Oliver the Opel Kadett is arguably the most famous Top Gear car ever and has been a staple of Richard Hammond’s garage for years. In a new twist to his story, Richard Hammond has purchased another car, another Opel, classed as Oliver’s girlfriend. Say hello to Olivia!

When will...forget it! I'm done with asking. Someone needs to come out and say this will never be available in North America. 😒
Will you please PLEASE let us watch Hammonds workshop in the USA? Out of 2.5 million subscribers I'm betting less then half are in the UK but you tell everyone in every video to click this link and watch your show but we can't. I see many more comments like mine asking for the show what's the hold up and reason we can't watch it?
small v8 ;)
Olivers boyfriend. But that's ok. Continue...
leave both as they were when new, they are so rare to see, buy one that have to be enterely rebuilt and put a LSX in it
I think the original blue would go very well with Oliver's soft yellow. It would be cool to have Olivia in a period correct rally spec, next to bone-stock Oliver.
My thoughts exactly it’d be brilliant
Exactly! No V8s or coilovers, but a proper period accurate rally spec, with a clean baby blue exterior.
Yep, I'm with you on that.
Yes 100%. I'd also like to see himself, his daughter or his Scottish friend enter it into an amateur rally race. That'd be so cool.
I second that emotion! period correct rally car.
It's been said a hundred times already, but yes to the original blue, and yes to a (tastefully done and era-correct) rally-spec build!
Now we're talking!
I'd like to see an era-correct rally spec car, but with some of the more modern (safety) tech such as modern, slightly wider tyres, suspension and so on.
Blue with small block
It will be so cool to see Olivia as a tiny rally car, driven by Izzy and Richard on some rally stage
We like this idea...👏
As long as mom approves I am assuming because well, you know......@@Drivetribe
This has merit.
Paint it the original pastel blue, it would go nicely with Oliver’s pale yellow. As for the engine choice you could do kind of a classic mini set up. Give it larger carb jets, port&polish the head. Nothing crazy, just old school tricks
Once Olivia is finished, you should definitely do a “wedding” and drive Olivia down an aisle. Bring some other Opels or classic cars to fill out a small field, put a normal wedding veil on Olivia’s roof, make it a sort of publicity event. I’m sure people would love it!
yes , if you're fourteen and think this is an episode of the movie Cars..WTH ??
@@kasmanien Look, it's not about being Cars or whatever. It's about doing a goofy publicity event.
@@kasmanien I'm 52 and I absolutely love the idea of a car "wedding".
@@kasmanien oh come on it's just for giggles lol
Coming from a 13 year old guy, that is the cutest idea I have ever heard of
Richard and Oliver are all that keep me believing in true love.
Same ❤
And now it's a love triangle
Would be nice if their first offspring was a lowered V8 wild child.
True, about the V8, or even Buick V6 Turbo (Grand National).
But first an flashy outfit -colour, for the lady Oliver (Olivia)
Porsche have a nice Yellow too. I will try to find it.
Well that and my love for Dinosaurs
Trust me, I'm as surprised as everyone
I think I big reason why a lot of us wanted Oliver kept standard was because he’s not just an Opel Kadett A, he’s Oliver (he crossed the Makadikadi, and was almost drowned in a river). To change Oliver would be to lose some of that. Olivia, to put it a little harsh, is just an Opel Kadett A, so I think a rally build, or small block V8, or whatever I think should very much so be on the cards
I would be more on board with your idea of modifying the heck out of Olivia if the car was a total rust bucket (or "shed" as I think Richard calls it).
I'd just freshen up the paint, and let her be Oliver's girlfriend...provided Richard doesn't get jealous!!! 😁
Olivia´s story is still to be written....
@@moosecat that’s fair. It does seem like a nice car (I feel there’s something about Hammond getting it out of his system though, and I’d rather Olivia be modified than Oliver)
@@idknils2920 true. That story could be written as a modified car though
@@moosecat I mean tbh I think something quite cool but respectful of the car would be the best course of action (like the historic rally car idea a lot of people seem to be championing). A small block V8 does seem like it would be a bit much to me. There is, of course, the very strong argument for keeping the car standard which I totally understand
The original blue would compliment Oliver's yellow very well. And as Oliver is standard a rally build would be epic!
