@@batmanismexican1873 Iberian Peninsula was governed by many kingdoms. Spain did not really exist. And the Moors were on the way out long before 1492. And it was not like "Spain" was conquered one day and free the next ?

@@taketimeout2share That is simply not true. Argentina was one of the 2 or 3 richest countries in the world in 1900. Cuba was richer than Italy when Castro came to power. Angola was richer than Portugal in GDP per person when it got its indepencance in 1975. Other Spanish colonies such as the Netherlands and Belgium are very rich.

@Rap Star While they did begin the transatlantic slave trade, they did indeed buy those slaves from West African kingdoms, although there were some examples of Portuguese slavers raiding inland to capture slaves. Calling those people "black Africans" is such a huge generalization as they did not see themselves as "black Africans", they saw themselves as Igbos, Fulanis, Hausas etc. Those who were sold to European slave traders were mostly prisoners of war, captured in local conflicts. It's like saying Europeans sold their fellow Europeans into slavery when you really mean Romans enslaved Gauls or Germans.

Not only do you not learn about Spanish history in U.S. schools . But you never hear how Spain (Along with France) played a major part in the American revolution ? In fact you never hear about George Washington Spanish friend Juan De Miralles who was sent from Spanish King Carlos III to Washington to help in the American revolution ! Another tid bit the $ sign originally with two lines. Comes from the Spanish abbreviation for peso and the pillars of Hercules that you see on the Spanish flag. And Spanish currency was also legal U.S currency until 1857
In addition to that and the campaign of the Spanish army commanded by Fernando de Galvez, there is another event of great importance for the American war of independence that is not known today in the USA: the capture of the double British convoy by the Spanish-French Navy on 9 August 1780, the greatest single-day logistical disaster for the Royal Navy in its entire history. The fleet under the command of the Spanish admiral Luis de Córdova y Córdova managed to seize 52 of the 55 armed merchant ships of the convoy, successfully taking them to the port of Cádiz. Of the 55 armed merchants, six belonged to the Western Indian Company and were heading to India. The others were heading to reinforce the royal army in the USA. The list of goods they carried includes: 80,000 muskets, 294 cannons, 3,000 barrels of gunpowder, uniforms for twelve infantry regiments, naval equipment for the maintenance of the Royal Navy ships in America, a million pounds sterling in gold, etc. . The blow to the English war effort in the war of independence must have been very important, but they will not teach American children in school either. Weird, I did, and to your point, everything cannot be encompassed within a finite amount of time. Merely, the basics of history as is pertinent to being basically informed about major world events relevant towards contemporary understanding of societal circumstance.
@@stuartdodson6630 I totally agree with you, however keep in mind that the French and La Fayette are mentioned in schools. With the same effort and without hardly extending the lesson, they should also mention Spain and Bernardo de Galvez. That would go a long way toward overcoming the racism toward Hispanics that still persists in society, and would give Hispanic children a source of self-esteem and pride for their lives.

Having grown up mostly in various colonial outposts of the decaying British Empire, I'm surprisingly ill-educated on matters of Spanish history. As I often joke, "History is written by the British", and so we're not taught much in school about the huge world dominating empire that came before their particular world dominating empire, and good books on it are harder to find than I imagine they are in he USA any other country that Spain had more presence in historically. So I'm eternally grateful for your videos on Spain - now back to the video, Plus Ultra and all that.

How old are you? 200?
I grew up in Puerto Rico, went to a private catholic school where history teaching was from Spanish perspective. I don’t know if that was the case for public schools. We learned our modern Spanish history and grew up proud of it. Now I live in mainland USA and see the history my children are learning is from Anglo perspective. I often feel trapped between two different worlds when it comes to historical perspective.
I'm in the US and in public schools they spent a lot of time teaching about the Spanish empire. I always hear about what wasn't taught and wonder if people do not pay attention in class. Maybe these people are not even from the states and are just talking shit.
Happy to hear you had some Spanish history attending school in the USA. I’ve never been to school in mainland USA. I have a 15 year old and a 9 year old growing up in the mainland, I have not seen any Spanish history on their learning material that comes home. Neither want to learn to speak Spanish, when I talk to them in Spanish they reply in English. I end up talking to them in English and so they are not learning to speak Spanish. That is my own fault, sadly.

