    The “new” California exhaust law isn’t really new. The 93 dB part has been in place since 2003 I believe. Just the lack of it being a fix it ticket has changed. My sti is turbo back, and all five of my cars I have had from 2003 to now all had load exhausts on them. Not once have I been pulled over for the exhaust being loud. I think this whole issue has been blow out of proportion.

    The only bad thing about modern STIs and WRXs is the lack of flared fenders. I have the same complaint about the RS. I love my flared fenders on my 2011 WRX. I get compliments on the car almost every day, which is nice too.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's absolutely amazing how much more aggressive aftermarket flared fenders makes the current WRX/STI look...the whole car just looks meaner. This from the factory would have definitely made the car look like a much sportier total package.

  • @LORDRA1DEN
    @LORDRA1DEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The problem with the RS is the same problem with the Evo: they put good mods on shitty base cars. I have a regular Focus and have spent enough times in the forums realizing that the same stupid issues I have are all present on the RS and ST. Like cheap materials for one. Then stupid things breaking. So far with 90,000 miles the trunk wiring is completely broken giving the trunk open alert and reverse lights no longer work. The car has transmission problems (automatic) even though it go regular services. The engine mounts are bad even though no one's beating up the car. The headlights on the regular Focus are horrible, you can't see anything (put in LEDs). The windshield wipers are possibly the worst design I've ever seen, they rattle,and scrape and silicon blades to the same thing, it's just a poor design with no frame on the blade. The brakes are a pain in the ass to change thanks to that hex bolt you have to undo to get the calipers off. Both o2 sensors are bad. Stuff just breaks left and right. Which sucks because it does actually have cool seats, it's very comfortable, it handles the road really well, and it's really solid. I also really like the stock intake. I added a K&N filter to that and left it alone. I mean I clean it, but looking at the design a CAI didn't make much sense. Now I know you're thinking that's what you get with a base Focus, right? But you shouldn't. Quality is quality. I had a 2008 WRX. Hatchback, of course. That was a great car. What Subaru started with was a much better car overall and made it much better. I drove that car till 85,000 miles and traded it on a Rav4. I got $14,000 in trade for that. They hold their value really well. I had it for five years and when I bought it I paid just over $20,000 for it (it had 7,000 miles, so it was "pre-owned"). The Evos are another one that start out with a shitty car and start slapping on performance parts. Between these two, I'd go with the Subaru. I'd hate not having a hatchback for this type of car, but I trust Subaru a hell of a lot more than Ford. My WRX, I never once put synthetic oil in it. I had it tested every year because either Subaru or the dealership did one free yearly check-up. I never had any issues with the turbo. Hopefully the new WRX has a hatchback version and keeps the manual. And if that Type R by Honda ever gets AWD and 3 seats in the back instead of 2, that might be something to get.

    Very nice rides l like them both but i agree the sti is better but i like the look of the hatchback rs more than the 2015+ hence why im sticking with my 2011 Sti hatch. The Sti are overlooked IMO especially the 2011-2014 Sti's and will only go up in price even more than they have in the last year. Some of my car enthusiast friends that drove my 2011 sti, bunch of basic BMW M3, M5, 911 weekend track worrier types and even non BMW nice people, agree the sound from the 2011 sti is one of the best 4 cylinder engine noise out there. I cannot wait to get my 2011 sti hatch back from the shop with a new type RA engine, custom built Hill country turbo, bigger injectors, e85 etc only "tasteful mods". In my opinion the Cobb intake down pipe exhaust helps the sti to be the best sounding 4 cylinder car out there. I stayed with the unequal length headers ,sacrificed some power, just to keep the amazing sound this car makes. You just have to hear these Sti's in person that rumble from the boxer engine w the Cobb exhaust the subtle blow of sound from the cobb intake and also the blue flames from the exhaust is just the icing on the cake no other 4 banger produces as much drama for the $ as the sti does. The Sti is a future classic but im probably somewhat biased since i was always a fan of the Subaru wrx sti.
    The driving experience you get from a manual car when you nail the shifts perfectly is something you will not get from a top end Tesla which is a great daily its so fast it will make you want to puke but it does that because its so quite there is no increasing engine noise to help your mind to anticipate that acceleration. The theatricality of an old fashioned turbo engine with its RPM and engine noise building up culminating in a perfect shift that kicks you back in to your seat will never be matched by an electric car no matter how fast it is.

