Antonio, I have been a Subscriber for the past few years, I love your content. Unfortunately I have to disagree with the fact that midnight blue or black suits work for black and white tie. Black tie means a black or midnight blue suit with satin lapels. And white tie means tails.

  • @xjimmy225x

I've always said your first suit should be a navy suit, most universal. Your second suit, and your least worn suit, should be black. Saved just for formal occasions and funerals. From there you can add a grey or a seasonal suit but I would recommend considering a tux, depending on your job of course

why is navy blue more versatile than midnight blue?

    • @xjimmy225x

@@justStardust940nothing wrong with midnight blue but you'll have more selection diversity with navy. Black, dark brown, cognac and light brown shoes/belt all go with navy. You'd be limited to black with midnight, maybe a dark brown

    • @badgasaurus4211
      @badgasaurus4211 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@gabbbbbz No, if anything black is more restrictive. Brown shoes with black doesn't work. Blue shirts with black don't work. Plus, wearing black screams funeral or the most formal of scenarios excluding the specific dress codes like the semi-formal black tie and formal white tie. Navy is far more versatile. Weddings, interviews, business meetings, graduations etc. You aren't wearing a black suit to a wedding or graduation.

I have a selection of navy and grey to charcoal suits but my favourite one is my dark blue suit. It's somewhere between blue and navy and is a little bit more modern but I think it looks really sharp. It's also very versatile and might be the perfect colour for a blazer imo so I can wear it with non-matching slacks/chinos/jeans etc

Great article Antonio. One thing I'd like to point out for black suits is I'd recommend either peak (for short to average height people) or shawl lapels (for above average to tall people) as opposed to notch lapels. I've always felt like notch lapels are geared for business or casual style wear.

I just bought my first two suits. Custom made here in thailand before I head back to Vegas for a business event. I'm a big guy and not used to dressing sharp. I usually sweat a lot and just wear what's comfortable.
I decided to go with a dark blue suit (not navy) and a light grey. Since it's sweltering 3 months out of the year and hot for 6-7, I think I'll get more mileage out of these colors. I also went with an aqua blue linen blazer. When I saw the jacket for the first time tonight, the color is so much LOUDER than I expected from the swatch. I hope I'm able to pull it off.
It just goes to show that when having custom clothing made, it always comes out looking a bit different than you picture in your head. The blue suit is perfect. The linen blazer is a bit too light and bright. I hope the light gray comes out looking good.

This series is great. It helped me realize that things I like on other people don't necessarily look the best on me. It's something I would definitely not buy anything new without checking out first. Even the watch video from before. In this video I would have liked to see a comparison between these colors with and without pinstripes, but I am sure there a whole separate one for that. I am glad you mentioned overseas environments as well. When I was working in Tokyo it was very different.
    Thanks and keep it up.

I own two suits: a black one and a light gray one, both from Zara. I use both quite regularly, and I never get tired of them.
Don't forget you can play around your suits and use them separately. Example: brown brogues + navy slacks + light gray "sports jacket" (the suit jacket). Or... black dress shoes + gray suit pants + black suit jacket. The other items (tie, PS, shirt, and others) will easily give richness to your outfit if you choose the right colors.

My approach has been to have multiple navy suits with rotation...different liner / accent button color coordinated with the tie. No other suit color. When I started, I used charcoal, but gravitated to navy because everyone around me was wearing charcoal.
When I was in law school, all the young (I was in my 30s, they were out of college) bought black suits for daily office wear as law clerks. One bought a black zoot suit with white chalk lines. They wouldn't listen to experience. They looked silly.

I think Navy should always be the first choice for a suit, it formal enough for most context, works well on most guys and can be dressed down if neccessary. Next choice is Charcoal Grey and then Medium Grey. If you had to own three suits then definitely get one of each, you can get them all as three piece or maybe one or two as a three piece and one double breasted.

I guess my country (Norway) is really formal, because 90% of the men I've seen (including myself) wear a black suit when a suit is appropriate. The only thing that's really different is the color of the tie, so nobody wears a black necktie unless it's a funeral.
With that being said, I started last year to wear a charcoal grey suit for events like theatre visits (not the cinema), dinners at nice restaurant, and some semi-formal parties

Medium grey, to me is the safest. Almost any color shirt, tie and shoes can go with it. Then again I just started wearing suits about 6-7 months ago and I just turned 50. What do I know? I did find a place near me in NJ. My suits cost $140-$230. Yes I know cheap, but fit very well, especially after a few minor alterations. To me it's about the fit, not the fancy expensive fabric. Each to his own.

Thanks for all the great info.
    1. Light blue and light grey. Great spring-summer-autumn suits. I had them (particularly light blue) and got a lot of wear out of them.
    2. When you say navy I actually see a blue suit on my computer screen. Navy would be much darker. I'd feel like I'm dressed too dark in true navy, same as I would feel with black. I've had dark charcoal and light-ish grey (Prince of Wales). Alternated between those two for a long time.
    3. As I'm well into retirement, I don't need suits any more. But I have two - medium blue (what looks like navy in your presentation) and a true blue. They're both good.
    4. You didn't mention navy blazer with grey or tan pants. Excellent choices for business.
    5. The big thing you missed - brown suits. Excellent for business, especially when everyone is earing blue of some sort. You can lighten brown up with a lighter shirt or tie and brown shoes.

I’d say this much about black suits: as a musician, it’s very much a staple of our wardrobe for stage attire. It’s like a uniform in many situations, because as a sideman you’re often relegated to being relatively unseen while staying well dressed and cleanly put together. I’d put a black suit on any time I’m called to be a sideman. Even as a bandleader, I’d wear a black suit if the situation called for it.

I enjoyed the video, but there are two more colors I want to hear about from you: dark brown and Tan. Will there be video on those or is there already?

I’d like to have more suits but I have only a true blue one. I’m 17 by the way so I guess I still have a lot of time to add items to my wardrobe ;)

Another great and informative video I personally have dark navy charcoal gray and black all of these fit my lifestyle because they work with my skin tone and what I planned to do careerwise and also when I have a formal but I am still constantly adding more foundational colors whenever I get the chance
