This is from a VH live show from 1975 at the Pasadena Hilton. Those cutting on it are clueless. This is the beginning of one the greatest bands that ever existed. Get over yourself and start enjoying life and realize this is GOLD!🤘✊✌
I could always tell the difference between the two. Trower had a lot of Hendrix in his playing and in his tone but he had his own licks and his own phrasing. I wouldn't mistake Jimi for Trower or vice versa@@JustKJ109
Most definitely a phase 90, you can make a phaser do a pretty good impression of a univibe, EVH apparently learned this through Terry Kilgore who was using a phase 90 to cover Robin trower songs much like this one.
This is an awesome cover of the great Robin Trower's "The Fool and Me". Van Halen killing it, staying true to the original but making it their own. BTW, it does sound like Dave is singing "the Fool In Me" which is appropriate for Dave.
robert Jr. love Dave, I think he was always the best singer for VH, he is not a blues rock singer at all, this is a terrible cover....it's too bad Eddie doesn't play like this all the time
Never heard this and I'm a huge VH and Trower fan. Can't imagine Robin not loving this rendition! Eddie of course nails the guitar sound, while adding his own signiture stuff, as well as Mike and Alex ,making this great, but the biggest suprise to me is DLR's vocals on this!
Totally! I heard Rob Trower perform it and each time I think Eddie stole the sound effects Robin created. Quite a lotta technology use! Thank you so much for this!!! It's so cool they played so many perfect covers-influence on the sleeve, inventiveness.
Where I live in Western Washington a month after I turned 21 I bought tickets to see Robin Trower at a place called the Ballard Fire house I took my dad who told me stories about seeing Robin Trower on tour with Jethro Tull in the early 70’s. And WOW! I was beyond amazed that I got to see such a great legendary guitarist in a Bar of all places.
I never understood how Van Halen could say he didn't like Hendrix "because he used a lot effects and I couldn't afford them" every old recording I've heard of EVH he has a ton of effects Flanger and the ever present Phase90. Not an insult, just an observation.
Besides Clapton , Eddie kept alot of his influence in mysterious ways and threw people off his trail so to speak , He always downplayed a Hendrix influence by saying he couldn’t afford all the effects , which most people know Eddie used his fair share of effects even in the club days and Hendrix didn’t use that many more effects ( basically a Wah , Fuzz Face , Octave , Univibe ) … Even with Eddie’s Techniques and Gear I’m sure he had his reasons for misleading the public ? Eddie and Alex Definitely Consumed and Listened to Lots and Lots of Music and if you dig deep enough you can find them … Long Live EVH , I put him at the Top Always
I have also said for years that eddie never really talked about his true influences that he held under the radar. I guess its all subjective anyway but i hear the influences i believe he guarded and didn't want to admit to for some reason. @Buzzode
dlr had a unique sound singing vh material, e.g., those falsetto, shrilly screams and whatnot, but this is beyond horrible. james dewar put some real soul into the original
The point of this is listen to Eddie. It's very cool, DLR on it is just OK. Love it for what it is, an unearthed gem of early VH. Trower is awesome, seen him numerous times, I'm a huge fan. But I also get how cool this is...
What I love about this is it proves that Van Halen evolved into the great band they were. They were always good but they weren't great. That happened later. But it should give a real insight into the time it takes to develop a band in the something special.
It amazes me that Eddie does a pretty goid cover of a great TROWER song and all some people can post is how Eddie can sound so much like Hendrix. Idiots.
I was at that Concert at the Big A in Anaheim California! Sammy Hagar/ Van Halen / Sabbath and Boston.... on the infield for Sammy and Van Halen! Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school California USA ♥️🇺🇲
Never knew VH covered this tune. DLR vocals miss the mark. Seems flat in some spots. But overall, a really nice cover. EVH even simulates the organ on the chorus. Nice!
@rckmmmm Thanks! You must be the smartest man I've talked to all day today! Van Halen is just the greatest band ever on the planet. Van Halen kicks the left nut,Van Hagar kicks the right nut;BOTH ARE CRUSHING!! Van Cherone?a 10 for most bands, and I say an 8 for VH-don't understand Sam saying VH3 doesn't count as an album but I can't wait to hear the new stuff.I am sure some of the licks are going to ooze 80s VH. "Catherine" "Rise" and "Joy To The World" sounds 2.It won't be VH1 again though.
@GottaLoveEddie Local garage band when I was growing up going to parites...saw them perform at parks...wow that guy is so cute and have never heard anyone play like that before!!! And who is the long haired drama king??? Yep, we would never have guessed they would have made it to the top...I still love em. Fond memories of this band from Arcadia :) Get it together again guys, the world is waiting!!!!
I would have been 5 in 1976 so I was not there. Lol. I got this back around 2006. More was availabale to download. Now if you check I have a LOT of stuff that is actually even harder to find. Like the 2012 songs were longer. I have those. I have a friend of the producer Andy Shanks and the engineer Ross Hogarth. I know Neil Zlozower, the band photographer from 78 to 84 amd use his art with permission. Luck.
One of my favorite Trower songs. Excellent cover

