  • I review, breakdown and explain the 2023 Netflix movie The Strays. I discuss the story focussed on Cheryl who was now Neve living a different life in the Suburbs with her family Ian, Mary and Sebastian. I react to other characters such as Carl and Dione and the ending of Neve leaving her family again.

I like how we visibly see her go into her fake self and pretend everything is okay right before the food gets delivered and she leaves them. She was so grateful for a way out, apologized and took her leave- even after knowing Ian was being killed in the other room.
I don't think she is fully capable of loving her children- new or old, fake or real. She will always run from them.

I think it has something to do with her trauma with her past which affected her daily life? She chose to escape the abuse by leaving and later on finding out that her son killed her current husband I think in her mind she felt like she's back again in the past with the abuse and she wanted to escape it again. For me, it was somehow a blessing in disguise that she chose to abandon them again. she somehow unintentionally saved the other two kids from being killed. because i think her other two children won't be satisfied killing the other two without the presence of their mother. I just hate why they chose to become criminals.

@@gabeexc I assumed the ex husband was being abusive when she said " your father, he was a very dangerous man" .. " I don't know if you remember what it was like on coldharbour" when they were at a diner. I read on a comment before that coldharbour lane is somehow a dangerous area due to the high crime rate.

@@cirigaming9377 I agree, it's deep cause it had to have been something to make her so afraid of them...if you pay attention cause why was she so afraid. It's like the movie is trying to throw you off but I do think it's either she saw that the kids were different, evil even from a young age and something happened and then with everything else that she was going through with the father that made her leave.
Cause I was like why was she so afraid of them why not introduce them to her new family but you could see the evil in their eyes.
That aside It's like the movie is showing that she develop the fake persona to both protect her from her past life both mentality and physically. From changing her name to even the wigs, maybe the reason why the aunt didn't want them is cause she knew they were evil. And then now I think she have PTSD maybe thats why she takes the pills, she can't take certain stress and situations so she mentally and physically clocks out. I was wondering if she was going to fight when the older son and her daughter came, but she knows she won't win, she knows that if she try to upset them they will go over the edge and harm her. So maybe when she came back down stairs.......yes she already planned to run away I believe cause she had the jacket but once she noticed that her husband the one person she knew who could defend her was dead, she decided that she can't do this and runs......cause yeah she could have was planning to run and ask the delivery person to call for help. but to me is like once she knew the husband was dead.....is like she looking into the mirror she saying to herself what can I do.
over all I do think she loves her family both of them...but something about her seem to be that she can't handle stress she is dealing with something and I kind of understand if she didn't want to tell her new hubby that she had kids cause she didn't want him to leave her but still if she had told him earlier he then would have decided if he wants to stay and I guess she wasn't taking no chances cause he was still part of the key to her living a better life. and her older kids represent a old life of pain and suffering that she just couldnt handle at all.
or i could be wrong n she just don't want no problems at all lol she just likes to dip when the going gets rough and never really loved anyone but herself.

@@cirigaming9377How is it that she can be excused for abandoning her children because of past trauma, but her older children are not understood for their own traumas they most likely endured from being abandoned by their mother, father, and other family members? I can only imagine what they went through because of her "choice". It's just sad her husband and other children had to suffer from her decisions.

I personally think Carl and Dionne wanted to be accepted by Ian as well. When he said he wanted a divorce from Neve, Carl ONLY saw it as Ian rejecting them because they were black. When in the weight room Carl said, " You are not going to walk away that easy." He was taking his frustration towards his mom on Ian because Ian represented the life their mom abandoned them for. They wanted Neve to want them, miss them, and act like she would make them a big happy family, but even then, they would have always been jealous of their 1/2 siblings . I thought this was a great movie on so many levels. Her wig itching and driving her crazy to me was her black antennas alerting her that something was awry.lol😂 Her raising money for children in Africa (like white people do) then discriminating and lying on the one's right here in your face because she was uncomfortable and scared. I can go on and on,this movie has layers and I like it.

  • @kogarasumaruv9289
    @kogarasumaruv9289 ปีที่แล้ว +556

She was a bad person, it wasn’t stress or fear that made her run the first time, it was her feeling entitled to better life. She blamed her failings on being black so she tried to eradicate all traces it, from the way the she speaks and acts to the way she uses wigs to hide her natural hair. I’m also going to assume that the coldharbour she was refering to was Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, a predominantly black area which was linked with gangs amd drugs.
The revalation of Carl and Dione being her children would of been a stain on the life i’m assuming she worked so hard to obtain. She was actually the only person who was hyper focused on their skintones, the rest of the village didn’t show any disdains towards them.

My analysis of neve is she never loved/cared about both families, I think she was more obsessed with being accepted and living the life she felt she deserved. Her 2nd family fit into that narrative perfect house, husband, career, beautiful kids. She never loved them she loved the idea of having them to build the life she wanted. The min the lie was exposed she left cause it was over, ie when the husband asked for divorce, and kids finding out the kind of person she really was. I will say at least she was consistent across the board she only thought of herself. Good movie

I really liked the movie. Perfect run-time, good acting and a taught story. I knew Cheryl-Neve was going to run as soon as she totally changer her persona from scared to the "everything is all right" Neve stiff-upper lip type. When she asked the Uber driver to wait for a tip and went upstairs, I knew she was getting something to run away again. She coldly assessed the situation and did what was best for her. Which makes me wonder what she did as Cheryl and if the kid's father was really a "bad" man.

