This song has grown on me BIG TIME since i 1st heard it a while ago! Encompasses all the wizadry of Ed! Simple song that kicks u in the teeth, with springy wirey guitar licks and that tasty fat tone....with all sorts of signature Ed licks! Good Lord!!!
I've heard a few versions of this as the years have gone on, and of course, the Big River updated version too, but for whatever reason, this demo take is my favorite version. I wish this song could have been released back in the day on Van Halen vinyl. It has just about every Van Halen element that made Van Halen, well, Van Halen. What I mean by that is go listen to "In A Simple Rhyme" off of Women And Children First and that entire song beginning to end demonstrates the various guitar work, the insane drum work, the prevalent base sound not usually heard, the slow, the fast, the lyrics, the vocals, the harmonies (man, Michael Anthony was a background vocal harmony God), etc. etc., and I feel that "In A Simple Rhyme" completely encapsulated what Van Halen was and every sound they had. One package. "Big Trouble" was right up there with that. The MIGHTY Van Halen. And just remember this folks, Edward Van Halen didn't learn guitar... the guitar had to learn King Edward. Miss him and his gift. Shred in peace, Ed!
To add, would LOVE to hear this with Ted Templeman behind the board instead of Gene.

that solo is absolutely incredible. such a visionary at such a young age. amazing raw talent. everything absolutely dripping with groove. like, every part of him is completely in sync and enraptured in the music. I genuinely don’t know how he did it!

Edward was clearly on an entirely different plain one that separated him far above and beyond everyone. His style, choice of notes to apply and equally as important what not to apply was, in my humble opinion, liken to only one other Guitar player ever and thats Jimmy Hendrix.

I remember the first time i heard VH, we used visit my cousins in Alhambra from Nor Cal and my older cousin had their first album i think even some bootleg stuff, i was 12 and blown away, the Seventies in L.a. were crazy wicked hot with a 5 year drought the smog was so bad it was like a permanent haze, but that was the back drop of this band So raw, so dirty, just bad ass, i will never forget that summer and the music. every time i hear this new VH i just imagine, the Hot Smoggy Los Angeles Area that these guy's defined....

With Templeman they redid most of the songs that were originally on the Gene Simmons demo. The Simmons versions were much better, IMO.

The version on A Different Kind of Truth is far superior. Dave's singing here is terrible. His limited vocal range is really exposed here. And I loved the guy with VH! Solo, not so much.