Botswana by birth here, but now very far from home 🇨🇦. I have the fondest memories of these little guys… both my mother and grandmother had matching ones (olive green). I am therefore so happy to see an African companion to Oliver. Olivia, standard and in pale blue, gets my vote.
While I do agree that dropping in the biggest baddest engine that will fit into it is an exciting proposition, I think a rally sport, forced induction 3 or 4-cylinder engine would be the bee's knees! You've got yourself a wonderful pair of Opel there, Mr. Hammond. I trust that you will do something very fun with the lovely couple.
I’m heavily biased in favor of the small block myself. But as a Corvette guy that’s nothing new.
It’s the Kalashnikov of the internal combustion world. Abundant, durable, cheap, powerful, elegant, simple, easy to fix and even easier to modify. Not to mention small and lightweight.
The Botswana episode is still one of my absolute favorite TG episode ever.... and Oliver is no small reason for it.... who will ever forget Hammond screams "OLIIIIIIIIVER!!!!" at least a thousand times during the one hour.... epic!!!
"All by myself."
"So sad. So sad, it's a sad sad situation." 😅😅😅
for real oliver is a hero and an icon and Oliver is a perfect match
I'd go for the original blue, BUT put the Rally stuff from the Opel kits from back in the time incl. maybe either the 1600/1700 or even a double Solex 1900 cih in it.
I was going to suggest CIH too. Not very fancy engine either, but can make at least noticeable power in a lightweight body compared to the original pushrod "small block".
Double Solex would be mean and I'd love to see that.
Opel GT engine
Hammond and his daughter could go for a drive in these cars. Could be awesome to see.
I like the idea of a v8. Keep Oliver stock and go wild with Olivia.
Bring her back to original condition, please!
Greetings from Bochum, Germany.
Birthplace of Oliver and Olivia. ❤
Advice for Richard- Olivia should be painted back to pale blue (I want to see her and Oliver in their factory colours) and the engine should be replaced with the engine to be in line with a 1962 rally car such as the Straight 6 out of the Austin Healy 3000 MKII (no external modifications though apart from necessary changes)
Definitely the blue for my vote - the red is a bit harsh on such a delicate body - though opinions on colours are entirely subjective - really fun idea to have him and ‘er together😊
Absolutely love Oliver, and I'd love to see Olivia restored to original. Their love story is too adorable to muck around with! Great video!
I know that a lot of the 70s opels have had rover 3.5 v8s swapped into them since they weigh just a little bit more than the opel 4cyl CIH engines. The thing with almost every 4cyl rwd opel is that they tend to get REALLY front heavy with bigger engines (especially kadetts), so if you decide to go for a v8, I would definitely go for an aluminum block one to keep the weight down.
You did what we all wanted with Oliver. Follow your heart with Olivia! I would love to see what you create left to your own devices. Speaking of, could you PLEASE make Your TV show available to us in the US!!! I have tried all sorts of things to try to watch it. Richard Hammond s Workshop needs to be seen in the US!!
Oliver has always had a very special place in my heart due to the fact that it is identical to the one my grandmother had as her first car. 1962 same colour also went to Joburg. Mis her dearly so happy to see he has gotten a new friend. Id say the most i would do kn Olivia is slight restomod. Nice high revving naturally aspirated engine and some better suspension.
They might even be the same car
@@sambarker7930 we have had the same thought many times, but unfortunately in those days registration changed and there were no record's, so we have no way of knowing. The Botswana special is also the only top gear episode we ever watched together
I think that original blue would fit very well.
Also like the idea of @Yvolve of the time-period correct rally spec.
Outside of changing it back to blue, I say do whatever you want! A pro-touring Kadet with a small block would be pretty rad.
