We lost our dear Fred at 12 in january. Im a commercial fisherman and my wife did everything she could but I didn't make it home in time to say bye. During the trip, a few days before she passed, I had a dream on the boat that her and I were sitting in this endless meadow. All of a sudden she snapped her head up and stopped chewing, like she would do in real life, and then kinda smiled (it was a dream), and then turned and ran off through the field. I jumped out of my rack and started steaming south to get phone service so I could call home. She was fine. But 3 days later, she passed in the night. That's a true story. The reality is that I kill things for a living, scallops at the moment, but when you nurture and care for an animal like these sweet little creatures, it makes you a better person.
Our female Guinea pig just passed on August 5, 2024 at 7 years . She was just diagnosed with arthritis in her spine and feet, she also had large stone, cataract in her eye.😢. We miss her very much. R.I.P. Cinnamon
So sorry. It's heart breaking when they die, but 7 was a good age. I still cry for my first ever guinea girl that died May 24 2023. She was 5 1/2. I still have her companion who is 6 1/2 but really slowing down. She has lots of health issues. My purpose is always to make them as comfortable and pain free for as long as possible.
My first male guinea pig died at around 9-10 years old. Very lively even at his old age, but his body shut down on him. His partner is still alive and she's around 7-8 years old. Very fortunate to have them living a long life as much as they can.

I think even my second piggy, Nikita, lived to be quite old - maybe 7? Old man Cecil is currently 5 and I'm still hoping for more time with him. I've been unfortunate enough to have a couple go quite early. Most recently my Samson only made it to about 1.5 years as he seemed to have some kind of neurological issues (suspected brain tumor). Love piggies so much and I just wish they could be with us for longer. They're so sweet.

Though we were prescribed metacam, which helped her significantly, I decided I needed to do some more research to give her the best quality of life I can in her senior years. This video helped a ton and I really appreciate what you're doing for Mimi and I.
My old man piggie Amazon is over 9 years old! He is getting old and stiff but still keeps ticking and enjoys his food and treats. He also puts the other boys in place!
My oldest guinea pig was 9 years old. She was actually phenomenal. I used to spent holiday on coutryside and there were bunnys aswell. She looked at them everyday and later she started to act similar, once she heard unusual sound, she was lifting on 2 paws and looking around. She also loved sleeping in bed so much, that later when she realised once she pee there, she is taken back to cage. So she just never peed in bed. I had to take her back to cage to let her pee cause she didnt want to :D
I mostly have rescue piggies, so their background is never fully known. I had to say goodbye to my granny pig of 6 years in november. She had only 1 upper toothie left (for more the 1.5 years) and twice a day I cut her veggies in bite sized pieces. In the summer I sat on the grass next to her to pluck all the good pieces, because she was unable to pluck them herself. Every month I took her to the vet for a tooth trim and a health check. In may 2021 she was diagnosed with lymph node cancer and we knew we hadn't much time left. But she was a fighter. Me and all the other piggies still miss our little miss Unicorn. Her name was Trottinette (which means Scooter)
Watched this video at the realization I had a senior piggy and a going to be senior piggy. I'm so proud of myself to know I've already been doing some of the things in the video. I've always gave them fleece bedding and a couple years back gave them a cage where there was no ramp they had to climb. Water bottle is always in the same spot and now I know to move the pellets closer to the water. Thank you so much for the tips!

I think my piggies ended up living for a long time. I got them when I was 6 and I believe they lived until I was 11-13. They were really sweet, handsome Abyssinian boys :') I miss them a lot and I hope I can rescue some pigs in the near future!
Ultra cute and ultra informative - great idea getting piggies used to syringes when they’re young, and using a pillow to allow Lyra to support her upper body was a really clever but very caring tip. They may be old but they’re very wise! xx
Brilliant video with great advice. The mum I have is coming up 5yrs and her 2 daughters are 2yrs next month. Had to make an emergency vet visit a couple of weeks before Christmas, as the mum Poppy was struggling to eat. The vets kept her in because she had a problem with her molars and they anaesthetised her and ground down the molar which was also lacerating her tongue. I picked her up the same day and gave her critical care food for a week to help her put some weight back on along with some pain meds. She's doing ok now, but will take her back to vets in a few more weeks to check her molars again in case the issue is going to be ongoing.
I had a piggy as a little girl and unfortunately she didn't live long. Now as a grown woman with kids of her own I adopted 4 piggies. My oldest boys are 4-5 now (we don't exactly) and they both have lost some weight and 1 of them is growing cysts now and has chipped molars. So he's most likely in his end days. Even though he's still rocking it daily has fun and eats like a champ.

