Between 1989 and 1993, people began mysteriously vanishing in New South Wales. When their remains were finally found, everyone knew something was very, very wrong. It was clear that whoever was responsible for these heinous crimes was targeting backpackers, and so the string of murders was dubbed "the Backpacker murders" or the "Backpack murders". Though this case was solved, many questions still remain. Join us for a true crime storytime covering the chilling case of an Australian serial killer.

      It would be more safe now. You just keep your phone out, texting your friends and watching a gps, take a picture of the person and their car, and never go to a secondary location if they start going somewhere you didn't ask.
      Gonna take me somewhere and kill me anyway? Hell with it, I'm grabbing the steering wheel. Aim for a river, trees, just start yanking that sucker around and see what happens.
      It's like the joker putting the grenade in the dudes mouth and walking away with a string on the pin. I can't get loose? Bomb in my mouth? Alright, guess we both die.

I asked the people who asked me that why they asked it, and they said it had to do with how I moved and kept scanning my surroundings more or less. Experienced military guys can spot me quite a ways away but I do find it odd that civilians can.

    • @Vynjira-chan
      @Vynjira-chan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      That's a super important detail, that I thank you for.
      I was gonna make a comment about character witnesses, because I'm kind of curious why they are allowed at all (without like medical or legal documentation to the effect, IE: A Therapist's notes on their character... or previous interactions with the law/legal system.. etc..), since so many people have an extremely 1 dimensional look at their character.. I mean I can name dozens of killers/serial killers mentioned on this channel IE: Todd Kohlhepp, or Lawrence Singleton...
      Lawrence was called a perfect neighbor, AFTER his crimes against Mary Vincent.. and the neighbors started to believe he was framed because he was just so nice and people couldn't believe he was capable of what he did. It is very often the case, that killers/rapists etc... are "Nice Guys" and we as a society have this habit of disbelieving that "Nice Guy" was responsible for a gruesome murder.
      Todd was described as a pillar of the community(same with Robert Hansen), and got along great with the cops interrogating him (same with Ed Kemper).. and we're all too quick to give someone credit based on this.. and ignore victims for their perceived flaws, I mean Robert Hansen targeted prostitutes and other undesirables for this reason.
      So I'm not sure why these character witnesses are allowed. (OH YEA, I forgot the Scream Killers are APPEALING the decision on their case, based on a couple of Character Witnesses that they found to help them prove they weren't cold blooded killers.)

    I was born in 1990 in Wollongong which isn't far from Belanglo.
    During the time of his arrest and trial I was still a young child and I wasn't aware of who Ivan Milat was and his crimes. It wasn't until I was older as a teenager that I talked to my old man about the murders and learnt about what happened in that state forest.
    I vividly remember my dad telling me a story of when he was younger and living in Canberra back in the 80's. He left home and was hitch-hiking along the old Hume highway heading towards Sydney. He was trying to hitch a ride when a man with handle bar moustache in a ute resembling Ivan, pulled up beside him asked if he wanted a ride. They talked for a few minutes and my father started to feel uneasy and was getting a bad vibe from the guy so declined his offer. In disbelief I asked my old man if he thought it was Ivan or not. He never explicitly said it was, but I could tell by the way he was looking at me. Crazy to think I might not be here today if my dad took that ride and it infact was Milat.

    That part of NSW where the Balangalo State Forest is located in is a beautiful area, but beauty is often marred in some way and, unfortunately, the area is known now as a graveyard and there are many who believe, as I do, that there were, even if they are no longer there due to animal predation, more bodies of missing people who simply disappeared but were never located. Milat could have lived 500 years and he would have NEVER admitted to those or any other crimes. My then husband worked for Corrective Services back when Milat had been sentenced and over the years he would hear just what a problem the man was, trying to get staff to believe he'd gone mad in order to get his retrial and a variety of other schemes. But all that were entrusted to keep him safely locked away knew just what a manipulator he was and were very careful around him! I'm glad he's dead because I believe in Hell and it lasts for more than one lifetime. Clive Small did a great job with the case and he should enjoy his retirement knowing that he likely saved the lives of other young travelers. And EVERY Australian is forever grateful to Paul Onions for coming forward! Unfortunately there will always be evil and always a predator seeking his or her next prey! Be vigilant and DON'T accept rides from strangers nor travel alone along highways and places where you're likely to end up as a victim if you can avoid it! I think a big reason we didn't have a whole bunch like the US is that the US has so many different states and back in the "golden age" of serial killers the police in different states didn't really work together and share evidence and cases, so killers could hop from state to state, whereas here in Aus not only is there much fewer states they are spread over a huge span of land.

But there was this one ride, we were in the middle of nowhere in Ontario, this brand new black BMW (the kind of car that NEVER pick up hitchhiker) inside was a couple, the man who was driving looked angry and didnt say a word, he was just giving us those look in his mirror. The wife was like this super good looking woman, in her late 40s. She started telling us that her husband hated hippies like us, and that she insisted to take us as an "experience". Then she started asking us if we were dangerous and if we were armed...Me and my friend were really spooked at this point, the ride was so freaking akward...Still in the middle of nowhere, we insisted that we wanted to stop here....They stopped, nothing happened of course, but with this i just wanted to say that looks mean nothing....this was the best looking ride we ever had...and yet this was the most scary....

    An auntie of mine actually lived right next to one of the Milats. I used to visit them with my mum every single week and saw them a couple of times (this was in Eaglevale, NSW). They were really weird and made me uncomfortable even as a kid. She kept almost… defending Ivan saying he was innocent and seemed really paranoid. I actually had no idea she was a Milat until one time I was talking about a time we visited my auntie and asked about “that weird neighbour” and my mum told me a bit about them. It all kind of made sense after that. Ivan Milat actually died in 2019 due to cancer in prison- a lot of us actually celebrated but there’s been a theory for a long time that there was a second shooter because of the differences in some of the deaths. Some of them were very up close and personal (which seems a lot like Ivan Milat’s style given he enjoyed making his victims uncomfortable) and others shot from a further distance like they were hunting wild animals. Quite a few people (myself included) believe that one of his siblings was involved in at least some of the murders (I truly believe Richard Milat was involved somehow because he just so happened to have evidence that he was just sitting on knowing what was going on and didn’t say anything until the Milat family were being investigated). He keeps saying his brother was innocent but continues with bizarre actions. The whole family is weird, but Richard also made me feel not right kind of like Ivan. One of his nephews even took up his notoriety (Matthew Milat) but instead of killing backpackers he killed a friend of his. That’s how creepy and unstable this family is.

    • @dwousybot69
      @dwousybot69 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I second that someone else was involved. There was too many differences in some of the killing for it to be the same person, serial killer tend to have a preferred way to kill. I’m also pretty sure there was similar murders after Ivan was in jail, but it’s been a while since I’ve read the information so may be wrong.

    As an Australian this whole story is crazy!!!! We were told this story in high school

  • @t-e-x157
    @t-e-x157 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    What evidence did the police get from the woman?
    I’ve seen spouses coach their kids to say things about their other parent because they have some dispute.
    Then again for kids, it can be difficult to keep a fake story straight unless they truly believe it.

    • @Dead25m

      Kids are also easily manipulated, so even if something isn't true, they might very well start believing it completely if told about it enough.

    really strange case. judging by the physical evidence, milat was definitely guilty. but i'm absolutely sure there's still something they missed. he probably adamantly refused to confess anything to protect his accomplice or accomplices.

      I think the Jane Doe who tried springing him and pinning the crimes on her husband was his accomplice tbh. There was so much evidence against Milat that it couldn't have _not_ been him.