Friendship ended with old Oliver, new Oliver is new best friend
Richard, I am overjoyed, excited, and pleased that you found Olivia ...Oliver's Girlfriend... As a Rally Driver, a Rally Car Kadett would be awesome. I agree on the Pale Polar Blue, a Porsche Horizon or Meissen Blue would even look great... If you do retrofit a small block, be sure to keep it light. A V8 equivalent to the Opel's engine is the 215 Rover 3.5 L OHV V8... The LT2 or LS1 Corvette, the 283 and Ford 289... As for exotics the Opel 3000 RWD 3.6 liter I-6 might be easier to retrofit than a newer FWD Opel version... The Jaguar Daimler AJ26 4.0 SC V8, and the Jaguar XJ6 AJ16 4.0 liter I-6 is another idea... Make sure you keep its stock engine preserved in storage... I love watching Your videos...Richard in all that you say, think and do, You are the UK equivalent to My Norwegian Father and I admire You very much... Michael of Tulsa .. Much Love 😁👍💯🇬🇧🇳🇴🤗💜💜💜
Always a treat to see Oliver. And now he has a partner!
A girlfriend. Please don't force the term "partner" on everyone and every thing. "Partners" are people you have business arrangements with and do non-romantic things with. Richard even called her his girlfriend.
Also, its not a human, so it can't have romantic feelings. Please stop forcing anthropomorphic concepts onto innocent cars - it's weird.
Clarkson and May laughed at Hammond for naming his car, and now you are creating a lineage of named cars.
People like this are why we have people walking around as dogs, foxes, dragons and pretending that people can fall in love with people that their parents didnt arrange their marriage to, and its causing the downfall of society.
/Sarcasm, in case it wasnt obvious. Words have malleable meanings, even if we don't like change. I dont hear anyone speaking Old English or Norman French here.
Fantastic, my very first car was a "1967 Opel kadet", this brings back so many amazing memories and people I have not thought about for decades, Thank You.
as a 1967 space cadet, I have to admit to a deep fondness for Oliver, as well.
I'd be intrigued to see it being put back to its original colour, or as close as you can get it to, and then get it to be like it came out of the factory in 1962. Love the Kadett and the common-man, yet luxurious appeal to it
I can’t be the only one that let out an audible “Dawwww” when Hammond introduced Olivia, no?
I want to see a whole fleet of fully restored Opal Cadets. Buy the whole Oliver family and curate the biggest collection in the world!
The rallycar Oliver pair sounds amazing! Really could be a display of how versatile older car platforms can be
Awwww! Oliver has a girlfriend now! ❤
Keep her in the original red, and leave the engine standard. You don’t touch a classic.
Sad to hear that the Grand Tour is ending, but I’m glad that Richard and the rest of the guys are still having fun, and that they’re still willing to entertain/educate us even after all these years.
red isn't original
lol thats the point the red isnt the original colour, 🤦♂blue was, so best to keep original to the car from factory and it would work much better with olivers light yellow.
I saw this on Richard Hammonds Workshop, i cant wait to see more of Olivia
I would either go with a period correct rally spec or a mild resto-mod. By that I mean rather than going the whole way with the V8 (which would be interesting to see), perhaps a more modern Corsa engine and gearbox as an example. I like the scarlet colour, but the blue does sound like a lovely colour for it.
My first inclination was a powertrain swap and suspension upgrades but then I saw them tooling around the track together and I think she should remain standard like Oliver, makes for a fantastic matched set and they'd be a blast to tool around in together.
Return it to its original blue colour, it would probably go much better with Oliver's colour. I think it would be a brilliant base for a period correct little rally car. Or at least something inspired by '60s rally cars. Personally I'd keep the engine from the Opel family. I'm sure there has to be a 1.9 litre Opel cam-in-head engine sitting around somewhere that can be tuned for rally. Used to be common on Opels and Vauxhalls, of course. It was even used on the 2nd series Opel Kadett Rallye Sprint of the late '60s. So a bit after Olivia's time, but still of the era.
I'll echo a lot of other comments I see already - Oliver is unique, so keeping him as-is was special. Olivia is an opportunity to really have some fun. I think the original colour would look much nicer, and then perhaps that bigger/beefier engine and drive train would be a neat direction to go. All the more amusing that Oliver would have a very muscular girlfriend!
Yes! Small block baby!
It’s the Kalashnikov of the internal combustion world. Abundant, durable, cheap, powerful, elegant, simple, easy to fix and even easier to modify. Not to mention small and lightweight.
I think personally a period rally spec, in the pale blue is the money shot. It would look crisp.
Kudos to whoever made the final montage!
