I’ve been looking for a procedure how to change the tranny fluid on a 61 Ford Thunderbird with a Cruise-O-Matic and wondering if the procedure is the same as described in this video?
Hello..I have a 62 Galaxie with a 390 and cruiseomatic. I smelled burning feom the transmission and i couldnt change gears when trying to park. I sat in traffic for a while.ao it got hot.
Looking. For advice about what to do for my 1965 mustang convertible we just got we been doing a ton of work on it but it’s in really good shape for the most part ☺️ The C4 green dot Is giving us a trouble Won’t go in gears right My research is seeming it might be clutch plate issues We checked all linkage changed out, trans filter, checked fluids. It goes into reverse once then won’t go in again It seems to want to stay in forward gear all the time and it’s difficult to find a neutral and the motor seems like it’s under torque, no matter what gear you put it in never a true neutral. Any thoughts are appreciated And of course most likely need a good transmission rebuild guy 🤗
I am not a transmission expert but I have rebuilt a few. Sounds to me like a problem with the shift linkage/mechanism inside the transmission. Could be as simple as dropping the pan and fixing the problem and wouldn't need a complete rebuild or require removing the transmission from the car.
You can use an end wrench attached at a 90 degree to the torque wrench to torque with out adding additional fps to your torque it is a standard use for the aviation industry.
I thought a C4 and a cruise-o-matic were totally different transmissions. Never heard of a cruise-o-matic C4. Also, as far as I know. cruise-o-matics have a cast iron center section. That trans looks to be aluminum.
There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. You're right about most Cruise-O-Matics being cast iron case, and they were through the 50's and early 60's. The C4 was introduced in 1964 with aluminum case and used in Falcons/Fairlanes/Mustangs or anything with 6 cyl or small V8. Ford decided to keep the name Cruise-O-Matic attached to it for some reason and did so through the 1966 model year. At least this is how I understand it. Thanks for the comment.
When the transmission is shifted into gear or shifts on it's own, different bands which have a friction material inside them engage with a rotating drum to cause the transmission apply or transmit power to the needed gear train in the transmission. These are adjusted when the transmission is rebuilt and normally do not need adjusting again. Since I was changing the fluid and making the video I decided to double check mine to make sure they were correctly adjusted. Thanks for watching and I hope this answers your question.
Put a small dot of white fingernail polish on the top of the square adjustment bolt. This makes the adjustment easier to count the turns and less apt to make a mistake. The new C4 was first called a Cruise-o-matic to try to maintain a smooth transition from the real Cruise- o-matic to the new C4. Just like the original Cruise-o-matic, Ford kept the dual range shift pattern. This seemed to just cause more confusion. Ford-o- matic, Merc-o-matic Cruise-o-matic. Just too many "o-matics.🙄 Then finally it was just called the C4.
Thanks. Your video nails the procedure!
Thank you for this video, My question, is this adjustment value the same on all (year) C4 transmisions?
Yes, I believe it is. Thanks for watching!

Yes, should be the same or at least very similar.
Would it be the same service for my 66 Fairlane 500 with 289 auto?

Sounds like time for a rebuild. Make sure the fluid is not low first.
Great video. Does transmission have to be in neutral before adjusting bands?
No it does not. Thanks for watching!

That's a lot of transmission adjustment going on.

Thanks for the tip!

What is the purpose of a band adjustment? First time i ever hear of this. Interesting stuff..

3/8 & 3/4" tools for bands
