Spot on.

I once had a boss like Brent. Same hair, same beard, same age, always arsing around, cracking jokes and trying to be funny. He even said he was more of an entertainer than a boss. This was about a year before The Office came out. When it did and all his staff were laughing at him, he failed to see the connection.
I bet he was great to work with 👍
Loads of familiar people in that show
Is that you Tim? Timbo? Timbeeer?!
They won awards. Not overlooked.
@@WillScarlet1991they're certainly not a good boss cause they're usually wildly incompetent but they aren't close to being the worse either.
Man, Ricky's acting is incredible during when he's pleading to not be made redundant.
Yeah, that was well done
100%
You forget he's "David Brent" and start feeling for this poor guy who's about to lose everything he has. He's spent years trying to build up the identity of the cool, friendly boss and he's about to be stripped of the very thing he never knew he had.
I was laughing throughout most of this video, but started crying during that final clip. Absolutely incredible.
To be honest, he was never as good as he was here, both writing and acting.
It’s genius.
I don't know, I think afterlife, Derek, extras and life's too short are excellent shows for all different reasons. Of course this one is iconic though. @@Aurongroove
Its amazing how well this has aged. Still feels fresh, funny and relevant. Probably will in another 20 years.
The content has aged poorly, relying heavily on World War II jokes from Fawlty Towers with no apparent originality. Each joke feels overused, earning it a rating of 1 on a scale of 1 to 10, with a desire to rate it even lower if possible.
but Brent's jokes were supposed to be naff in the first place, that's the joke so the fact he's making jokes about the outdated cultural references doesn't make the actual show dated - in my opinion anyway. @@weronikaas295
I doubt it. We wont have staplers, paper, copiers, landlines, etc, but the characters, are timeless!
Cool, since this award winning popular show was so shitty, I'm looking forward to the show that you, a genius, must be working on now. Surely you have investors and studios bashing your door down to work with you and develop your brilliant projects. I can't wait!

Eh…but the WW2 and Fawlty jokes are not the joke that’s funny.
There are too many subtle bits to mention throughout the office, but the way Brent stands up prematurely and has to sit down again, along with the glance at his watch when Neil's stealing his limelight always get me in the first scene. Never gets old
Ricky does this sort of thing so well - i can't think of anyone who does this better. His anxiety and inability to react appropriately (maturely) looks so real.
Yes, how he's breathing shallow too.
When Oliver likes the joke. “Well done”
It shows his weak personality, he should have remained standing. Brent is someone who is always very insecure and looking for acceptance from others.
the look at the camera before the eric hitchmo anecdotes
Crook's delivery of "i havent got it on me, but when youre next in" was brilliant
The subtext in that part, for me, is; why does Gareth have magazines of black man’s cocks? Like this is one of those things he’s obsessed and fascinated with, like his obsession with playing Top Trumps.
"could you."😂😅
And the way he was laughing as David told Jennifer the joke…
“I’m not gay, in fact I’ve never come over a little queer”. Imagine it was for real and your boss said that in a welcoming meeting. It’d be off the scale hilarious
But at the same time, you'd be thinking, what on earth is it going to be like working for this guy?
@@VenturiLife but somewhat pleased the boss was a comedy genius
Brent’s skit was classic 😂
People seem to overlook the writing and directing genius of Stephen Merchant. Him and Ricky together were brilliant. The office is the greatest comedy ever committed to film and can never be beaten. Ricky’s acting was utterly sublime and completely unmatched by anyone.
Couldn't agree more, Merchant was such a big part of The Office and Extras. Gervais on his own doesn't really excel. I found Afterlife season 1 quite forced and from what I hear the David Brent movie wasn't that great. Merchant was obviously invaluable to the writing, he pulled Gervais back when it was necessary.
Did you not watch the video? Gervais is a bumbling idiot while Patrick Baladi is a comedy god making the office workers laugh at his casual, relaxed jokes.
I think Peep Show was better, it certainly made me laugh more. The Office was funny but it was a bit of a one joke show.