@@jironthunder7519 Right on Jane. I hear you loud and clear✊
This sht makes you wanna fly. Life is good if you let it be.✌🤘
It's Robin Trower fans who are dumping on this trash cover I think.
@@readilium3432 I'm a huge Trower fan and I love it.
@@philocleandes9302 Neat.
Man, EVH had Trower's style down cold! Really great homage.
I agree.
I can definitely see why Eddie would want to cover this Trower classic. It's got some super tasty chops in it which Eddie tears into quite nicely.
Wow; very nice! I really dig how Eddie can play any guitar players parts, but still sound like Eddie!
great tribute to Robin! Robin,Eddie,SRV and Frank Marino,my all time favs!! thanks for this!!
mine too
Welcome to the club, I would include Gary Moore in that group.
@@43captrexkramer th-cam.com/video/qRFWmNgTqRE/w-d-xo.html
Me too brother! Right on!!
Everybody played this tune back then.
James Dewar is the ONLY one who can sing this song!
Yep.
And Paul Rodgers, of course...
Be true to your school. The Old One. Nice try VH.
Roth vocals don't give this song justice. Nobody can compare to Dewar.
@@ElverGobbi Paul Rodgers never sang this song.
The boys of Van Halen were in top form on this classic-Trower track!
Wow, this is like Eddie channeling Hendrix. Great stuff
He's channeling Trower.
@@philocleandes9302Sounds just like Hendrix.
@@philocleandes9302it does sound like Hendrix
Maybe Trowers copy Hendrix .
Exactly 👍
I could always tell the difference between the two. Trower had a lot of Hendrix in his playing and in his tone but he had his own licks and his own phrasing. I wouldn't mistake Jimi for Trower or vice versa@@JustKJ109
The thing that I’m most impressed with here, besides Eddie’s playing as usual, is that I’m hearing him play through a univibe!
I be willing to bet it’s just a setting on his phase 90. I can kinda get a univibe sound on my phase 90. What do you think ??
Most definitely a phase 90, you can make a phaser do a pretty good impression of a univibe, EVH apparently learned this through Terry Kilgore who was using a phase 90 to cover Robin trower songs much like this one.
Oh hell yeah!!! Who knew?! Rest peacefully Edward and thank you for this golden nugget.
Excellent cover. Love Trower and VH ....
This is the first and only time I ever heard EVH sound like hendrix !
RIP Eddie, your music never dies.
Wowie! This is one sensational recording!
From a big time Trower and Van Halen fan.
Nice version. Saw Robin Trower do it two years ago when he was 66 - he's 68 now and can still kick it out for a 3 hour set.
Still the same 10 years later!!
This is a Robin Trower Tune! Cool cover though.
This is an awesome cover of the great Robin Trower's "The Fool and Me". Van Halen killing it, staying true to the original but making it their own. BTW, it does sound like Dave is singing "the Fool In Me" which is appropriate for Dave.

@Kenneth Liburd When did Eddie say that he didn't like Hendrix?
Staying true but making it their own ..Umm ok
Thank you so much for posting this little gem...actually HUGE GEM!

Pretty close to the original!!! Sorry Dave you should of just sat this one out!
Definitely
Eddie should've sat out too. Sorry but thats rough... UGH!!!

