The only recording I can find where a conductor takes Czerny's and Schumann's advice to skip 1 bar at the near end of first mvt
This is the passage between the tutti arrival in Bb at MM. 491 and the final series of volleys 4 measures from the end. Whether LvB wanted to ‘square’ back to a 4mm phrase at the end while the ear may want to hear it as before with the recap at letter G is a question to ponder. Whether it works in this performance is unquestionably, ‘Yes!’
I haven't heard Beethoven's #4 symphony for a few years but it is truly Beethoven. The melodies, the instruments, the structure. Maestro Gielen seems to enjoy his work. And why not? The composition is wonderful as are the musicians. I love to watch symphonies being performed: the interplay among the musicians and between the conductor and orchestra and the glimpses of the actual musicians performing. Bravissimi a tutti

Very nice performance & recording, if picture resolution were higher would be much better.
Why not German trumpet??
This is an excellent Beethoven #4. It is pathetic that the attendance is so meager. The late Michael Gielen, a great admirer of Carlos Kleiber's, really knew what he was doing. The tempi are very close to what Carlos used.
Except that Carlos could not hold a candle for Gielen.
I find it a little bizarre that there is only one flutist and assume that # 2 is out - sick. I can't imagine Beethoven writing this symphony for only one flute? And all other winds have 2 musicians!
It was written for just one flute, actually. Not that uncommon in those days, because the tuning problems of having more than one.
Does anyone know when this was recorded?