I absolutely adore this! I tend to have multiples of the same car. I like Jekle and Hyde stuff. One original or original type and one a little hot. However 2 cute original Opels is just adorable. If you really feel so inclined yes make one a little spicey but tasteful.
This is everything the world has ever needed
Right??!
In that colour it would be really cool to turn it into a sleeper car!
I think leave it standard for both, Oliver was so iconic and a beautiful little car so having Olivia with him will be perfect
I love how top gear became Voldemort for the guys, none of them would utter the name
I think just paint it back to the original pale pastel blue, it would match up to Oliver so well.
Keep the red it looks absolutely ace! And is a very happy contrasting Pop with Olivers more muted tone. They compliment eachother very well. Also, I really wish cars were still built with this level of engineering simplicity. That engine looks like something even I could take apart and put back together.
As tempting as it is to put a V-8 in it I think the Ecotec turbo 4 from a 2008 or so Opel GT would be a lot easier to accomplish and it's 260 hp is about as much as that chassis could handle, both performance and weight-wise.
@solracer66 -- I'm with you on that build. I believe the same drivetrain was also used in the Pontiac Solstice GXP and the Saturn Sky Red Line.
I agree, should look more towards specific output rather than a large engine. I'd have a strong preference for a motorcycle engine, with similar numbers.
@@sheldonaubut And the Daewoo G2X as well. I had a Solstice GXP Z0K for about 8 years and loved it. The engine was fantastic, powerful yet I got up to 34 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.
Whatever you decide to do, leave the engine in ! Thats her soul, her sound , her power...her ❤️❤️
Its only national treasures that we are reluctant to see you mod. They are beloved characters. Olivia is new to the party. Mod her to your hearts content. She can be Oliver's cross fit, UFC, body builder girlfriend.
Leave Olivia stock and take it back to light blue/white. Then find (if you can) the trim pieces for Oliver so he feels complete.
Red looks fine. IF you are going to drop a V8 in it, (which would be cool) don't bother painting it blue. Olivia can be the tinkerer you wanted to do with Oliver. Oliver can be your original restored 1st. And you can make Olivia the modified play thing.
OLIVER: is a warrior & earned his scars..
OLIVIA: is a princess and should be treated as such..
give her all the love
Lovely addition to the fleet!
It’s still a beloved episode
V8 rally car 100%!
Edit: I think a racing livery that pays homage to the car's original colour would be sweet.
A (Romantic) Road trip with Oliver and Olivia through Botswana that sounds like a great idea to me 😂😂😂
hammond in oliver, mindy in olivia, be like another honeymoon for them ! :D
😂
I like the idea of Olivia being turned into a real racing machine. That way, it's a bit like in chess where Oliver would be the king and Olivia the queen
Yes! Small block baby! I vote small block!
It’s the Kalashnikov of the internal combustion world. Abundant, durable, cheap, powerful, elegant, simple, easy to fix and even easier to modify. Not to mention small and lightweight.
Love the idea of Olivia being blue with cream seats (just opposite to Oliver) and rally spec!
Bring this one back to absolute stock, then buy a THIRD cadet and go crazy with the third one. Nostalgia, history, automotive insanity, all three bases covered.
the lary teenage child, yob ? :D
The more the merrier!
Make Olivia the mad girlfriend that Oliver needs put in the V8!!!!
Hey Richard, for me, I wouldn't modify the car at all because as time goes by there will be fewer and fewer examples left in original condition and it's already old. I would also finish it in it's original color. To have two original 1962 Opel Kadetts would be nice...
I must of lived under a rock my whole life because I didn’t even know this channel existed until now and I’m glad to be here
Oliver just makes me smile. Happy he's finally found the right one. lol
Nice to know u kept one the cars u did on old top gear
Olivia is the one you have fun with, Oliver stays pristine. Drop the small block V8 in Olivia.
Original blue with white interior. Super clean original but with a bit of resto mod packed in too.
Love story of the century: Oliver and Olivia.
I used to work with a guy who had an Opel Kaddet with a 454BBC in it. The thing was all engine and rear tires. Yes, you did sit in the back seat.
I'd argue for going back to the original blue. If you kept the red, then the black top would have to be painted to match, which would be very difficult. As for Oliver, those missing bits of trim CAN be found, ya know.
