Not sure Brent was an underdog - he was clearly elevated well above where he should have been to a probably well paid management position that he was fairly terrible at.
The British imagine that they love the underdog, because that's how they see themselves. But try being the underdog in the UK and you will quickly realise why so many are lonely and medicated.
@@BroskiRIP "Original" 2001 Version was made in UK. US version started in 2005, after the first season the US version started to take off and became great!
This scenes capture why The Office is my favorite show since first time I was watching it - really funny, entertaining, laughter.. and suddenly, this total silence in the room when David COMPLETELY turned around begging for his job with tears in his eyes. Made me cry... gets me EVERY time!!!!
Such perfect pathos. I've been watched quite a bit of the US version of the 'Office'. I like it, but this reached seminal peaks that can't possibly be matched by any remake in my opinion. The acting is beautiful in the redundancy scene. I have no idea how Ricky manges to convey such a flawed pathetic character but at the same time have the viewer (well me anyway!) hurting for him. The writing and observations of the nuances of life are incredible.
Ricky Gervais is a brilliant actor, you do not realize this till it gets serious, like this, but then you also realize all the cringe is just brilliant acting too.
Yes! It happens alot. There are no small actors, just small parts. Look at Allison Janey, before she did The West Wing or even Mom, she had a recurring role as a Maid named Ginger on Guiding Light. On America Soil she won an Oscar, Emmy (TV) Golden Globe (TV) and none of her Guiding Light Alumni achieved that.

David Brent is refreshingly laid back for a man with such responsibility.

Please dont make me redundant....how wonderfully acted was that tension in the room.
“What her?” 😂
I had forgotten that Olivia Colman was in this episode. She is such a great actress who has achieved so much more subsequently
So did I. Loved her in the crown.
The acting skills are superb. How can in one scene can David Brent be such a knob and then in another you’re crying for him..
The Office really was a break through in UK comedy. We truly love the underdog and Brent embodies that persona!!

Brent was not an underdog, he was full of self importance and so lacking in self awareness, that he truly believed that he was doing a good job
UK 🇬🇧 version of The Office best show ever made!
You know I like Gervais in this show, but only acting. Those 30 seconds at the 5 minute mark were moving.
There is not a UK version. It was orginal from UK then they made a US version of it.
@@RandySnarsh The US version wasn't as funny as the UK one back years ago!

Just wonderful acting at the end by Dave, tearfully asking not to be made redundant.
This will still be as funny in 50 years time.
In 2 centuries time. People will be at a HR management course, forced to watch episodes of the Office for the pleasure and experience in the future.
A good idea is a good idea for life!
I personally think that almost everything that R. Gervais has done as a writer and subsequently actor blows his stand-up work out of the water.

What a brilliant cast.
