First time I've seen this specific lesson on THE BLUES SCALE and I find that since I grew up playing the mid and upper portion of my diatonic in first position, that I don't always hit the draw bends clearly. I like the metronome because it forces me to give equal time and attention to each note, whether a draw or draw bend or simple blow. Thanks for showing me that. Ken Jacklin

That is me I am able to at this moment 3days in and can only do the 6 draw descending. But still striving to do the back and forth, Because there is so much music in there! I love this little instrument,
This is a very helpful topic for me as I'm starting out. I am familiar with the blues scale from my days playing jazz trumpet. I know that mastering it here will give me a great foundation for playing blues harmonica

Ok I'm getting a little worried now. I knew this would happen... I switched things around...before I would just bend when I felt like bending was what I wanted, and it worked well. I didn't even know it was called bending. Now I can barely bend- because I'm thinking about it. Same same thing with blowing and drawing. I hope it gets easier, more natural with practice.
Hi, thank you for some great content here on TH-cam.. I have question though.. Is for example the blues scale the same on the C harmonica and a A harmonica? The same goes for the pentatonic scale? Or do i have to learn a new pattern every time?
You do not need to learn a different pattern. The intervals between note to note are the same no matter which key harmonica you are paying. So yes the scale is the same, but just in a different key.
Question: if the 3 blow and 2 draw both create the same G, why use the 2 draw when you can start with a 3 blow? Wouldn’t it still create the same scale?

Hi Bruce - it is definitely strange that the "blues harmonica" needs coaxing to get those extra notes but I think the foibles are what make the instrument interesting. :-)
It only became a "blues harmonica" because back in the day people found out about those hidden notes. The harmonica wasn't designed to be bluesy, it was an accident because those hidden notes turned out to have an awesome sound to them

Great lesson man, and like you said essential. For some reason when I first learned this scale I could only play it coming down from the +6.

Most important tip was certainly to get a metronome because it's not so obvious.

yes it is strange, and this the what makes harmonica a charming instrument.
How do I know or find out that my bend is only half step.
Just figured out to bend but don't have the fine tuning
Practice. It's all done by ear
2draw is the same as 3blow
show us 4th too,, and what you can manage from 1st, since its a pain to play..
+Pspisripoff excellent suggestion buddy - I don't actually use 4th much but I do use 1st :-)

The blues scale is actually the minor pentatonic scale with an added "blue" flat 5. Why do you say that these are not the same?
They're not the same, one of them has a flat five and one doesn't.

Or just use a base instead of metronome, way less boring, and if you do it enough you can skip the teacher.
