    According to many low-tech fish tank and riparian builds, a key feature of preventing algae growth and natural water filtration was using terrestrial plants and marginal plants without soil and only substrate (such as the akadama or expanded clay). This forces the plants to develop water roots in which they pull their nutrient needs directly from the water column. The lack of excess nutrients in the water column discourages algae overgrowth and keeps the water very clear. While water & floating plants help with this too, they are best at adding oxygen to the water. While terrestrial plants grown hydroponically are better at filtering the water and keeping algae at bay. Hope this helps someone ❤

    Fill bucket with water. Let it sit out side in shade for two days. Chlorine will evaporate into the air out of the water. Better for fish. Lovely garden. Good info on pond soil.

      Thank you for your advice 💕 yes I normally do the same method to dechrolinate tap water. In my area, tap water contains chloramine as well which doesn't evaporate easily, so I try to keep my bucket of water in a sunny area for a longer period 😊

      If you can get barrel and collect rain water for your pond even better. Puts some buckets out when it rains or catch some from down pipe from roof but roof must be clean not dusty mouldy or dirty. Same with down pipe. Rice fish pretty and white.

    For algae overgrowth..especially string algae...if you make a small bunch ( tie with string ) of BARLEY STRAW ( buy in nurseries or produce shops etc... where you buy hay .... ) it works really well to kill or restrict the algaes. I always used it in my ponds. Beautiful video thank you .

    I Simply was so taken by your beautiful natural approach & your gentle patient Japanese culture which comes through.
    Love that natural Ponds in Japan fish are not fed but rely on natural ecosystems based from (1700's in Japan).
    We loved Japan so very much ❤️ 2014 holiday. I sumply couldnot take enough photos. I had wanted to visit Japan since I was a very little girl. I loved it all so very much from Osaka to Kyoto Tokyo, Nagano, & Yaminuchi to see the beautiful snow Monkeys & I felt like I was walking & meditating at the same time.
    Love the Bamboo forest.
    Have always wanted to put together a Japanese style water garden with fish to keep my memories alive.

    It seems to me that outdoor ponds cycle faster.
    I suggest adding a pot with plants from another pond into new pond to jump start the cycle, since a lot of the good microbes live in the pot that was sitting in an older pond.
    I also suggest giving away some of your medaka and adding some unrelated fish into your pond. It will help you produce more healthy fish in the future, since it will help increase the gene pool.

    • @livelovelaughdiy
      @livelovelaughdiy  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for your great suggestions. I always appreciate sharing knowledge and ideas! I have let some of the fish go away from the pond but haven’t put new ones in yet. I am hoping that the medaka community is growing in my area so that people can trade the fish easily. Transferring a pot from other pond is a great idea. Thank you for letting me know 😊

      @@livelovelaughdiy hi LLL DIY, the medaka rice fish are becoming more popular as of recently, at least in the US. I’m sure in your country it’s growing in popularity too, since the niche for a perfect small, hardy, and colorful pond fish is something that is hard to find.

    Magical! Without any techie bits of equipment you produce an aquatic oasis. There is something delightfully childlike in the way you combine all the techniques into something that is truly awe inspiring. The management of the water for the daphna is so well explained I live in the UK so I doubt if my ponds would overwinter, but I'm inspired to give it a try in an adapted format. Thank you :-)

    • @livelovelaughdiy
      @livelovelaughdiy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your beautiful comment from UK! This pond works in Japan where it’s quite cold in Japan and rice fish can survive under the ice. But if the entire water gets frozen, they die. Some people use a styrofoam bowl during winter because it gives better insulation. I don’t know how cold it gets in your area, but sending you the best wishes…💕

    I love the look if your finished garden. You worked so hard & then results are beautiful. Thank you for the rice fish video. I love on them Texas prairie (tornado alley). Unfortunately I can't do a full scale Japanese garden in my conditions but I can incorporate some elements here. Thank you for inspiration.

      @@livelovelaughdiy it’s amazing how much Patience you have and caring for your Fish. I’m still working on my Pond. Building a walkway with a bridge over the pond so my 3 Grand kids can walk over and look at the fish. I have a 6 foot tall fence all around. But I have a problem with Stray Cats getting into my yard and eating my fish. I really want to buy Koi Fish. But need to figure out a way to stop the Cats. Hi 👋 from South Texas

      Wow I would love to see your pond when it’s done! Sounds amazing!! Yes, sometimes cats are problem. My parents had a small patio pond with some koi fish but cats got them. Since then they covered the pond with wire mesh. It doesn’t look good but it protects the pond.

    • @ram1362
      @ram1362 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@livelovelaughdiy sure 👍 I ll send you a Ticket to Fly over 😉 but I wonder if I decide to put a Wire Mesh under the bridge on both sides, will the fish move there when cats show up? 🤔 hi from South Texas USA

    • @livelovelaughdiy
      @livelovelaughdiy  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Your pond may be ok without the protection, because it sounds big enough that cats are not able to catch your fish. They don't want to fall in the water for sure! My parents' patio pond was small, so cats can easily touch the fish. Wishing you the best on your pond project!

    I bought a ginormous half whiskey barrel from amazon, lined it with pondliner and keep it on the patio decking under a big awning and added 4 orandas. Pond going on 5 years now, fish were from my indoor tank and are 7+ years old. Very easy upkeep, but will need heavy duty pond filter, charcoal, clay, those plastic beads, uv etc, orandas are messy eaters and poop a lot (weekly half water change ofc).

      I see, your area is cooler than mine. If you are getting Japanese rice fish, I recommend to set up the pond in early spring. Although they can survive in winter but they are mostly hibernating during the very cold time, that means you can only see them sitting at the bottom of the pond, not eating either, it’s not so fun to see.