I think Olivia as a sleeper would be amazing, Back to the original blue but paired with a small block! The blue would look so incredible against Oliver's pale yellow. The little dynamic duo
The smallest cogs, as it were. I'm comfortable saying that since Richard plays at it himself.
As others have said, the factory blue, but in a period rally spec. Then you and Izzy can run some rallies in it, with her behind the helm.
Anything posted with Richard and Oliver. I click it!
I think Paint her the original blue. Lovely idea. Enjoying watching Drivetribe and Richard!!
Oliver inspired me to get an Opel Kadett as my first car. I couldn't find an A model so I ended up with a 1971 Kadett B, which have served me faithfully for over 10 years now.
Back to original colour but some sympathetic engine mods and upgrades. What a peach !👌
Rally and Red. Every quiet, reserved man needs a fiery redhead at his side
Those 1.0-litre OHV motors can be built up to fly! For a 3-bearing crank they can rev to 8500 RPM AND make power at that point when properly built.
There's a 1962 Kadet Cabrio right around the corner here.
But you need another one to fill in all the rust holes.
Back to blue! And leave it stock like Oliver! The two of them are going to have a wonderful relationship together.
I think you should do to Olivia what you wanted to do to Oliver. Put a V8 in it, uprate the suspension, braking, chassis bracing, the works, but return it to its original pale blue colour.
That would be a fantastic pair of contrasting cars then, you can have the V8 powered Kadett, without the guilt of doing it to Oliver, and you have the storage space to keep all the original bits in a crate for future in case you want them. :)
Can’t wait for Oliver and Olivia to make little car babies
I would love the original blue color, with some soft engine modifications! 😎👍👍👍
Engine.Running gear.Rollcage,harness’s ….obviously.
Refresh the red and black, and Hillclimb it!Oliver is meant to be standard,Olivia needs this!
Honestly the red is lovely and sporty especially I with those wheels Is just a hint of a future smallblock V8 under that bonnet (and probably most the firewall)
I think leaving it as it is, is perfect. Think the red goes well with Oliver colour because if it was blue it would stand out more then blending in beautifully.
Keep it stock, and light blue sounds fenomenal next to Oliver ;)
Anything you do to these Opals is going to be perfect, as they are your's to do with as you please. we will watch. Nice find BTW .
Don't get me wrong, I get the idea of modifying it to a rally stile car, but a car like this is a gem, I think you should restor it to its original glory, including it's blue color
V8, Straight pipe, big rubbers at the back! Job done
Maybe get it back to blue. The stock colour, with both of them reunited, would be amazing!
Keep it red it’s part of her story and the big block v8 sounds like a great idea. Oliver has sentimental value but Olivia should get everything you couldn’t bring yourself to do to Oliver
Behind every successful Oliver is a strong and powerful Olivia. Let's go mental!
Scarlet. Top top line restoration. No other done better. Oliver deserves the best.
I like the idea of painting it its original color. I feel it would pair well with Oliver
Can't believe I'm saying this but pastile pink. Apart from that original condition restoration
My wife and I are big American fans.....
Great to see Oliver get his own lady friend....Olivia...PERFECT.
Leave her alone...as she is/was....no mods Hammond....for goodness sake man.
You knew it.....
God's love to you...Much love.
You could see Oliver parked next to other famous film and TV cars, and it wouldnt just fit in, it would still be a special one. Imagine seeing a Batmobile, the ecto1 from ghost busters, the mystery machine, KITT, the car from Supernatural, Oliver, and the DeLorean from back to the future all lined up.
Id be most excited to have seen Oliver.
Years ago, at an Opel press event, I had the opportunity to drive Kadetts A, B and C all back to back. I grew up with these things all around me, but I'd never driven one. Let's just say that despite the C-model being a fastback GT/E, I enjoyed the cheap-and-cheerful A-model the most. All of them were in prime condition but still quite horrible to drive, TBH. But the A-model in particular really put a smile on my face due to its personality. I totally understand why RH named his "Oliver" - it's such a fitting name for that car. Another thing I remember from that day is how these cars reminded me how restrictive the view out of modern cars is compared to these old girls from the 50s, 60s and 70s. We were there to drive the then current Astra OPC/VXR and that car felt like you were driving around almost blind when compared to the old models.
