Ian, really looking forward to this series. Badab War is one of Forge World’s best and the first to fully showcase Alan Blighs’ talent. It’s a testament to his visionary work that fans still maintain the Badab War lore and rules. Good on you for making a contribution this fascinating segment of the 40K universe and progressing it within the community
Im a taros campaign and siege of vraks man myself but I cant deny the badab war has some good stuff. Tbh I dont think forgeworld put out a single bad campaign book. Anphelion project and the fall of orpheus had that deep existential horror we dont see all that often in 40k anymore.
I get the feeling maybe it's the level of depth that forgeworld always - to me - put into what they were doing. I mean, even the computer editing they put into making the minis look real
Awesome! So looking forward to your video on the Lamenters! The poor guys were so mauled after their run-in with Hive Fleet Kraken that they couldn't even take part in the defense of Baal against Leviathan, and even Dante felt sorry for them!
The remaining writers behind stuff like the badab war have moved permanently to heresy it looks like. So on the bright side stuff coming out for that game has been and is continuing to be fantastic, the downside is 40k has kind of been left in the dust in narrative campaigns. Highly recommend finding pdfs of the Heresy black books if you havent read them
I was hoping this would explain why the Mantis Warriors are Kamen Rider....also I'm hella stoked for both tale of four gamers and chapter lore videos on the Badab War as it remains one of my favourite parts of 40k lore
I love all the Maelstrom Warders. They’re such a fascinating group of chapter misfits. Shame the Astral Claws turned out to be chaos worshippers, that is.
Glad my bois got a video. Have loved them since the Badab fw books. Always liked the really divergent chapters and how they manage to square that circle.
Hey Ian, I was wondering if you could do a video about tech marines and how they work in chapters/legions. They've always struck me as odd because they seem quite admech-y (they seem to revere the machine spirit) but are also marines. Any lore about them would be interesting, as well as if their lore has changed through the years since their first inception. Similar videos on Librarians and Apothecaries would be equally cool. Anyway, love the videos and your channel and looking forward to your next video :]
Thanks Ian! I’m currently painting Kill Teams for the Mantis Warriors and Fire Hawks. Have built 2 more teams, which I plan to paint as Exorcists & Astral Claws. 4 evenly matched Tactical Marine squads should make for some fun battles
Perfect timing. Vox in the Void just uploaded a video featuring the Mantis Warriors (“Prophet of Dust” iirc?). Can’t wait to see what their actual lore is like!
Nice video, one of my two favourite chapters, the other being the red scorpions. I’m currently building a reinforced battle company of these using heresy range model Mk6, and a smattering of vehicles for a badab themed apoc game later in the year!
you know how i know blood angels are cool? because writers keep giving chapters of other bloodlines the red thirst and the black rage. the fists and their visions of dorn and now these mantis death company
Great video, as always. I love the Badab War stuff you do, and hace always enjoyed the Mantis Warriors story. I agree with a previous comment, would love to know exactly why you dislike Goto, even if just in a reply to this, but really looking forward to the rest of the series!
Given what GW have just done to the Deathwatch, I think my troops are going to return back the Mantis Warrior ranks... I mean, their penitent crusade is over after all.
Love the shirt. I started a Mantis Warrior 2ed project and wanted to do all the fast attack with that scheme. But chickened out, so now they are just yellow 🤔 and I am shamed.

So Mantis are a potpourri of other chapters lore? Priests like the Space Wolves. Black Rage like the Blood Angels. A vow to hunt betrayers like the Dark Angels. Stealth warfare like the Raven Guard. Emphasis on fast attack vehicles like the White Scars (I mean, that one obviously)
They're kinda White Scars (wizards, meditation, fast) if they were forced to go more down a 'choose your time to strike' route than a mass charging horde. And the CS bloody GOTO shoved in a load of unnecessary Black Rage-lite rubbish.
We have a regular video series called Tale of Four Gamers. The next will be Badab, so we'll be building armies, and playing through games at events. No video battle reports because though because they're a nightmare!
