  • In May of 2023 my son Joe and I walked the Camino de Santiago. It was my 3rd time walking The Way in Spain and my son's first time out of the country. We carried the Osprey Kestrel 38 liter backpack and we both wore Brooks Adrenaline shoes.
    My Camino Packing list below has every item I bring for walking The Way, and links to my current recommended products.

    Totally similar life
    experiences, and as I’m seeking peace through travel, found your post. Thanks for the inspiration. Life’s tough, but you have to keep on trucking…When your son ditched his shoes at the end, my heart sunk a bit. Anyway, healthy and safe travels ahead.

    Thank you for sharing your experience and your story. What a fabulous opportunity to share with your son Joe. That is an experience that cannot be replaced by anything. I share your thoughts on living for today. When we are on our deathbed we will not be thinking about work or material possessions. Buen Camino!

    Thank you for sharing such a great video! The views of your surroundings that you were able to capture are as beautiful as I have imagined. I loved that you shared some of your personal thoughts and working through the traumas of life. We all seem to have them to one capacity or another. And the hope of the camino is for many of us to have the opportunity for healing. What a great opportunity to share this with your son, who by the way sounds like a native Spaniard when he speaks😉. Some day I hope to complete the full camino but for now I am happy to share two weeks of it with my daughter. Thanks again, and loved watching every minute of it.

    Got home from work this evening and this vid came up to watch.
    I especially enjoyed the Meseta segment; I get that many people don’t have the luxury of time to spend there, but it’s probably the Meseta that I picture when I think about my own upcoming Camino plans for this Sept/Oct ‘24.

    Great video of so much of what the two of you experienced. I have to say that is so great that you have a relationship in which you can share that adventure. My father and I never would have done something like that. Thank you so much for sharing the personal story of what brought you to the Camino. Looking forward to mine.

      I thought people might be interested in seeing the transition and how you slow down as you go along and get more clear-headed as the weeks pass. You never know where your thoughts will take you. Each one has been different.

    Thanks for the really nice video! Since this seems to be your fourth "Camino Frances" -- can I suggest to try out the "del Norte" sometime? Done that four times, and it feels like "home" to me (like I guess the Frances does for you). And yes, I will try the Frances -- I'm just a bit afraid of the masses of people there. I like a bit of solitude.

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Frances isn't too bad. There are people but there are long stretches where there's no one else around you, especially in the Meseta. In the video it was the busy season (mid-may) and you can see there's not that many people around. It's mostly the last few days where the crowds are heavy. With my knees not being good I sort of need to make sure I'm close to towns/cafes. I can't get too far off the path. I might do the Portugues at some point though.

      @RuedigerBerlich 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheCaminoGuide Ever thought about taking a bicycle? No backpack on your shoulders, and cycling puts different strain on your knees than hiking. You will be somewhat faster than hiking -- the del Norte is possible in 2 weeks, if you go fast (slower if you always stick to the "hiking" Camino). If this is not enough, let let the Eurovelo network lead you through France on your way to Spain. And you do get the Camino experience nonetheless. If not with hikers, than with other cyclists.

      Hmmm, and to repeat what Liselotte said: it is great seeing you do this with your son. As in her case, I did this with my daughter and am now repeating this with her and my two goddaughters. "The Camino" IS a metaphor for life, and you can learn a lot about your own life, just by walking (or cycling) the Camino. But I guess, I am preaching to the converted here 🙂

    Hey Greg I just subscribed to your channel, thanks for sharing. It’s my dream that my son walks the Camino with me someday, but he’s very busy with a new job up in Sacramento. Anyways, your son should’ve walked along with you, that’s a time when you both could spend quality time. When did you walk the Camino? Was it last year?, I walked the Camino from SJPDP to Leon in 18 days, i did it April and I got to Leon in April 31st and spent to days exploring the city before coming back home. Buen Camino

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      We started in SJPDP around May 3. I had some pretty serious knee problems, so there was no way for me to keep up with him and he needed to have his own Camino experience. At 19 years old it was important for him to take off on his own, something he doesn't really get to do at home. We got plenty of time together at cafes and in the evenings.

