Cleaver Restoration [Golden Cleaver With Golden Handle]

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 พ.ย. 2024
- I have used two new techniques in the restoration of this rusty cleaver. The first time I use a hardening furnace for the blade to harden and I galvanize gold on the formerly rusty cleaver. I made the new handle out of Osage Orange and brass, which now revealed a completely gold cleaver. Restoring the old cleaver I had to drill, grind, file, remove rust and glue. This old hand tool I found again on a flea market website and wanted it badly.
▬ What did I do ?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The cleaver was badly rusted, so I put it in rust remover for a day. I removed the remaining rust with sandblasting. Afterwards I made the rough contour with a belt sander and sanded the sides until no more pitting was visible, up to a grit of 1500. With the help of a grinding stone I sharpened the cleaver again. Now I gilded the old hand tool with the help of electroplating. The new wooden handle is made of Osage Orange. Now all that was left was to assemble everything and the golden cleaver was ready.
▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I used the following tools: Hammer, pliers, wire brush, sandblasting cabinet, corundum 0.2-0.8mm, belt sander, double-sided tape, orbital sander, multi-function tool, file, key file, hardening furnace, immersion heater, Rapeseed oil, forging pliers, stop angle, pen, steel ruler, saw, cordless screwdriver, drill, scriber, caliper, fretsaw, two-component glue, screw clamps, sandpaper (various grits), polishing bench, grindstone, galvanic current device, degreaser, activator, gold electrolyte

The gold electroplating was a cool little extra! I'd recommend shaving down that handle considerably more - the chunky, square handle has got to feel like a nightmare to hold in your hand 😱
It doesn't actually feel that bad ...
@@ForgottenShineRestoration Hi
Hi

More grip means more control.
Finally - a restoration video that actually gets rid of the pitting!!
There’s absolutely nothing better than watching your phenomenal videos on a cold day. Just the absolute care, dedication and quality you put into your restoration is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face
Thank you very much for your kind words!🤗
-11C where I am. Good start for the winter.
Aw that little ghost on the rust remover uncapping was cute lol
DANG! THAT RUST REMOVER IS POWERFUL!
@Candy Queen gacha it kinda looks like poison…? 😅 just me? Okay I’ll shut up now.
I was so with you until the last few minutes. I guess this is more of an art piece than a tool, which is fine, but not for me. You will probably forget more knowledge about crafting and restoration than I'll ever know, so I won't pretend to be an expert, but it drives me crazy to watch people put these razor sharp, super delicate bevels on cleavers like they're a paring knife. And to go through all that work and leave the handle a massive rectangle? It seems like you've got some pretty big hands so maybe it works for you, but man that ending was so anticlimactic.
Agreed
Yeah I’ve seen a few of these videos and he tends to make the handles big and bulky, which I find very unsatisfying. Amazing work pretty much everywhere else but those handles always frustrate me lol
I can understand the inappropriate bevel to play up the sharpness for TH-cam, but there's no excuse for that godawful block of wood for a handle.
I was about to say the same. It looks like half a job.
I agree but at the same time it probably takes almost a week to complete and it'll probably be very fustrating to use a small handle then it breaks And it probably fits him best so at the same time I disagree with you😵
This was an amazing restoration! The handle did look as if it would be uncomfortable to hold, but it was amazingly decorated! You have a new subscriber!
Thank you very much! 🐢😊

This is so so amazing and different from other createors' content, the best way I could put this is that it feels like an itch finally getting scratched.
Interesting handle choice there. Almost looks like it’d be fairly uncomfortable to hold. And Thats a very neat way of applying a gold plating!
Side note, turtle is my favorite recurring character of this series
Thank you very much! 🐢🐢
same thought i had
If only I could be so polite...
Nice, but the handle needs to be contoured for a more comfortable grip.
Why is everyone so mad about the handle, the entire cleaver is a work of art that obviously took so much hard work
Thank you very much! 🐢
What a beautiful piece of art! Love these, keep the knive restorations coming!
Thank you!
Big Fan Bro Big Fan♥️
This is a masterpiece. Congratulation from Vietnam.😉👍🍺
Thank you very much! 😊🤗
These videos are so cool and relaxing to watch. I think it is amazing how you restore items that appear in such harsh conditions and make them even better than they were in their prime! Keep up the fantastic work! And I hope all is well!
Thanks very much! 🐢
I would 100% buy this for my partner, we collect knives and SHES into really pretty decorative ones while im into more historical and unique ones, but I think she would love this as a art piece lol, 10/10 beautiful work
*idk why the “shes” capitalised my keyboard is buggy idk
Really, really good job. I always like how it goes from a rusty piece of junk to something that could potentially become a persons favorite item to use. The handle still looks a bit bulky but other than that great job.I’m a new subscriber but I watch ur vids all the time and today I forgot I wasn’t subbed to u. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much! 🤗🐢
This was amazing! I know nothing of metalworking, but the noises are so calm, I fell asleep watching these last night.
😅😅 im glad to hear it
The heart with the sand blaster made mine own heart happy. That, my friend, is the main thing I'd do the moment I got one 😂 one day! 😂
🤣🤣
I’m so glad this guy removed the pitting because other videos I’ve seen don’t and then the cleaver looks ugly this one was done very well
Thank you very much!
First one of your vids that I’ve seen. Very nice restoration and the polishing then gold plating was phenomenal. I think the wood and brass that you chose for the handle are great but it looks kind of bulky and unfinished. It’s still a great cleaver. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you very much!
A nice gift for Mr. Goldfinger. With this cleaver, he hadn't need to use a laser for cutting 007 into two pieces. 👍😁😇
Ooh! I love the shine, big fan of the golden design! Overall amazing job done by the king 👑
Thank you very much!
I want to call you a master of your craft, but that doesn't begin to sum it up. Thank you for such informative (and satisfying) videos!
Thank you very much! 😊🐢
No hate but that handle isn't it
the cleaver in the beginning without the wooden handle looked hilarious lol. like a little chihuahua tail
So shiny! 😀Great work, I really like the close-up shots. Nice touch with the gold plating
Thank you very much! 😊🤩
Never see the galvanised gold on before, that was cool. Thanks for posting.
Awesome job! Keep it up Bro! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Nice to read from you Bro, thank you so much!
This man goes out finding rusty things just to entertain us now that’s big brain

