes with closing down architectural offices since they tend to use better PCs than most industries.
I sold a gutted Alienware X52 system with an i7 4790, 16GB @ 2400, SSD, Noctua cooler for $400 USD it sold so fast. I was finding the older i7's being way overpriced. Bought the system not working properly, which turned out to be no thermal paste on the stock Intel cooler and the poor alienware thermals. Once I took it out and got rid of the busted AMD R9 290 it worked fine. I had over 15 offers in a few days low was $300 ended up getting the $400 asking.
The 'new' prices on 2nd gen ryzen are just so good (at least here in the UK) that it makes a mockery of the asking prices I see on almost any used PC. Right now, I could order delivered to my door tomorrow a new B450 Tomahawk, a Ryzen 7 2700 with a cooler and 16gb of ddr4 3200 (rgb!) for £290 straight of Amazon with the RAM being a black Friday special. It's taking a lot of willpower and the knowledge of the inevitable earful I'd get from the missus not to do this. And yet I just checked eBay and people are still crazy enough to pay £200 for a used 4790k / mb / 16gb ddr3 combo. Let alone the typical asking price of such a system on Facebook marketplace place where they've slapped in a 970 and want £500+ for it! At some point the penny will drop that second hand quad cores are worth 1/2 what people are asking given the new prices. Should have flogged my 2700k a few months ago!!
Graphics card market is bonkers in the states also. Been trying to find a used RX 460/550 low profile card for cheap. They are all priced over the cost of a new 1050 ti or 1650 LP. So silly.
I just picked up a new Ryzen 7 2700X for $130 at Micro Center. Used parts are not worth it with deals like that. Everyone in my area is trying to get close to retail for their used stuff.
but dont get crazy, ive got a big ware house with more than 400 motherboards 300 cpus gpus lost count and hd/ssd not even bother to check it, if you need some im here to do business
Hey Brian, what for a resell price would you ask for a used system: i5 6500, 8gb ram, itx h110 , rx 570, corsair sf450 psu and a lian li tu200 case? Is 320$ (US) too much?
It's a very weird used desktop market. When we have 8 core 8 thread CPUs well below 300$ US. I have come to terms that my old 3770 oem pc can not fetch me more than 250$ us my old core 2 quad probably can get 50$ US. It is what it is. There is new ryzen 2700 that can be got for less than 200$ .
the ryzen cpus really destroyed alot of used market stuff hahah
Also the amd gpus
I hope they crush the new market too, I hope they can force nvidia to sell their top tier cards cheaper.
You are absolutely right.
No point in buying a 5 year old board and CPU when you can get something new with similar performance for the same or less and simply have a better experience.
I have no PC nor Money but why do I relate so much
They are overpriced. Just stupid people trying to take advantage of the unknowledgeable.
like every single business out there obviously
Where i live who overprice don't sell, in the second hand market people only wants to pay very few momey doesn't matter how new or expensive something is, i sold things in perfect condition for dirty cheap because they were just getting dust on the self.
I picked up an 8gb red devil 580 just an hour ago for $100, I'm pretty happy with that though
@kaizer5lock I was going to offer $80 but he claimed beforehand that someone else would get it later that day if I didn't so I didn't even try and just went straight there lol. I'm a sucker for it's design
Everybody has the internet to research price. Its not taking advantage.
Brian if you click the middle mouse wheel when hovering over a link it will open in a new tab.. you dont have to right click and then click open in new tab.. I just doubled your used parts hunting performance by 50% :)
never knew this, thank you!

I'm having similar issues in Atlanta

Totally agree with you.
Some of the price gouges I've seen in perth on gamtree are:
- x58 mobo for 350 AUD
- GTX 1070ti for 550 AUD
- GTX 960 for 180aud
Definitely seeing an uptick in new sellers.

Here in Europe, the situation is pretty much the same, especially for CPU's / platforms, while the prices of used GPU's are still pretty OK

Can't wait to see what you make out of the November used parts hunt.
Oh man, you should come to Portugal. 95% of the used market is like that. It's so hard to find deals here 😭

Out with the old and boring Tech City.