    Hey Greg! I walked my first Caminio a bit after this trip of yours. I began walking May 30th! That was my first trip and I went solo. I'm currently planning a trip with my college age daughter the summer before she begins med school in Summer 2026. Since you went with your son, how do you think it went? I could tell he wasn't a huge fan of being filmed haha but how do you think your two did together when not on camera?
    I'm excited to walk with my daughter but thought starting at different times is a good idea. I'll be 50 this year so I'll be 52 when I go again! Thank you again for your video!

      My son Joe is on the spectrum and not real comfortable with emotional/personal contact. He's lived a pretty sheltered life, so my goal on this trip was to give him a long leash and let him have some independence. It was good for him to sleep in the dorms and mix with everyone. I commented on this video that I thought he might struggle with it but he had no trouble at all. He did really well with the routine and found some things that he liked, bocadillas and Spanish beer... Got to use some of his language skills that he's been studying since he was little. Amazing how fluent he got in such a short time. Everyone's different, every parent-child relationship is different and requires different input. Joe and I, though we don't see each other much anymore, are still close. As far as I can tell he's comfortable with me and we've taken several road trips together. My goal was to show him a bigger world and give him enough space that he could spread his wings a bit. We had plenty of time together, generally starting the morning about the same time, and I would usually find him waiting at the first cafe for me to get him breakfast. Then we would hang out in the evenings over dinner.
      The upcoming trip in May he will be with his cousin who's the same age. They're both very similar, spectrum types, so they should have a good time. Having me there will be like a safety net, but they will have the freedom to take off on their own if they want. The Camino is a fairly safe place to be and hard to get lost, so they should be fine, never more than a few miles ahead of me.

    Thanks for the video. I've been trying to take my son on camino for the last 2 years. Unfortunately, I got injured at work and been on disability. This year, I finally saved the money, but USA IRS would not have it. They hit me with a huge tax bill and demanded I pay before April 15. Even though it was their mistake, they made me pay it. Hopefully, next year.

      Thanks 👍... I have a Samsung Note 20 ultra. It's a few years old but still takes good pictures and I like the Samsung editing features. I originally made this with a bunch of the music from some of my previous videos but TH-cam didn't like that and blocked it. So I had to remove the music and repost. Guess I'll just save that one for myself.

    Regarding booking albergues or a room ahead; via WhatsApp, direct phone calls or email.
    If you don’t understand Spanish- how does one call ahead to reserve a bed/room?
    I’ve been trying to learn a little Spanish over the past few months but still have only learned a few Spanish words so far - but even if I can speak a phrase asking if there are any beds available, eg., I won’t be able to understand their response in real time, over a phone call.
    How do you call ahead to reserve a bed if your Spanish is poor?

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most places in Galicia and the Basqe region we'll speak a little English, enough for you to get a bed. Also they know why you are calling. The area where they often don't speak English is in the meseta. It's usually fine to just text or email. You can write it in English and they will translate it or you can use Google translate and copy and paste. If you use the Buen Camino app It will usually have an email button and you can just message them. They deal with these messages all day, so they know what you're looking for. You just want to be clear and concise and explain exactly how many beds you want and whether you want a private room or not. I usually message them: ¿Hay dos camas disponibles? Or ¿Hay una habitación privada con 2 camas disponibles? (Copied from Google translate). And below that I will list my name and my son's name so if they have one available they can reserve it quickly without any back and forth. When they confirm, I message back, reconfirming that we will arrive before 2:00 p.m. on that day. That's it. Pretty simple. They do this all day long so they know what to do. If you decide you need to call them, the first thing I ask them is if they speak English. If they don't, then I resort to my minimal Spanish or I have my son do it as he is more fluent.

    How long did it take you to complete the Camino???

    • @TheCaminoGuide
      @TheCaminoGuide  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I believe it took us 36 days, including an extra day off in Burgos and Leon. So give or take a day or two, it takes about 5 weeks. You want to figure in a couple days to get to the start from whatever airport you fly into and you want to figure a couple of days to get out of Santiago. There is a small regional airport in Santiago, so that's one option, but I generally take the bus from Santiago to Porto, Portugal. It costs about 30 euros and it takes about 2 hours and will drop you right at the airport in Porto. It's an international airport so you can pretty much fly to anywhere you need to go from there. As far as walking goes, you want to make sure you have a few extra days if necessary, in case you end up needing to take any more days off for blisters or injuries. And don't pre-book the whole thing. I usually arrange a bed the evening before or the morning of, and I usually just email to see if they have any availability.
