Those were some of the best engines produced by any manufacturer. You got it freed up, looks like it has the newer style pump in it, it's worth finding the blockage in the cooling system.... This thing will run forever, simple, rugged, reliable, and super easy to fix
Unfortunately mate although I did get her running it was too far gone internally to be an economical rebuild. There is actually a video up of my doing a live tear down of the engine to determine how bad the damage actually was.
An antique/magneto driven engine guru said that if your ever turning over an engine with a magneto, ground the output, as that energy needs to go somewhere. If you operate an ungrounded magneto, it stands the chance of developing inter-winding faults, the high voltage side can punch through the enamel insulation layer to layer, leading to unreliability and breakdown further down the track. Not really super important in this case, but just interesting to keep in mind when working on such things. I reckon you'd have no trouble picking up parts, and I also think that those old two bangers in good nick will be worth hanging on to. All the best, and thanks for the ongoing content.
Thats quite interesting regarding grounding the negative, I will try to keep that in mind. I am going to do a strip down and see what exactly needs doing and if I can get parts I may as well rebuild it too.
I watch Stu from Dangar Marine on you tube mucking around with outboards and I think this video was very entertaining. Stu is a mechanic and does outboards pretty much all the time but seems to gloss over the "dodgy brothers" way of doing things. Getting the engine to move was a blast.
I really like watching danger Stu he works on some interesting stuff, I had fun working on this little outboard just unfortunate it didn't turn out too well.
Looks like you might t have to take front cap off or fill sparkplug hole with crc and leave for a few hours let it soak but I would check eck to see if no damage to bore
Nice goin, got it to coff and spin for a cupla seconds. Mark [Wilding Sailing] and his Dad Steve got one going and there was so much smoke, a neighbour came by with an extinguisher. Nice job, running, although not well. These outboards seem to be a bit more complicated than inboards. Thanks m8, you and your Dad make a good team.
I did get it to run well at the end it's just the bottom end rattle that kills it unfortunately. I haven't watched Marks latest video yet but it's on the list.
In all the comments below I noticed no one picked up that the impeller was not under water. They are not self priming, they dot not pump air. I hate to see people destroy motors because they do not comprehend this.
This was entirely entertaining... in large part because I've worked with 2 stroke engines since 1960, but I was always doing the knuckle busting by myself. You and your dad have a terrific relationship, and your companionship is affirming and validating.. Thanks for the video. James
Well I forgot how smokey a 2 stroke outboard was. Thing is you give me that motor and all I would need is a tinnie.....Oh you have a tinnie there.....wanna send them down to me as well???? hahahaha Great vid Tim, I really did enjoy it. You and your dad are a hoot doing stuff like this
Don't throw it out. there is a lot of hard to find good parts on that little engine. Like that shift leaver on the side that is not broke. 99% of the time you get a used engine and the shift leaver is broke off.
Definitely needs an impeller also fill up your bucket with more water the water line needs to be much higher to cover the holes above the cavitation plate on the lower unit.
Unfortunately mate she needed more then an impeller. I did a live stream video where I stripped it down to investigate the bottom end rattle and she is beyond economic repair unfortunately.
@@evinrudej thanks mate, it's a shame it wasn't usable but can't win them all. I always keep my eyes open for good projects so I'm sure there will be more in the future.
@@HarpersShedHi, where can I watch the live stream of the engine disassembly? Link? At least the engine has a good impeller. I think it's common for people to miss putting in the water line right from the impeller housing, it requires accuracy. Nice channel.
Well, you can at least say that you got it running! The condition of the thing isn't your fault but you can rest assured that you discovered it's limitations and did it all in the garage, instead of in the boat out in the water somewhere! LOL I was entertained, and I think I can say that others were as well. Now you can gift it forward to someone else who has either the means or the inclination to make it run quietly and smoothly, there's always someone out there who has a bunch of old parts sitting somewhere that could be put to use to make it run close to speck. But remember it IS an Evinrude so it's not going to run exactly quiet. Fun video mate, see you next week! Cheers!
Yeah she was never going to be a bolt on and away we go sort of engine. I am going to pull it down and find out exactly what is going on inside and if parts are available I will do a rebuild. Apart from the rattle it actually runs very well.
What a rattling good post and don't worry I won't knock it, I was hoping for a big end ING 😅😅 sorry really bad dad joke's. On a Serious note is it not worth sticking in some new bearings in the old motor ??. Gary 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Hi the only difference between a 5hp and a 6hp is the carburetor. Quick tip take a spark plug turn into an air fitting and pressurize the cylinder ti will do less danag to ti the needle bearings also even pressure on the piston also forces oil into the rings.
Solid idea mate I will have to have a look around and see what I can make up for the next time I need to free up a stuck engine, I'm sure I will find another one lol.
I've had a few of those old Evinrude 6hp motors over the years - they usually sound pretty bad, so it may not be as terrible as you're thinking (although the sound is always harder to hear in a video than irl). I have a Suzuki 5hp you're welcome to have, but it's down south (Batemans Bay). Needs some work too (runs ok but cooling water isn't getting through the passages in the engine, so the exhaust plate needs to come off at a minimum, maybe more). Let me know if you're ever down this way.
Unfortunately this one most definitely has some internal issues mate. Thank you for your generous off of the 5hp, I will keep it in mind but as you say it's a fair drive and I don't go down that way very often at all but you never know.
@@HarpersShed You can actually learn more by pulling apart than you can by trying to understand the manual......sometimes you find there is an easier way than what the Manual says...Cheers.....
@@HarpersShed new rings, set points, needle bearing, impeller, carb rebuild and gaskets. Starts on starting fluid seems likd its not getting fuel. Even compression now but its still low at 50 each. Might go back into carb but cleaned it well so not yet.
The water was well over the water pickup so I thought it would be fine but that's not what killed it, she was rattling from the first fire up unfortunately.
That particular engine had over heating issues due to blocked cooling passenger in the block and head. When something is overheated that bad it will soften the rings and lose compression or will pick on the cylinder walls and scratch them. It is possible to rebuild but not cost effective as it's getting old and parts are hard to come by