I'm waiting for the Coolermaster Stacker 831/830 build. That case is massive but so easy to build in. Don't forget the motherboard tray slides out the back. Just need to undo the catches.
Love that intro! More these comedy pieces.
I love these new intros xDDD
I was watching some of your build videos and felt inspired to pick up some new parts on the cheap. Copped an Rx480 nitro+ for $50USD shipped to my door and found an i7 4790k with motherboard for $100. Hustling!
I so agree. I never low-ball and just watch item and wait until selling price matches your buying price.
I have a 15% rule. Don't ever offer less than 15% of asking.
Come to Ireland... Here used parts cost more than new...
That's why I moved out mate haha
Yes. In Irelan Pentium 4 is expensive :P
Shit.
Short answer: Yes
Long answer: It depends who is selling it
I see x79 motherboard for $150+, I see x99 motherboards for as high as $550 (usually around $200)
So yeah.
Haha this intro! 😂👌🏼 your acting skills mate are on peak
“Selling my gtx 760 $200, nothing wrong with it just want to upgrade”
and gtx760 number is higher than the rx570 so it's faster right? :D
I've seen someone near me selling an RX 560 for 300 CAD...
For real, good god man grow Upp
That introduction was amazing. Maybe a tech yes movie? If you made multiple movies people could have a techathon!
Love the skit in the beginning lol. Keep doing them pls
What do you at Tech Yes City recommend when mixing "new" and "used" parts. Do you ever do that? Maybe you have some suggestions when it's a good idea or not?
I do that. OEM pc, strip the board, cpu and ram into a new case, new power supply, new graphics card and ssd.
@@mtcoiner7994 Thanks I'll keep an eye out for that.
I7 4770 was sold extensively by dell especially in the 9020 optiplex line. Full systems are a great buy under 250 aud.
Also. Melbourne's market is messed up too. Hoping Xmas rush sorts it out
I feel ya here in the US.
I also live in SEQLD and see the exact same listings as you do, it sucks right now 😥
yeah. just window shopping (in the US) for a 6 or 8 core v4 Xeon for my brother's PC to let him use 2400MHz memory instead of 2133 in his budget dell box. the downside is the v4 Xeons are going for way more than a zen2 CPU plus motherboard would cost, and the zen2 combo would be way faster than a v4 Xeon in games. he spotted a 4 core Xeon on eBay, yet it would cost the same as a 3600x plus a hundred dollar AM4 motherboard, just not worth it for a 3.7GHz 4 core Xeon. esp when games are starting to want more than 4 cores today.
I like how Bryan puts out new video nearly every day but other BIG TH-camRS cannot....
Well here in southern California, people are selling gtx1070 1080 overpriced. If I add $50 more I can get a Rtx 2060 super which is better than 1080.
What do you think Bryan?
ricky v
New GPUs, RAM & CPUs have never been cheaper then they are at the moment.
With Ryzen shaking things up Intel have followed suit price wise to compete.
Oh there is a used gaming pc craze around here at moment, everyone flipping gaming pcs, ads get buried on gumtree within a day lol.
Hey, what do you think about 75-85 USD for 32GB of DDR3?
Like the new merch, and the intro! Where can I buy merch ?
140-200 for the 1060s
This really weird situation is normal where I live. Getting 'Deals' here is purely luck and comes once in a blue moon, if at all. People use a GPU for 3 years, post a dusty picture of it, claim it as "Full Fresh" and ask for ridiculous prices.
Feeling the slump here too. Been focusing more on retro parts. They ebay pretty well. Socket 478 has been pretty hot.
trying to find a 486 motherboard for a good price but they are so expensive, i just have Pentium 1 and Pentium 2 hardware. and some 486 CPUs, cards, etc.
Bryan, do you think buying OEM X79 boards is a good idea? I saw an HP X79 motherboard go for $50 USD.

I just got a H61 board with an i3 3220 for £20 on ebay. A nice upgrade for me from my old core 2 duo laptop.

No one into picking through closing down architect/3D modeler offices? I got lucky sometimes with closing down architectural offices since they tend to use better PCs than most industries.

People ask for silly money on eBay in the UK but you get better deals from CEX or Auction
I always low ball on the online marketplaces, especially if people are asking way too much, sometimes they accept.
Is i5 2500 ok cpu ? Would it be decent 1080p gaming system conbined with 570 or smth ???
So silly.

When I can buy Ryzen 1st/2nd Gen. 6C/12T for cheap, why buy Intel used?
Used Zen(+) are really cheap now.