Ok but missing that soulful vocal. Hard to follow James Dewar!
No kidding a great track from Bridge Of Sighs. James Dewar was a great singer, perfect for Robin Trower
Great Robin Trower song!
Rock N Fuckin Roll.
great song
Love Van Halen - but Trower did this song far and away better than this.
Let's see how Trower would handle a Van Halen tune.
@@guitarbob63 And I LOVE Trower!
Ed was a teenager here. They did HUNDREDS of covers back then. Recorded with a boombox. 😂
I think he was 20 in 1975.
Very cool. Thanks for posting this. Eddie stays pretty faithful to the original -- at least for a while. Good stuff!
Where I live in Western Washington a month after I turned 21 I bought tickets to see Robin Trower at a place called the Ballard Fire house I took my dad who told me stories about seeing Robin Trower on tour with Jethro Tull in the early 70’s. Saw Trower live right after Bridge of Sighs came out....amazing....took my daughter to see him about 5 years ago...he was still amazing......
Yes Trower in the '70's was a big deal...Saw him at Seattle's Paramount in '73...
These were the club days and so much fun!
Robin Trower, I remember it well. Nice VH version.
Within a note or two, you hear that Trower feel. All in a day's work for a young EVH playing covers in the LA bar scene.
EVH is bringing it! He sounds great in this version.
Eddie does Trower excellently! Dave though....he was never as good as Dewar. But then again, not many are.
Yeah! One of my all time favorites by Robin Trower.
Still the best live band I've ever seen. Nobody's come close...🎉🎶🎸🎛🎵🎛🎙🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶
wow Ed did a super job emulating Trower's tone/playing. EVH #1

Does van Halen have these sound boards ?? Why don't they release them?
Nice work from Eddie but I prefer the Trower Tone over the Brown Sound. Really makes me miss James Dewar.
Not bad with the instruments. Who are these kids?
@Mattlangston You got it. My channel has over 25 more unreleased, rare songs by Van Halen.
this is like the only Trower copy I can remember from VH back in the day. Kick ass!
I have this on a bootleg called "golden ballroom" and it rocks....great video montage too!
Wow 😳 I like this a Lot! Trower was my first concert! ...tbh... i was sooooooooooo _fried_ i only remember parts of the show...
wow, always been a big Robin Trower fan but also love Van Halen, this is awesome, so much great other stuff that i've never heard, fantastic
Nice REAL Nice. Like the Studio Version but this was Really Cool. Thanks Dave and Eddie .
hendrix sound... thanks Eddie, rest in peace, listen since
Jimi dewar is the best.david lee roth is the ordinary vocalist for me.from iran.r.i.p dewar.long alive for trower.
TROWER POWER 1974
EVH had Trower's tone down pat...

This is a great Tribute to R.T by EVH like other great 🎸players to cover his songs like Pat Travers & Michael Schenker. 🤘🎸
I can't believe Trower is still touring. I am going to see him this spring in Virginia.
First class shredding, but ditto the James Dewar remark. One of the great rock vocalist ever!
Fantastic guitar solo
Great upload, early V.H. doing Trower justice.....
Love this tune.
I like Van Halen but I'm a major Robin Trower/James Dewar fan, I can see why this recording is "rare".
Unbelievable I love it
DLR sounds like he's doing karaoke. EVH does a great job of course!
Still had to listen. And thanks for posting.
trower all the way
Goddamn, I never knew this VH never ceases to amaze me!
No disrespect to Eddy - but I'm sorry; Trower did it better 👍🤘

Pretty cool. EVH paying respect to RT. 💋
A BLUESY SPIN OF VAN HALEN, INTERESTING. THEY DID A GREAT JOB OF IT. COOL RECORDING. FIRST TIME EVER HEARD THIS. VERY COOL.
That solo was better that the man himself Trower
Can I just say that DLR sings very good here?
Trower, I didn’t think I could appreciate Eddie any more than I already do.
I was doing the same...lookin' for Robin...stumbled on this!
DAVID LEE DOES NOT EVEN COME CLOSE TO THE GREAT JAMES DEWAR.
I don't think anybody disagrees. That doesn't take away of how cool this is.
