Tricks and Tips to getting a stuck engine free after 30 years. We try everything!

  • in this video we try everything to try to get an engine un-stuck that has been sitting outside with the spark plugs out for 30 years. We try everything from vinegar, to muratic acid, to brute mechanical force. This is a 1964 Ford Galaxie country sedan station wagon with a 289 windsor small block Ford and a floor shifter 3 speed manual transmission! This is our second attempt at getting this engine un-stuck. The first time we tried oil in the cylinders and turning the engine with the crank bolt. Stay tuned for future videos of the cool station wagon.

Your going to have to bore that block maybe 30 or 40 over to clear up those cylinders so you will get maximum compression or it’s not going to have any power and will sling oil out of the exhaust if it will even build enough cylinder pressure to even run. It’s worth doing if you ask me because that’s definitely a going to town car for your family.

Grandfather bought a locked up Farmall tractor. Put a socket, breaker bar and a ten foot pipe on the crankshaft with several hundred pounds of iron on the end of the pipe. Oiled the cylinders and walked away. Three weeks later all the iron was laying on the ground. Time, pressure, leverage and a bit of oil mixed with kerosene broke it loose. Just another weapon in an arsenal of tricks to use if all else fails. Good job on the video.

I was going to suggest Kroil, and Evaporust too. Probably the next step now, since the acid will eat up the pistons anyhow, would be a 0.040" overbore, or better yet an FE transplant!

Well done! For better and faster results, you should degrease the bores before you add your vinegar. Otherwise, the oil blocks most of the vinegar from reaching the rust. Vinegar still works with greasy bores, but takes much longer and is less effective. When you have rusty bores, the rust you can see isn't really the problem; you can brush and hone that away. It's the rust you couldn''t see that was locking up the motor. Phosphoric acid works quicker and better than vinegar. As you've already discovered, muratic acid also desolves rust, but it also tends to dissolve any alloy (eg, pistons). It's easier to neutralize acid with baking soda if you dissolve the soda in boiling water first. But well done, you put the effort in and got the result :)

Do you have any suggestions on a 3.4l Toyota engine that has sat for 3yrs and the rings are rusted. It will turn over fine it just sounds crazy with no compression. I tried ATF & acetone mix with no luck. It seems like everything just seeps past the rings into the crankcase before it has a chance to work. I haven't tried white vinegar or industrial vinegar. Just hoping I can find someone out there that can help me save this engine. Thanks.

@@dgmenace73 First you need to check the engine bores with a borescope to check that the valves aren't bent or the pistons damaged.
If they're okay, you must degrease the engine, or the rust remover won't be able to get to the rust.
Remove the spark plugs and DON'T replace them until the job is complete, or you may hydraulic the engine. Live with the fact that whenever you turn over the engine, crap will spray out of the spark plug holes.
Using a spray bottle, lightly spray in detergent mixed with water then cautiously turn over the engine using the starter. Repeat until oily crap stops spraying out the spark plug holes. Detergent foam coming out the spark plug holes is okay.
Then lightly spray phosphoric acid, Evapo-Rust or vinegar through the spark plug holes. Lightly turn the engine over to ensure an even spread.
Leave phosphoric acid for maybe 12 hours, Evapo-Rust or vinegar for maybe 24-72 hours.Keep the bores wet with rust remover at all times or the rust remover will stop working.
Then spray a small amount of water into the bores to remove the rust remover and gently turn the engine over by hand. Then wet the bores again and spin the engine over on the starter until crap stops coming out the spark plug holes. Repeat several times.
Then spray in some penetrating oil and turn the engine over on the starter motor until crap stops spraying out the plug holes. Repeat this several times.
Drain the engine oil and replace it.
Then replace the spark plugs and use engine starter to start the engine.
      Good luck.

@Clive Matthew-Wilson thank you.....I actually had watched so many videos that I had decided to at least try exactly what you said. Anything i have tried already didn't get a chance because there was still oil on the rings. I think this just may very well work and I plan on recording the processes. I already had regular vinegar and some of the 45% I think is what it is. Someone else mentioned to heat the rust remover and any oil to 145° since heat makes metal expand as well as makes detergents clean better. Sounds reasonable to me? I will let you know if this works and let me know if anything I just mentioned is a waste of time or a bad idea ( like heating the chemicals up some). Thanks for replying.

Check out the guys on the Restored channel. They are experts at freeing stuck engines.
Also if you can get a prybar on a flywheel tooth, you can get the best leverage.
Also use a 4x4 with a mini slegde to pound on the pistons.

Cool video, keep in mind 3rd gear gives you the most power and muriatic acid dissolves aluminum really not good for the Pistons. Check online for a product called Gibbs it's a high penetrant rust dissolver and will loosen most engines after it sets a few days, I think the engine might run but it's probably going to use a lot of oil unless you rebuild it

I love how these videos are a family activity, fantastic! Just started watching your videos last week and subscribed this week. I personally think if you try to run it the way it is the pistons will shatter. The structural integrity of them is compromised from the acid. Rebuild and save that little 289 powerhouse. Grew up with parents owning station wagons and I grew fond of them. Does that one have the rumble seat?