She was a horrible mother but most black kids grow up in single parent homes. It’s just too far fetched that they would retaliate to this magnitude over her leaving. They should have made Neves actions much more egregious. She left…ok wow, lots of people do that to their kids. The twist should have been she had killed their father. She was the only Black woman in her village, the headmistress of a private academy, and salesperson of the year times over. She was shown to handle stress perfectly well. What she DIDN'T handle was the same thing the majority of characters (and audience) feel uncomfortable in attributing to her: shame, accountability, and consequences.
And it is indicative of the psychosocial issue we have in today's (western, democratic first world): society has a very difficult time saying a woman is at fault for her actions and should hold the brunt of shame, accountability, and consequences. And a woman experiencing shame, accountability, and consequences can only be seen as equitable to her experiencing abuse and oppression.

Ian’s death was supposed to be symbolic. From the beginning of the movie it’s explained that Cheryl feels like her life is hard because she is black. She was good at her job but no promotions no raises she was just a light skinned woman with 2 black children and a black husband. Fast forward she has the life she always dreamed of she gets to be the person she deep down felt she was. When Carl ask Ian how many kg’s he’s pushing he says a few. The death by weights was supposed to symbolize the weight that would come with everything that’s attached to Cheryl the kids their life. Basically he couldn’t hold the weight literally but the think point was to be figuratively which is why he wanted a divorce. She not only left her kids she left them with her sister who ended up giving them away. This means they ended up in the system and some where along the lines some bad things happened to them. Which is why Carl just stopped peeing in the bed and Dione was in a facility. The same way Cheryl attaches her hardships to being black they attached theirs to her. If she left because she didn’t want to be a parent they probably would’ve just killed her or took the money. They thought she was dead to only find out she left them to start a new life have new kids and act as if she’s a suburban white woman.

Those kids went through their entire childhood and adolescene without their mom knowing that she left them to start a new family. So growing up thinking that she left cause she hated the family. That'll psychologically screw you. With the mixed kids the mother only then just split. Those kids had their mom confess her illness to the father and kids so they sort of had the luxury of having her and the dad as a family at least. Even though she was trying to control the kids hanging out with black children. If anything I think they're more concerned about her illness than angry.

I guess I’m a jerk, but I don’t feel bad for the children. The older children were out for blood and the younger children took her for granted. I thought they all got what they deserved. I love the commentary on motherhood in this movie. Mothers are not people in society, they are romanticized self-sacrificial saints who are both put on a pedestal and in a box. I think the hardest part of what really broke the childrens' hearts is that the mom wanted to get rid of them by telling them to go back to where they came from with two separate cheques.
As much as how the children wanted the luxury lives they have missed out, it's more of the nurturing and loving mother they were hoping to find. But it turned up more disappointing and therefore the revenge took place.
I think the father died innocently. But also a trauma projection of the father figure that the children never had.
Ending just pulled all the children together, I believe.
A shocking realization that it's not the children at fault, it's the life that the mother has created and abandoned as soon as it longer fits the way she has planned it.
Actually all the characters in this movie are victims of hers.
Of how she wants to live her life and how she's seen by others is far more important than the people in it.

What did this video even explain about the ending(for anyone that actually watched the movie)? She bailed, again.. It wasn't exactly rocket science to figure out. And does anyone else feel a bit off about how the fate of that bully from the school, and Ian, were completely glossed over in both the movie, and this video? I mean, with the bully, it looks like Sebastian hit him in the face with a basketball, but then the screen goes dark. It almost seems to imply that they killed that kid, but not a word was spoken about it afterwards.. I used to bounce a basketball off my forehead when I was a kid. So, I can confirm that death from basketball inflicted head injury is not possible, but the plastic bag was ominous enough to suggest other outcomes. And after that weight dropped on Ian, we hear a *Snap* then nothing else.
If he were simply in pain from busted arms, he'd be screaming his head off (so quite it's probable, as this video suggests, he was instantly killed from the weights likely dropping on his head, or neck), and neither his kids, nor his wife even bother to check on him or try to help him. I mean, he hardly deserved that.. He didn't even do anything wrong.
Apart from that, the only thing that confused me about this movie, is why she was acting so scared in the beginning just because she saw other black people standing, and looking at her.
As a side note; this video suggests that in the end, the kids are "all on the same side". But like, naw bro.. Those other kids just broke into their home, flooded it, scared off their mother and murdered their dad. I'm pretty sure Sebastian and Mary want absolutely nothing to do with the other two.

I agree. There’s so much that was left unresolved. And honestly, even tho Mary and Sebastian are now newly-marked strays, I am really not sure if they even make it out of the house alive. Assuming Ian’s dead, can’t imagine Carl and Dione letting their half-siblings live out of the fear that that the cops would be called.