The British had colonies while Spain when it gets new territories, it becomes part of Spain not just a colony.

They had no Empire in the Americas, matthew Renstall confirms this. It was more like the HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE & Catholic Church in Mexico (Charles V). If you read Maximilian of Hapsburgs journals, he mentions that he is returning to the lands of his fathers and return Mexico to its former glory when it was under Hapsburg- HRE rule. He never mentioned Castille or Extramdura. It was also a lot of TLAXCALANS who expanded into Texas and California. Most of the manilla galleon crew was Mayan and Nahuatl, hence why CHAVUCANO-Philipines has more Nahautl in its langauge.

The Reconquista really fascinates me, the discovery and incredible conquests of the New World. And Especially during the Great Siege of Malta 1565 apart from the few volunteers and mercenaries, no country gave us help, Only the Spanish Empire sent much needed reinforcements and supplies, and helped us win the siege. Yes, Spain spent tons of gold keeping the Ottomans off the Mediterranean shores without any economic interest. In the case of Malta, when the holy league was planning the attack on the Ottoman army in Lepanto, the Knights of Malta were willing to follow the orders of the Spanish crown, but the Pope claimed that they were a religious order, so he had to power over them. I guess they knew who the most powerful man in the league was. Regards!
The American historian John Elliot, in his work "Empires of the Atlantic" claims that when the British started building their own colonial empire in the 17th century, they looked at Spain for ideas and methods to run a global transatlantic empire. During the reign of Philip II, Spain was able to build a complex administrative machinery that allowed it to govern its huge empire in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa. It is false that the Spanish empire was ill administered, as some Anglo-Saxon TH-camrs and bloggers claim. For 4 centuries Spain was able to keep together much of its empire, in a time where communications across the Atlantic and the Pacific could take several months. The Spanish Crown created an effective system to prevent, detect, investigate and punish abuses of power on the American native populations at the hands of the viceroys, governors and Spanish settlers. The native Indians were more protected under Spanish rule than under local independent governments. As all human constructions, the Spanish empire had its lights and its shadows, no different than other empires throughout human history. Anglo-Saxon historians interested in the history of the Spanish empire need to approach it objectively without prejudices inherited from the Black Legend. I think this series of videos on the Spanish empire are a good attempt to summarize and explain more than 500 years of history.
Agreed except for native Indians, it's native Americans. In the Spanish speaking American countries the populations of unmixed Americans number in the hundreds of millions completely the opposite of what happened in the Anglo world were the native Americans were murdered by genocide to take over the land and completely supplant the native American populations with exclusive European populations.
Yes. And the Laws of Burgos, of 1512!, for native Americans were more progressive than USA, Canadian and Australian laws for natives until the XXth century. One correction: John H. Elliott was an English historian.
The Black Legend is a legend in itself, a poor attempt at hiding the realities of the Spanish empire. It's easy to rule an empire when 9/10 of the land's former inhabitants have died and the rest are your slaves. The real tragedy of the Spanish empire is, however, that the only thing it created was lots of gold-stuffed churches in Spain and lots of dead people in Europe and America.

They made alliances with other Native tribes that hated the native empire.
Like 95% or so of Cotez's army consisted of native allies. Same with the Incas, they already were fighting a civil war, the spanish just took a side, intermarry with their allies nobility, called the natives Kings gobernadores, or cabilderos or whatever, pour some water over their heads (this was considered of the utmost importance) and voilà, you've got yourself an empire.

