She wrote this song to be so tailor made for her voice that I’ve never heard anyone sound right doing it. And don’t get me wrong-i love good covers and have loved many random covers of other Mariah songs over the years, but this one is oddly untouchable. I’ve seen vids of people doing their thing and matching it note for note, but something about the lyrical phrasing always makes them sound more constricted and nasal than Mariah even in more recent years. But sweet Jesus in 2005-2006, even on a raspier night, those E5s felt like they were bursting from the depths of her despair. And it really makes the difference between the song sounding almost whiny vs Mariah sounding like a literal force of nature almost demanding that her lost love return to restore the void left after his loss. Tbh, even though the lyrics fit a lost love/breakup storyline better-I’ve always felt like Mariah’s delivery on both the artistic and technical side conjures raw widow grief. Like softly expressing the loss and regret for getting caught up on small things and lashing out by telling her man she didn’t love him anymore, but then having to live with the burden of those being her last words. Building up to such desperation to take it back and have just a little more time that it’s almost like she’s trying to resurrect him, the anguish is so intense.
So well said, and basically all of her songs are tailor made for her because usually covers of her songs are not so good, with we belong together especially the climax, her voice soars, its beautiful, high notes are pleasant and open, she projects in such a resonant way that it sounds majestic, people tend to sound reallllly really metallic and almost like screaming, because its a long climax and she can handle it beautifully, people usually get exhausted and is 99% not pleasant

I truly think this is live. There was absolutely NO change in sound or tone or volume when she went into the climax and she was a little throaty and backed up on some lines but overall amazing

The lip syncing starts at 2:53 at the Baaaay-bee part. Her voice magically sounds rejuvenated and even the audience takes notice which is why they erupt in applause because before that moment the vocals were a bit struggly.