      @Mrlolibre 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said the motor Is still stock internally so he's probably not trying to push the motor too hard. A rotated setup on an STI has a lot more room for power. 400whp is obtainable on a STI with a stock location turbo.

    That guy has a lot of work done on that STI for only 400hp. Did he say stock short block assembly? That’s a lot of money on a rotated kit and supporting mods to install it on a stock block.

I was keeping an eye on the RS but was wondering if it’s more reliable now (2018 2019), also which one is the fastest on those 2 models in this video... (could careless of the exhaust noise)... No offense but I smoke a guy with his STI, same setting and Turbo/exhaust noise as this video, pretty embarrassing making all those “performances noise” and stay behind... Anyway, which one should be the fastest in your opinion?

    Not sure you can say "Power and Efficiency" as a means to describe the STI engine. Basically the same engine as over 10 years ago which is showing. Not in the same league as its rivals in terms of power and efficiency.
    Its a cool car, particularly that one and the way it looks, but really it hasn't evolved nearly enough and what used to be the bench mark has really been left behind by its rivals.

  • @MrStuwr250f

    Great quality contend Marcus, you are now putting out some of the best quality on TH-cam. As an Sti owner, I agree with your conclusions too. Although, I like the basic layout of Sti interior, the plastics are pretty nasty, but then other than the seats, in the RS the interior looks very low rent. Golf R kills them both of interior quality but, that car doesn't excite me one bit.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why did they make the power band like a Fiesta ST...? Thought that was the trade off of a small turbo, I thought it would work like big turbos work and just keep pulling all the way to redline.. more fun than low down torque but then it's less usable so I guess it makes sense really....

    I owned an sti before my RS. Both "made" make 400awhp and the RS was faster, period. For a track car the RS wins no competition. But my sti was a better CAR, period. It was built better, it was less miserable to live with as a daily. It was easier to work on, parts were easier to get, after market parts were overwhelmingly abundant and cheaper etc etc. If I were to buy ether again "yes I know the RS isnt made anymore" I would go with the sti. Especially if subi removes head from ass and replaces the ancient engine.

    • @josephandreuccetti8043
      @josephandreuccetti8043 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Herp Derp Our local engine builders hate the design of the Subaru’s engine and they don’t understand why they stick with it. They really try to steer people away from doing big power builds. They themselves will tell you even investing big dollars into a EJ doesn’t mean it will hold. Once you take the engine apart and look at it. You would also know what there talking about. Then you even look at the 4G63 and you start to understand why Evos are so much faster and make so much more power.
      Plus they don’t like to rev while. 4G63 can rev to the moon.

    What kind of exhaust is on the RS in this video? Isn't it Borla S type catback ? It actually sounds sensational inside the car as well as outside. I have the stock exhaust on my 2017 RS but rear seats and all carpeting removed from the rear side of the car and the noise with the stock exhaust is much louder now. I cannot imagine how loud would it be inside if I swapped stock exhaust for the one in this video ❤
    Update: The exhaust on this RS is a perfect match for this car. Would you list your mods on the car? Especially the exhaust?
    Very inspiring video. Good placement of front license plate - haven't thought of it before - not many cars here in Europe have front license plate moved to the side of the car.

    It doesn't revv very high and you can't hear the turbo enough(if at all)...quite a raspy exhaust on this one as well.

    I don't know if anyone agrees with me on this or not. One of the most frustrating things that i see is putting a wing like that on any car. How do people think that looks good compared to the clean look of the stock STI wing or no wing.