It astounds me how someone can get their head around all these details. And then present them so clearly.
For a video called "the Spanish Empire" it sure barely mentioned the empire (outside of Europe). I guess this makes sense in the context of a series on the history of Spain but would have been cool to actually add how the Empire worked, the trans pacific trade, how the Empire was administered, etc. since technically these was place WERE Spain at one point.
I can't believe that "Plus ultra" came from Spain. I can never look at My Hero Academia the same again.

Very good video. By the way, "Plus Ultra" is not correcty translated in the video: at the beganing it was "Non Plus Ultra" (on the Hercules columns of Gibraltar strait), meaning that that is the end of the known world and "nothing else exist beyond this point". After discovering the new world in 1492, it was changed by "Plus Ultra", meaning that "a beyond exist".
No mention of the disaster that was the English Armada
Sadly no.. so many ppl don't know about it, how the English were humiliated one year after the Spanish armada had failed. School systems around the world don't/ wont teach it cuz I guess it's forbidden to speak about their atrocious, hilarious defeats.
You forget the Disaster of the English army in Spain in response to the attack of the Invincible army, this defeat brought a great crisis to the English Empire that would end in the Oliver Cromwell Revolution, it is also important to remember the crushing defeat of Vernon in Cartagena de Indias ( present Colombia) and in Buenos Aires (present Argentina)

England / UK never had an empire in Europe. Napoleon's French empire lasted 15 years. Nazi Germany lasted 5 years of war. The Spanish were in Italy for more than 480 years. In the Flandes 200 years. In parts of France and Germany 160 years. In Athens 90 years. In Portugal 60 years.
Spain's goal in Europe was to save Catholicism. That is why there are 200 million Catholics in Central Europe and Italy. Italy was filled with universities, infrastructures, fortresses, Baroque cities, Spanish churches and palaces.

Though remembered for his physical features and impotency, Charles II’s reign acted as a precedent to the reforms of Charles III. For more than a century and a half, inflation and debt had increased and population declined. He inherited the throne in a difficult time but by the 1680s, monetary reforms ended the instability and population began a slow recovery.

It’s not that underrated, it might be if you live in the UK or any of the former British colonies, but not in former Spanish colonies which are mostly found in Latin America with the exception of Equatorial Guinea in Africa, we’re taught most of that in schools.
@@Jean-vp1yr Well, that will be in a few schools but in most schools in Latin America they do not teach anything about the achievements of the Spanish empire, they only teach pure black legends.

Wonderful documentary sir! Great quality and details on one of my favorite nation in Europe. Can you make a video about history of China in the future? It’s long and may need 2-3 part or any dynasty you like. It might be boring because there’s lots of infighting but it’s also the craziest place to live at the time.

Fascinating how the influx of all that silver caused inflation. And eventually disrupted the economy! Pieces of 8! And the size of The Spanish empire was amazing!
Inflation was not the main problem, although it was a problem, of course. Spain reinvested 70% of America's wealth (80% in the 18th century), in America and the Philippines, to create a Western society: 2,000 stone cities, 28 universities, 25 colleges, thousands of hospitals and nursery schools, 130 cathedrals, 250 fortresses, bridges, ports, roads... 90% of Hispanic America speaks Spanish as their mother tongue. 99% speak Spanish. 85% Catholic. UK and Holland got rich. Spain no. But the Commonwealth is 10% native English speakers (in growing competition with China and India this century), less than 10% Christian. The United States was instrumental in saving the British legacy after WW2, as a second language, reintroduced. Spain spent almost the other 20-30% of the wealth on our NATO in Italy of 457 years, which filled Italy with universities, palaces, ports, baroque cities, controlling the Mediterranean... and in Europe's wars of religion, to save the Catholic religion and the legacy of Rome, in Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, France, Italy, South Germany, Palatinate, the Czech Republic, Austria... Wars of 1500-1700.
Those were the two objectives of Spain. Hispanization-Romanization, and saving religion in Europe. With that double spending, which no empire had, inflation and bankruptcies were inevitable. Spain had 8 million inhabitants, and our enemies 60 million.