ВоПРОС ! Кому это дважды в час звонит вертолёт ! Оранжевому океану ?
Damn. I was sure that handle would be too big but actually seeing you hold it, it was actually seeming like a nice handle. Though, you do seem to big-ish hands so maybe those with small hands might have had a problem. I'm glad it looked so cool and looked actually nice to hold!
Excelente trabalho. Parabéns 👏👏👏

Hello and i really love your videos especially the process you do which is oddly satisfying, keep up the good work!
Thank you very much!
Osage Orange wood? That’s a fancy handle right there.
Thank you very much!
It's a good job, But the handle of this cleaver does not look so good, In my point of view if it will be round handled would look more beautiful. The Original handle was also round.
ok, thank you for your feedback!

fantástico, sensacional! Like garantido👍
A lot of people talking shit about the handle... I have seen a few of your videos and know that if you wanted this handle to look different, you would have made it different. I like the square look. Fantastic job 👍
Thank you very much!🤗🐢
What is that crusty stuff that came off when it was put in the oil?
That is an oxidation layer that was formed during the heating of the steel. Also called 'scale'. It's very brittle and tends to flake off during quenching. Perfectly normal but not something you'd ever want to leave on the steel for a knife like this. You can wrap the blade in steel foil or use an inert gas furnace to minimize oxidation during heat treatments.
@@CatalystRestorations That's cool! Thanks for answering! And the quenching is to soften or harden the steel? Cool it slow to make it softer and cool it fast to harden it?
@@Scott_G It technically depends on what type of steel you are dealing with, but in general the faster you cool (quench) the harder the steel. Quenched steel is usually very brittle though (good strength, but can't absorb a lot of energy before breaking, AKA material toughness ), so after quenching you usually heat it back up again (lower temperature this time, called tempering) to soften it up just a bit to keep most of the strength but also improve the toughness and give you the best of both worlds!
@@CatalystRestorations Wow, that's so much more complicated than I ever thought it would be. Thanks again for the explaination. :)
@@Scott_G Welcome to the field of metallurgical engineering! 😁
15:15 guys be mature.
My hands seem way too small for the handle, but it looks very pretty.
Also the gold touch is just *chef’s kiss*

yes is very good 😎👍🏻
love ❤️ from @amrphone
I often wonder in your Blades/ Knives/ Cleavers restoration, you do a single tone edge finish.
In future videos could we see 2 tone finishing (acid etching/ clay baking/ etc). Thanks for another great vid :)
Welcome back Welcome back

Vielen Dank 🤣👍
I love the minimal effort design
These videos are so fascinating (and frankly relaxing) to watch
Thank you!
I watch these before going to bed. Much like a bedtime story for adults with a happy ending! This inspires me to try my hand at this, before actually learning how to forge and make my own knives and swords someday. I kinda cringed when I saw the thickness of the tang being inserted into the block of wood! But apparently it must have worked in the past as it's not broken beforehand. Not sure how to ergos of the handle are? Great editing, humor and love your explanations for everything!
Thanks very much! 🐢
Was anyone else surprised by the length of the tang? I kept expecting it to end!
😂😂😊😊
These knife restorations are real pieces of 🎨🎭 Art. Please keep them coming.
But always mix things up a bit.
You are so good at what you do. Every video the tool is restored good as new.
Thank you very much! 🐢
Loved the little ghost.
Love it 😍😍 impressive rust remover, wish he is a bit faster in working.
Nice job , but the old handle was more comfortable and more beautiful
I applaud you for using Osage Orange. I make staffs h canes & this is my preferred medium. A shame you didn't have a more Orange heart wood. It is really beautiful.
Thanks very much! 🐢 Ah, so the heartwood is even more intense in colour?! cool
I liked the handle, it makes it look oriental
Dude, I want that skull bottle. Way cool ✌️😎
Excellent work. That is a nice trick with the clamp and vise. I need to remember that one. Cheers!

Nice finish well done.
Thank you! 🤩🐢
U proved that old is gold
Instead of doing homework, I now watch these restoration videos.
But homework is also important! As a little break you can of course watch it😅😅
That handle came out really pretty 😍
Thank you! 🐢
But it looks uncomfortable after all it is a literal block
holy wow that death liquid really did its job well
The blade restoration was top notch. However, in my opinion, the handle was absolutely horrendous.
Great Job Bud, even with all that Slow motion effects.....
Please round off that handle.
Не знаю почему кому то там не нравится рукоять … ведь вся работа выполнена просто отлично .🔥

Thanks very much! 🐢
The blade came up remarkably well considering how pitted and rusty it was. I agree that the handle looks a little unrefined.
Very nice yes 👍 great finished project.
Love the new handle. A lot of time spent polishing up that blade I bet.
Thank you for your great comment! Yes, polishing can take a few hours, but it's worth it ...🤗😊
@@ForgottenShineRestoration I know right.
15:10 HEY BRO WTF ARE YOU DOING? Great work with the knife bro
CHONKY handle, I love it. Really great work!
Thank you very much! 🤗🐢
A mahogany or rosewood polish on the handle would have contrasted very well with the brass.
You may have saved some brass by only including the outer visible portion on the second plates from each end.
Great job!
