I get it, it's frustrating and Microsoft really suck for this. However, it's insanely ironic the amount of people there are who call Windows 11 things like "Spyware" and get annoyed at how invasive it is, while many of said users are using Windows 10 which is 99% as invasive and annoying. The ONLY genuinely valid reason to not go to 11 and to stay on 10 is if your PC doesn't meet the minimum requirements.
Having been skeptical of 11 up until January when I upgraded, I can comfortably say that the problems it has are minor, all the actual problems that users would be annoyed about can be disabled or fixed. But really, I feel it makes no logical sense to talk smack about 11 while you're using 10

It’s not “a little bit cheeky” but indeed outrageously disrespectful. I’ve been a fan of Microsoft for more than thirty years, and this event is one of the few times that the company really disappointed me. At the very least, they should pull back the update for systems having problems with it. I have two Windows 10 Pro machines and succeeded in installing the update on the one without any restore partition setup while failing on the other with a fairly large restore partition. Truly unreasonable and annoying.

I wouldn't say I've been a fan and I've not even been around that long, but I think being that it's what I've used all my life I can safely say that the mistakes Microsoft has made are not "few" as you say. I have frequently and constantly been dissatisfied with every single change they've made over the years, degrading my experience bit by bit over time to where I will never get another solely Microsoft computer again.
I loved xp, my first fulltime operating system, 8/8.1 weirded me out but I thought it was a trend that would pass because why would they want their os to be dumbed down more than it already was? Then windows 10 came and it was practically identical to 8.1 but things ran worse, compatibility died, and a whole bunch of junk was stuffed into it. Windows 11 is more of that degradation and every step forward they take two steps back.
I don't know how anybody who uses their computer for anything besides browsing the web can tolerate any of this. Microsoft has truly started selling trash.

They won't push out an automatic fix, as it would require 'shrinking' of the user's Data/OS partition, to make space for the increased size required by the recovery partition. Making arbitrary, automatic changes to the data partition 'could' in theory go wrong. Not only that, on systems with dual-boot partitions, which one would the automation choose to shrink? The potential for data corruption / loss, and the likelihood of users then wanting to sue Microsoft for said lost data, is the reason they aren't pushing out a fix for this.
It's not a difficult fix to get around this, if you are competent enough to use a command window, you can do the steps quickly. My system had the error, I shrunk my data partition by the required amount, using free partition manager software, then increased the size of the recovery partition to satisfy the update requirements. It took all of 5 minutes. Microsoft's nomenclature for the NTFS file system admittedly didn't make it 'easy', but it was doable, following the PowerShell instructions I've seen in numerous locations on the Internet.

Honestly MS kinda did this to themselves by putting the RE partition in a place where it cant grow. It was honestly just a matter of time before the amount of updates will exceeded the set aside space for the RE to exist. I can see why they wont fix this as there is pretty much no way to do so in an automatic way while also preserving user data. The windows RE is kind of a joke anyway though and users should just disable this anyway... It never fixes anything and pretty much gets out of date pretty quickly anyway.

    • @LaurenGlenn

It can grow. You just have to shrink the boot partition live in Windows. I was on a call on a work computer and he updated it on the fly without a reboot. I resized the partition to 1GB because I said "I'm doing this again if they do it again." After that, it installed fine.

fwiw - i finally fixed this myself on a win10 laptop by removing and re-creating the recovery position, this was the only thing that worked. my recovery partition was partition #3 of 3 partitions so I didn't see any risk. Also, the size of mine was greater than 500mb so I don't think it was necessarily a size problem. your mileage may vary, that was my experience. I used the command line tool only method and I did not change the size of the previous partition. It must be something else other than just the size of the partition being too small.

They have a PowerShell script to fix this, but the only problem is you have to manually run it yourself and you also have to manually download the specific patch file from the update archive that applies to your OS. I tried every fix in the book for those two systems, only a factory reset worked( and I will mention if you do a reset extend the partition before you do the reset). on one system it would not install so I hid the update. I may do a factory reset at some point on that one, but that is a chore in itself, and one I have not done the repairs to since it takes time to go through every fix. on my systems running windows 11 I have also extended the recovery partitions, just in case this issue ever shows it's ugly face in windows 11.