We just took our 6 1/2 year old piggie to the vet because he was loosing weight and seemed to be in pain. The vet gave us some pain medication so we are hoping he will be feeling better. She said he looked like he was quite healthy, just old! We were very relieved! Our other piggie, the same age is showing no signs of slowing down!
not sure both are recuse but the one is def older or had ruff life sadly but at least he spoiled now but his little front feet are miss shaped as if got broken or something im not sure thay didnt have much to say about his past but hes a big beautiful loving guy that love hanging with my girls witch i original got for them but thay stole my heart and more mine lol im def a helicopter guinea pig dad when ever the girls have him lol i cant help it but he has seamed have more trouble seeing as well these are the meany reasons why i think hes a senior just wont what ever time he has left to be as happy as possible as the other is opposite to him he looks and acts younger more freasky but alot more skittish any way i super appreciate your videos thay have been super helpful since ive brought them home over a years ago now so thank you
This is such an important topic. I actually recently made a video of the most common illnesses in Guinea pigs. My oldest right now is 5 along with my second oldest who is 4. This video will be helpful for any piggy owner. ☺️❤️
For those with intact males, it’s also good to know that as they age they can also be prone to impaction. Some males can lose their muscle tone around their back end and find it harder to defecate, causing a build up in their perineal sac. My eldest male needs some help with that and requires extra cleaning and a diet specified by the vet to keep him healthy and comfortable. More fibre, less sugar and treats. Depending on your area, physio is actually an option to help older piggies with arthritis as well! Speak to your vet to see if there are any specialists near you.

I binged a lot of your videos and did a lot of research on how to handle this. We got Alex Saturday (a different breed than Max) and she loves them and Max is warming up to her now and she almost melted when she held Max in her lap yesterday feeding him carrots. The only weird thing is that Max is REALLY quiet and Alex is not.
Great video!! Yes, I agree with changing up their diet. I used to feed tons of veggies but as my piggies got older it just caused more problems. They get small amounts of veggies and tons of hay. Having a vet fund is also important with seniors because there are going to be vet trips 💓Great video!!

I have 12 piggies atm Name age/owned Jasper 6mo/3mo Rocco 3 1/2yr / 6mo Ginger 6 1/2yr / 6mo Itsy 3 1/2yr / 6mo Peanut Butter 3 yr / 6mo JJ 3yr / 3yr Gerogia 3yr / 3yr Sugar 2 1/2yr / 2 1/2yr Spice 2 1/2yr / 2 1/2yr Grace 4yr / 2yr Daisy 2yr / 2yr Penelopie Pig 3 1/2yr / 1 yr we got Ginger and her son and daughter (Itsy & Rocco) along with Peanut Butter from a young lady going off to college. Poor Ginger is not only our oldest piggie but our first blind piggie. She lives with Itsy and PB and while slower and newly blind she's still seem a happy old lady. Baby Jasper we were lucky enough to get to let Rocco choose between 3 newly found piggies at a rescue who knew i needed a friend (and facilitated the rehoming of the 4) he like Jasper and that is HIS baby lol he gets so stressed when we have to do anything with Jasper without him.
Brilliant video Sarah and thanks for some really useful tips there. Great idea to get younger piggies used to 💉 syringes before you might need to use one. My piggies have one of those heat pads the very same-it’s very cosy and they 💕 love it. My oldest girls will be four in a few months and the youngest are two and a half x

My Ginnie Matthew quit walking 2 weeks ago ,He will be 6 in few days ,He lost weight and started not eating as much for over a week ,he quit drinking his water out of his bottle
My baby girl will be 3 years old this november. She's an only guinea pig, i tried to introduce her to others but she doesn't like it, ever since then she's been an only child. She's my first piggy and i love her very much, im quite nervous for her reaching old age. Wish me luck🤞🤞
She is 5 soon to be 6 in may.😍 her cage mate passed so i decided since she has slowed down a lot i dont wanna stress her with new cage mate right now... Idk if that not the right thing..
A new mate will help her with grieving. Our vet said it's a good distraction. I wouldn't recommend keeping her solo. You can always do side by side for awhile longer, it's still better than solo. If you get a fixed boy they will bond quicker in my experience. But while grieving she may be more inclined to accept a new piggy easier. But yeah I sought keep solo, not good for her and she may become quite depressed.

we got Ginger and her son and daughter (Itsy & Rocco) along with Peanut Butter from a young lady going off to college. Poor Ginger is not only our oldest piggie but our first blind piggie. She lives with Itsy and PB and while slower and newly blind she's still seem a happy old lady. Baby Jasper we were lucky enough to get to let Rocco choose between 3 newly found piggies at a rescue who knew i needed a friend (and facilitated the rehoming of the 4) he like Jasper and that is HIS baby lol he gets so stressed when we have to do anything with Jasper without him.

Brilliant video Sarah and thanks for some really useful tips there. Great idea to get younger piggies used to 💉 syringes before you might need to use one. My piggies have one of those heat pads the very same-it’s very cosy and they 💕 love it. My oldest girls will be four in a few months and the youngest are two and a half x

My first piggy lived until 7. Had to have her put down, as she had a tumour in her throat. Had my current boys 4 years.

My Ginnie Matthew quit walking 2 weeks ago ,He will be 6 in few days ,He lost weight and started not eating as much for over a week ,he quit drinking his water out of his bottle

My baby girl will be 3 years old this november. She's an only guinea pig, i tried to introduce her to others but she doesn't like it, ever since then she's been an only child. She's my first piggy and i love her very much, im quite nervous for her reaching old age. Wish me luck🤞🤞

She is 5 soon to be 6 in may.😍 her cage mate passed so i decided since she has slowed down a lot i dont wanna stress her with new cage mate right now... Idk if that not the right thing..
A new mate will help her with grieving. Our vet said it's a good distraction. I wouldn't recommend keeping her solo. You can always do side by side for awhile longer, it's still better than solo. If you get a fixed boy they will bond quicker in my experience. But while grieving she may be more inclined to accept a new piggy easier. But yeah I sought keep solo, not good for her and she may become quite depressed.
