Hi MJ really nice pond, it looks quite natural :) I saw some tips on other videos that I would like to share (people has already share some) : - it might be good the drill a hole on the side below the edge of the bucket and place a mesh behind it to avoid overflow if it's rainning a lot - place a branch coming out of the pond if for example a mouse wants to drink from the pond and falls inside of it then it can get out by using the branch Cheers.
Nice what a transformation you made with your outside( balcony). I bet you have a million guppy’s now , as mentioned by someone else you have to make an overflow, a small hole on the back with a little piece of hose which waters the grass plant outside the pond so you can top of the pond with some fresh water now and than and the overflow waters the grass behind .
It's time to start setting up ponds and I am looking forward to finally setting up my first. This came out great. I could listen to you talk about fishkeeping all day, you have such a relaxing demeanor. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do this season.
Hi MJ, nice project. Normally myriophyllum must be 10~30cm below the water surface. They are oxygenating plants, and they can survive winter. Mine were stuck into 3cm thick ice layer without problem. For the water lily, that tiny pot is too small. The rhizome will explode it. And the pellets provided are clay. You have to mix it with soil. Cheers.
Can't help thinking of that Russian handsome guy in stranger things!🥰I just made a pond scape myself and this is just what need to improve mine. thanks so much!
A tip for future ponds: You do not use any nutrients in ponds, at all. That includes no aquasoils, and the plants you buy must be rinsed with water so that the soil separates from the roots.
What a sweet little setup. Maybe look at getting a little solar pump so you can have the sound of trickling water too Solar Fairy lights threaded through the fence and you’ll have a great space for cocktail hour or morning coffee 🥰🐠🍹☕️
I’ve had a Pygmy lily in a pot pond for around five years and it’s doing great, flowering every year. You will need to lower the plant in the water as the stems grow, eventually planting it in the substrate. The lily pads need to be at the surface and the flowers will poke just above. It will look great once it’s grown in.
Just love this video! I thought I was going to make a pond this year, but I still have other landscaping priorities. This makes me want a pond so badly! Thanks for sharing your build process.
What a great space now to come out & relax with a few cocktails. Love the whole effect you did hiding that pipe and that tall grass behind by the large branch was the perfect touch!! Happy Summertime!! Have a great weekend!
Hi MJ really nice pond, it looks natural, I just ask one question, please tell me how to check nitrate and ammonia levels to save from damaged plants and shrimps, and how to add beneficial bacteria, your support/tips are very helpful for me, thanks
Great video. You could have done away with the aquasoil, gravel and floss by just using pre-soaked LECA (light expanded clay aggregate) . All my houseplants I have put in my aquariums (e.g. peace lilies, pothos, anthurium) are in hydroponic pots which are smaller versions of the large tub you are using. The plant roots will then grow through the basket and get their nutrients from the water column. Layering the top with insect screening would allow you to top it all with moss glued to the screen maybe?
So I went out yesterday and actually bought the exact same pot you have. This was completely random as this video popped up on my feed this morning.. pond is setup now and cycling.. I decided to use a small filter for flow and used 50% of water from a established tank.. hope it all works out.
Turned out great Mark !!! This is what I love about your channel , your attention to details has always been a huge reason IMO for how successful you are & what keeps your channel in a very small community of the best on You Tube . I look forward to see how your pond will do & I have no doubts by the end of your time here there will be a nice collection of some very inspiring living bodies of water 💙💚🌍
@@MJAquascaping Hey Mark , I also think ? I want to mention ? I swear I will never just know my native language as good as Norwegian where my Parents are from 🤔 The other day Pond Guru was showing a really good solar powered pump that might just be the ultimate w/ your new pond . Take care ☯️

Hello MJ, I Just fell in love with freshwater fishtanks and bought a 125 gallon. I’ve been really enjoying your serene aquascaping videos. I want to try to propagate a miss carpet using your hand blender and painting method. I would be incredibly grateful if you could give me your opinion on how much actual moss I will need for such a large space? The tank is 6 feet by 18”, and I am planning on hardscaping with a large driftwood “tree stump”, a driftwood arch, and dragon stone formations. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! You are incredible.
hee mark, mooie pond kerel! ik heb hier mijn black bar endlers ook in zoiets zitten, mijn enige vraag is wanneer ga je ze eruit vangen, hoe en zoniet denk je dat ze de winter overleven? grtz
I'm wondering how they have such selection! Where I live, aquatic plants and animals are considered invasive, so it is always a struggle to get some. I think we are allowed only those that are clean cell propagated, no snails of any kind!
This is highly inspirational. What will you do in the winter though? This is kinda the only thing that stopped me from setting up such a little project.
Great. I tried to set my tub ponds up on the cheap and was constantly frustrated by the plants needed to be closer to the surface. They kept falling over. In the end I got some floating plant holders. Definitely not as aesthetically pleasing as your tub.
Perfect timing cause I also wanna make a pond using this type of plastic but bigger than this, I confused what sandnor soil I should use cause aquasoil so expensive that if I put too that pond I gone eating grass for 2 month 🤣🤣, any suggestion?
I used same bamboo on my channel lol it's is super to cover up ugly old fences nice job with that and giving me the inspiration to make my own small pond better looking. I subbed ofcourse
I have been debating this for years also and just keep not finding time 😅, looks great i would love to see you do a black water nano as they are growing on me.
Do you feed your guppies or do they eat the plants. Do you have to put a heater in the tub or are they resilient to all type of weather changes. How often are you expected to clean this tub
Heel erg mooi!!! Ik heb zelf de mud bucket gemaakt die Dean van aquarium co op heeft laten zien..Dit ziet er mooi uit en gelijk geinspireerd om een tweede te maken meer in deze stijl!
nice idea, I have a plenty stock of sad echinodorus. I need to make a pond for them . currently my guppy pond is loaded with lots of frogbit. so far the guppies are surviving cold night and hot afternoon 😁 they're sooo hardy for such little fishes 😃😃
Anyone have advice for adding plants like that AFTER you already have fish inside? I started a container pond similar to this one and want to add the bog plants but I have five guppies already and I’m so nervous of the transferring in and out
I've considered making something similar on my balcony (hang-on type), but don't dare because of weight. It's probably in my head, even with all the herbs and tomato plants it shouldn't get close to 100 kg/m^2 (the norm). Second issue is the heat during summer, which might be actual blocker if I decide to go for it. Often aquarium fish thrive in summer ponds. If I had a garden, I'd dig a pond to keep swordtails in there for 4 - 6 months every year, even if that meant another aquarium during winter time. They are said to grow big in ponds and their colours... White Cloud Mountain Minnows or Paradise Fish could be even better option for outside pond as they come from colder areas.
mj nice project ;) , i found in my garden center a view nice container. A "pond-like setup can created with this, intressting to see the development of your new setup
The guppies will take care of any mosquito larvae, it’ll be fine. My family always keep guppies in our marsh setup outside and for our plant farm and they take care of any insect larvae.
I like all your videos, nice production, btw. But in case of the pond I may have some suggestions. I used to do such things, I absolutelly love mosaic plant floating, but ... what I don't like it is smell. After some number of days water will smell... and algae... ugh! And yes, 3 dead animals floating, good I notice early enough... Long story short, without some surface protection, proper aquasoil depth and forced filtration I will not do it anymore. But video was nice! All those changes you made on you balcony are nice! Please, show as development after few weeks. Is outside temperature hot?

I would suggest a small overflow hole for when it rains on the side at the top and glue a small piece of screen over it so you won't lose the fish.
