Multiple Grammy Award-winning superstar Mariah Carey will headline "A Home For The Holidays With Mariah Carey", a touching new entertainment special to be broadcast on the CBS Television Network. Chart-topping R&B girl group Destiny's Child, successful teen soprano Charlotte Church, young opera sensation Josh Groban, Latin rock and pop star Enrique Iglesias and pop music sweetheart Mandy Moore join Mariah Carey as performers on this third annual special.
Following the success of the past two annual shows, this year's special continues to present inspirational stories about adoption to raise awareness of this social issue. Gold medal figure skater Scott Hamilton, multiple Emmy Award winner Patricia Heaton ("Everybody Loves Raymond") and Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman ("Rain Man", "Kramer vs. Kramer") present these moving stories.
Four pre-taped story segments will be presented by celebrities who either have had their own adoption experiences or are deeply involved with children's issues. The stories highlight many exceptional American children and families involved in this rewarding process. The inspirational stories of these American families are enhanced by moving performances by some of today's most popular performers. Mariah Carey opens the show with a medley of "Never Too Far" and "Hero" and performs "Reflections" and "I'll Be There". Charlotte Church and Josh Groban perform a duet of "The Prayer". Destiny's Child, returning from last year's special, perform "Emotions" and, from their Christmas album, "D.C. Christmas Medley". Enrique Iglesias sings "Hero". Mandy Moore performs the song "Cry".

agreed! it truly is... the album, the remixes, the performances, the holiday specials, her looks... every single thing about it. i hate that very few people appreciated it when the era was live and present. but i know i definitely did, and still do!
Its a soundtrack not an album
It's like she did magic to her voice in 2001. Her vocals declined rapidly from 1998-2000, then in 2001 it's back so strong again.

i dont get why people say that about 1998-2000. there was no vocal lapse in any of the new tracks of #1s or the rainbow album. i thought she sounded tired on do you know where you're going to, but she's said for years that, if she doesnt get sleep, you hear it in her voice. you cant deny the vocal power in songs like i still believe, bliss, and cant take that away, etc.
Based from her memoir, I believe this performance was just right after she was released from the facility she was in. So her voice was the most rested that is has been in many years....

Vocally she was on form, so resonant and those whistles, such ease.. soft The performance of Reflections was stunning.
INSANELY gifted.. that fucking tone.. my lord... cant even explain how blessed she is.. that richness, her control, the uniqueness to her voice & her transitions from notes.. too good
wow her voice was AMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZING HERE simply incredible! And people keep saying she lost her voice in 1997! OMG people wake up! She has good and bad days and nodules that have grown, but I think what girl needs is to sleep...then she can sing like this! Thats it! Girl doesn´t sleep! Luv Mariah!

Mariah's singing style is entirely different and inspired a generation of singers in its own right. If Mariah was inspired or learned from Whitney her style would emulate hers, which it doesn't.
Mariah is not Whitney's student she debuted a few years before her, hardly enough to had much of an impact on her life compared to Aretha, and the older legends of her childhood and early teens that actually influenced her style.
Coming before someone doesn't mean everyone else is copying them or their "student".
Her voice was just beyond phenomenal here. Beyond brilliant. And this is all completely live, right?

Marian's voice was simply glorious here, magnificent. I truly think this was a vocal peak here for her. I've seen Marian twice in concert and I must say that when she's on form like this she is easily the best singer in the world. Great passion, agility, power and emotion combined: untouchable in my opinion.
That whistle is 1 of my favorites between Never Too Far, and Hero!

really? i thought Rainbow was the end of the 90s sound. Glitter and Charmbracelet, to me, ushered in a *whole* new era: that old-soul, vinyl sound.
Her voice here was PERFECT: slight rasp, outstanding resonance, airy and light whistles, constancy in the registers and most importantly, TONE 😍

I have Sjogren Syndrome, which dries out eyes, nose, throat, and innards. I'm a teacher so I talk all the time, so my ENT will take me off work for vocal rest. The environment (too cold/hot), spicy foods, over usage of your voice, improper hydration (sodas, beer, wine, champagne), stress, and weight effect your respiration and voice quality. Mariah like many other performers neglect themselves. Performing is a double-edged sword, always performing, trying to stay true to yourself, and often running on empty. Male rock artists can kinda get away with a bit of scratchiness/raspiness/huskiness with it being seen as raw emotion. Unfortunately, our culture tears apart female singers when they get older and have a difficult time performing complicated runs or intricate dance moves. Rest would be best, IMO, but when touring she would benefit from using her background singers to carry her through songs while she interjects low/high notes, a vocal run, and a sustained note. If she used a system like mentioned above, obviously changing the order to keep the fans interested, she would give fans a good time. Also, it's a concert, and she's allowed to modify her own songs, like slightly slowing down the melody of "We Belong Together" so she's not so red faced and winded from the final long note in the song. Songs like "Anytime You Need A Friend," My All," "Can't Let Go," Heartbreaker Remix, and Thank God I Found You," contain natural spots in their choruses to use background singers. This type of change will also increase revenue for " concert only" renditions of her songs. Sorry, I've given my z-list opinion.
She did a different arrangement for Thank God I Found You and We Belong Together. If you watch Thank I God I Found You Vegas July 19, you would hear her 2001 voice peeking through.

Her second vocal peak which went all the way into Emancipation era. The tone (as always), flawless transitions, agility, fluidity, falsetto, whistles, resonance...she did amazing! ❤ Glitter is a great album and the era is not as bad as people make it - a platinum record. Deserved.
She "broke down" because she was fighting her malicious ex-husband and corporate power. He used all he had to sabotage her career/life. Sort of a "I made you, I can break you" thing. She didn't sleep for days, which led to that event. We all know what could happen to a person mentally, emotionally, physically when you're sleep deprived and at the end of the rope.
She bounced back like no other!

I remember watching this live. She was transcendent.
Mariah is a genius because even with a failing voice she somehow makes MAGIC.
It's insane to think she was singing these songs so soon after the Glitter fiasco and yet then completely swore them off on the years after. It's almost as if she wrote the album with this special in mind. This was a weird time in pop culture, hip hop was about to explode with Eminem on about to release 8 Mile and the mainstream networks didn't really want to promote it. This special could have aired anytime in the late 90's up until like 2002 2003. Feels very similar to a lot of wholesome tv specials featuring likeable pop stars of the past century

She really went through a rough 3-4 years following all of the 2001 troubles. She lost some of her confidence and I think she was embarrassed by the decline in success... but mama channeled all that hurt and really put it in the music. Beautiful performances in 2001 of NTF/Hero... one of my fave songs. The transition from NTF to Hero is so haunting and powerful... 😭

It's crazyyy. After daydream her voice changed. It took on this smokier, cloudier tone for butterfly, rainbow and number 1's and then magically in 2001, the clarity from the early eras was back like it never left! It stayed this way thru Charm bracelet and the emancipation and then changed again for e=mc2. Mariah probably has the most controversial voice in music! 🦋
