Well I am glad that you love the lifestyle of being closer to the land , and growing/ finding/ hunting your own food. I am also glad that there are enough people around the world who spend their time earning a living cutting the timber, making computers, tractors, fridges, growing wheat, etc , and watching TH-cam., thus funding your choices.

Here in the UK an allotment is about 267 square feet and on that you can grow sufficient veg and fruit for a family of 4. A greenhouse will help in the colder regions to get crops started earlier and for the more tender plants like some tomato and pepper plants. A lot like carrots and some tomatoes can be grown in large pots and the smaller tumbling tomatoes can be grown in hanging baskets. Any root veg can be stored either dry or canned. You don't need a lot of ground just well prepared ground. Best of luck with the garden and greenhouse.

Once all siding on house and shop is done, then simply buy or rent a gas pressure washer and hit the boards. Don’t have to outthink or over do it. Let it then dry in the sun for a good week to 10 days. Don’t need to sand. Then stain.

Just finished up building a green house I can tell ya here in northern UT. It's 20 -30°F hotter in there than out of there currently for allot planted and trying to figure how to keep a good level of warmth year round will be my goals. But I know my growing season is greatly extended in there if u can keep the plants from baking to death or freezing.

  • @FallLineJP

A geothermal greenhouse sounds like a great idea. One thing to consider is that digging the structure into the hillside would decrease the sun exposure since you're on a North slope. You can always add lights inside, but maybe not the best option.
Have you considered digging a geothermal loop into the hillside? Should be quick work with the excavator, and can be quite cheap with some scrap HDPE/PP piping. You can size the system big enough to have a source of heat for the greenhouse as well as the shop and house. For those two, could provide just enough base heat to keep them above freezing, then keep using wood for "comfort" when needed.
Looking forward to see what you decide to go with, thanks for sharing these videos as always!

    • @scottremblay3373
      @scottremblay3373 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My Mom moved to Ireland, donegal County noth, by the sea. They used geothermal heat sinks to help lower the cost for heating and cooling their house. Eventually added a wind turbine for power generation because they are also up in hills and elevation. I've loved the work I've seen on big greenhouses in the ground that tie in water and hydroponic systems together. Making it big enough for some full size fruit trees is just a matter of going down enough with a great roof and pitch. You could also add solar and wind to tie into the greenhouse and supliment the house. Tilapia could even be added if you wanted to go into fish as the geo could be enough to help maintain constant temp. Giving you full time year round growing seasons. Looking forward to see what you guys come up with.

I was thinking about your wanting to build a greenhouse where you can grow things deep into the winter. I stumbled across a Family in France but just bought an old Condit it was starting to clean it up. The greenhouse they found there as they were looking it over they got to talking about how it was different from the one at the Château that they rebuilt. It was different because it was built down into the ground so that the ground was essentially at the level of all the tables in the greenhouse. It also had running water and heating ducts from the furnace that was in the basement of the convent. It was also built attached to the wall of the convent but I don’t remember what was on the other side of the wall. That way the greenhouse have glass only along one side both ends, and the roof. Obviously they were able to grow ve well into the fall as well as starting them much earlier than you could outdoors in the spring. I think I saw it with the caption “Touring our Convent”. The name of the series is “doing it ourselves “also “the Plethricks”. They bought a château and fixed it up and now living it, but they just bought a huge convent that includes an apartment building about a quarter acre courtyard (which they had to strip to the ground because of too many years of neglect) second and third floor had something like 40 rooms for the nuns there was a large chapel, classrooms of some sort and offices as well as a large kitchen with pre-electric storage for fruits and vegetables. Quite impressive really. Anyway you might get some ideas from them as to how to make a greenhouse that is protected from the wind yet gets enough sun to grow things in it. Hope all this helps you find what you need. Hooking it into the house heating system for you would not necessarily be a good idea since you have no boiler to run pipes out to warm the greenhouse. I don’t know if this will help but it is certainly worth taking a look at. I love your videos of the way you figure things out for yourself what works and what doesn’t work. Hope this helps.

Until next time, sending hope and love. ❤️

    Heath,
I have a question about the metal flashing you installed above the porch roof rafters. It looks like the flashing rests directly on the top of the rafters. When installed, the roof boards and the metal roofing will be above the flashing, not under it. Shouldn’t the flashing be raised so the horizontal leg of the flashing rests on top of the metal roofing, not under it?

That LAST closing shot has PEAKED my interest. New Snow Plow for RPR?
The Porch is coming along nicely. Love watching the progress and the Red Truck is looking sharp as usual.

I would love to come help, but there are two things stopping me. I live in Europe and I have trouble walking even 500 meters/yard due to heart problems. So I will be jealous of those that will be able to help you and at the same time, I will enjoy watching them work and have fun.

Have a great week RPR family. Starting to get pretty nice outside, and I'm hating being inside at work more and more LOL. Its time to find a much better career.
I was hoping you'd have more information about your new toy...err Snow Cat...but I guess that's coming in a later video. Always wanted one of those, but I'd have to haul it to the snow, we don't get enough here in Emmett, ID to use anything like that.

I agree, I'm from the UK and we would of set up a full length platform for ideal working height, a few hours to set up but once done its well worth it.

I Wish I had vacation time to take and help you! Hopefully one day I'm able to take one but working with you for a little while would be my dream job !!! God bless you and your family sir!! 🙏
