I love how the design includes the windows. I’ve only ever used saunas inside of larger structures (like at the gym) so never really considered the design of a standalone sauna. Looks great!
Hey Chase, just wanted to pop in and say thank you for posting this. I built my sauna shortly after you posted this video and used your layout with a couple minor differences. We have it set up on our property facing the mountains, we use it frequently and couldn't be happier. Cheers man.
So glad you called it a "sow-na" and not a "saw-na". Brings back memories of living in the U.P., getting hot and sweaty in the "sow-na" and jumping into lake superior
I really like the design and it looks amazing. However, I would personally swap the place of the bench and the stove. You want to sit on the side where the roof is highest, because that's where heat will pack in as warm air raises to the top. It's ok to have the light bringing window behind you. ~Greetings from Finland.
But you see how then the door & benches would not play well together. You'd open the door and bench right there. Or you'd need to compromise the length of the bench....all for a little more hotness. This design is fine
Beautiful sauna, nice work. Improvements, the heater should be at the side where the ceiling is lower and the benches on the opposite side as the heat moves to the higher areas, this to avoid heat pockets away from the seats. Also, inlet vents low on the same wall the heater is installed and outlet high on the opposite wall, to create the air flow carrying the hot air along the sauna. Possibly you don't have issues because is a small sauna.
Bravo! Came looking for some comments about vents. I've been researching building one and vents are pretty important for heat flow and especially drying the sauna out after use to prevent mold.
Have been debating buying vs building for some time, in the end, the building just makes it fit better with the garden and what I want. Your explanation on the floor and the teeny gaps finally solved that riddle for me, thank you!
@@juniorjunior2499 I'm UK based so everything is in £. Just starting so full costs are not there yet. Base and frame is about £300 including some insulation. Biggest cost I will probably see is the internal cladding and the heater. I'm hoping to keep the cost to just under £900

I am excited to try it out but wondered if you wear your Garmin Fenix 7 pro in the sauna, and if so have you experienced any issues? I have the same Garmin and would like to not break it haha. Thanks!
Thanks very much for this video. I'm wondering about ventilation. You noted small spaces between floor boards to allow air in from below. Did you incorporate any outward venting at ceiling? I note, for example, that the instructions for sauna room construction in the Harvia heater manuals call for "3 mm vent gap" between ceiling and wall. Just wondering what you have done. Really like your design.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm building a Sauna and I'm learning a lot from your experience. What is the maximum temperature you can get in a sauna of this size and this type of insulation?
I love this so much. Thinking of maybe doing a similar project, totally curious if you ended up seeing any thoughts on using things like pressure treated or the rockwool and them steaming/offgassing into the sauna when using it? I know you have the cedar inside and all. Again, looks amazing.
As a rule, nothing that can offgass dangerous chemicals are alowed inside the sauna. So no treated lumber, plastics or anything like that. Rockwool is actually the inulation many people pick, its safe behind an aluminium foil vapor barrier. The only exception, is the floor. If your sauna is well designed, the floor will always be cold enough to have basically no offgassing.
I love how you explained you got energy pulsing through your veins and immediately cut to a scene of you relaxing in the sauna, oh wait, I mean the action shot of you pour water rather than sitting still. 😂😂😂
I did not insulate or do any underlayment under the cedar floor boards. I put a bug net to prevent bugs from entering, but I wanted to maintain the drain abilities and ventilation through the gaps.
What is the angle of the roof line ? Were you at all worried about moisture collecting and running down the barriers behind the siding? Is the gap in the flooring enough for intake ventilation ?
It looks awesome. Does it cost a lot to run it? The heater looks like the 8KW model, where I am in the UK that would work out to be about $3 an hour assuming the heater was on for an hour constantly.
I'm starting a build right now and I hope to make it as close to yours as I can. One thing I noticed is you didn't mention intake and output ventilation and also, why is it shorter on the seat side and taller on the heater side? That seemed pretty strange to me
Did you do furring strips on the inside that you mounted your cedar T&G boards to? Or did you tack the boards up right against the foil thermal barrier into your studs??
