Ecology major here, I volunteer at a zoo. Originally I wanted to be a zookeeper, that changed but I kept volunteering because zoos have contacts with a bunch of organizations that can help you. I interned there and lined up helping a professor at a university with her research into bats.

That's awesome! Yeah zoos are fantastic routes in to lots of different strands of work in the environmental field. Since making this video I have worked at 3 different zoos!

I have a zoology degree and ended up working as an ecologist, with my youtube channel as a side project for wildlife education. I definitely think that with any sort of wildlife or education position one of the most important things you can do is show you have genuine passion. I got an unrelated education role in the past based on volunteering in schools, and an animal keeping role based on both the education work and volunteering with animals, and all of that combined contributed to me getting my ecologist role. You never know where one seemingly unrelated job will lead you!

      That's an amazing testimony.
Was your goal to be a Zoologist, Ecologist or something else within the field of Zoology?
I would love to be a wildlife biologist or zoologist however I don't think any universities in my area have zoology major but there is ecology, general biology and environmental science.
However I am working on my experience I just recently volunteered for a several places and got the position at 2 of them. I was hired at University of D.C (C.A.U.S.E.S) the second one is City Wildlife Rehabilitation. Hopefully these moves take me somewhere, I really want this, I love helping the environment and animals.💚🌻🦆🦙🦘

@@DNGH814 I don't really know much about the US job market, but in the UK it doesn't particularly matter if you study zoology or ecology because they basically teach you the same skills. My goal is to research animals, hence the zoology degree, but what I learnt means I can apply my skills to my ecology career.

Awesome video Steph! Editing is such a good one, I always forget about that. My friend did that virtually between field seasons while travelling.

Thank you! Right? It's so overlooked but considering how often academics, particularly early career academics, end up on short-term contracts it's actually the perfect in-between online-only job!

I got a Zoology BSc (first) last year and have been stuck for work since. I have a full motorcycle licence (which isn't good enough for most jobs), ride in all weather all year around (and off-road). If I was rich, I'd just volunteer as this sort of work is exactly what I want to do, but paid. I don't want to climb the ladder, I want to help the environment and stay hands on, and not just to enable the building of housing estates. I'm at a loss.. I'm happy in all weathers and seasons and being in the mud too. Also I find a lot of job applications are those no-CV, answer 4 personality questions type of applications, which I hate!

I studied Music at university but I want to go into Botany. It seems like it could be quite difficult for me, seeing as my highest Science qualifications are my GCSEs, in which I got a C and a D. I thought I disliked science as a teen, but I think I was mistaken. Any suggestions on what I can do? I want a job that involves learning through doing, something like inspecting plants in a field in search of new discovery. I was working as a plant maintenance technician for a company that installs and maintains plants in offices, but I found the job too repetitive, so entrenched in capitalism, and I think a little too client facing for my liking.

There are horticulture apprenticeships available on the UK government website where you can get paid while learning about plant care, could that be something of interest to you? It might be worth looking at! It sounds like you might enjoy doing environmental assessments or ecology. I would recommend figuring out what your "dream job" would be, and working backwards from there. It might be that you need to take a bridging course at a college to get a stronger science foundation, but it is also definitely possible that you could find roles where you learn on the job.

I have a BS in forest ecosystem science and at 45 years old now I’m looking for a new job. I’ve been doing my own business myself for the last few years creating native plant gardens and I’m looking to get a regular steady job now. Before that I was an agriculture inspector for 16 years but I had to leave. I’m looking at a job driving a garbage truck or as a mail carrier assistant. But it would be great to find a job that actually considers my education.

@@StephintoNature Thanks - well it’s been very difficult to keep finding people interested in what I typically do. I have done loads of very cool projects for the last few years and I just hope I can keep finding work. I can’t find any jobs in southern California with my degree and experience so it looks like I’ll have to keep on trying to find more native garden projects to do for clients.