Unbelievable that having endured David Brent for all this time RG can bring us round to feel huge sympathy for him in an instant during the redundancy scene. Quite brilliant acting.
Honestly how do they not die of laughter during this literally in tears. The scene with Gareth is just phenomenal.
Took a ridiculous amount of takes, Ricky and Martin Freeman kept corpsing the entire time so much so the filming was massively behind.. Ricky would add new improvised bits in everywhere in each take and people would just lose it… would give an arm and leg to have been there must have been hilarious
Having David break the moment he shakes on his redundancy deal is one of the hallmarks of the genius of this series.
It would have been nice to have included the scene with the two people from the agency. It motivates Brent's shift from almost blasé when he first learns of his imminent redundancy (because he thinks he'll get tons of work as a motivational speaker) to utter devastation (because they've just told him they won't be using him again).
I've seen these clips so many times, yet I still cringe with embarrassment. Genius writing, superb acting, honestly there's no slackers 💯💯💯💯💯
Ricky Gervais, brilliant Actor.
Just superb writing. And the comic timing is about as good as it gets
The multiple times I've watched the Brent dance before I've never noticed Rachel bursting out laughing (at 26:54). That definitely was not supposed to happen as by that stage everyone had their horrified faces on. It's fun to see it slipped through.
Good spot, it's definitely out of character as she's back to serious face afterwards, isn't she?
Lol good catch. She was like "I can't do this..." 😂😂😂
@@ItsTerryTime Ha, I just noticed too in that shot the bald guy on the right (Jamie is his name I think) is also struggling. Very next shot his face is dead serious again.
@@Mike-me3splmao he even looks directly at the camera, with a look that says “is this serious?”
haha great spot, don't think I ever caught that! I have no idea how they made it through that scene :D
The "Whats your biggest disapointment"? "Altern Towers". That had me giggling.
Alton Towers.
You can tell Neil is loving watching the car crash of Brent telling his “jokes” 😂
When the BBC actually made content that was worth watching.
21:56 The IT dude is Matt Holness who has been in loads of stuff. He had a really funny tv show called ‘Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place,’ it’s well worth a watch if you’re into weird zany comedy. I’m sure there are clips or full episodes on TH-cam. Interesting fact, Stephen Merchant, Co creator of The Office is in it, as is Matt Berry (legend) and Richard Ayoda from the IT Crowd.

*"I don't agree with that in the workplace"*
what I find most interesting about this show is how people interpret the characters so differently. Some see Brent as self serving, ignorant, egotistical others are more sympathetic, see him as just wanting to be liked etc. Also the Neil arc is interesting, how in earlier episodes he seems quite fair, charming, but later picks at David, mocking him with Chris Finch. Was that just Neil having enough of Brent's antics or was he enjoying the fall from grace?
I don't see Lee as a bad guy either, in fact he was pretty patient around the fact Tim was after his girlfriend, I just thought he wasn't the right fit for Dawn, he was just a bloke, well meaning enough, but some make him the villain. Its pretty well done, there's no real answer, hero or villain, just a lot of grey areas. I dont think anyone was the real hero of the show personally, not even Tim who seemed to get joy from mocking a person that wasn't as socially aware or smart as he was. Just a great piece off work all round, ageless.
I haven't had this verified, but I read somewhere that Ricky and Stephen's goal was always to make Lee seem like a perfectly fine guy, but just through him being out of focus and only ever showing his reactions to Tim's advances on Dawn, it ended up with Tim looking like the obvious choice to the audience. Supposedly it was never meant to be such an easy decision.
Oh come on now.
Finchy is the clear hero of the show.
I agree, except Finch does become a villain that needs defeating for Brent’s character arc to be complete.
Neil was professional with him until he was sacked and kept coming back tot he office, he was fair game to be mocked as he wasn't even an employee.
I feel sorry for him but i have had bosses like that and it aint fun to live with...also maybe i was like him as well when i became a manager...i hope not but....

Ah you have to feel so sorry for David at the end asking not to be made redundant😮
Yes, there is a strong element of pathos there. The Office is a comedy mockumentary, but also kind of a serious discourse about the types of personality involved, and a drama. His whole identity is tied up with him being the cool boss at the company he comes into every day. Even with the overly generous redundancy, he can't tear himself away, and must be forced out.
“Nothing ever changes by staying the same.” Mind blown 🤯 😂
You can almost see Patrick Balladi biting his cheek to stop himself laughing when Ricky stands up in the Bernie Clifton ostrich costume. That had to be a scene with multiple takes.
For the Extras, who just sat at their desks and never said anything, this must have been the Gig of a Lifetime. All that Fantastic "Kraft Services".

The joke is good, but the hand gesture is so embarrassing, I think she is laughing _at_ him not with him
3:28
I appreciate this particular scene where the camera pans on Brent's face, capturing the range of disappointed faces. This moment seems especially poignant for Brent, given that his sense of humor is a point of pride for him. While he may sometimes overestimate his knowledge, he's willing to concede in an argument. However, when it comes to humor, he genuinely believes he excels, often taking credit for the office banter. The revelation that Neil is now considered the funniest in the room appears to deal a blow to Brent's ego, evident in this particular scene.
What I like about it is, the quality of their jokes are basically the same, but Neil gets the tone right for a workplace, but Brent is needy and trying too hard.
And then so he later follows up with the bmc joke in an attempt to save the day. Classic

Very different, but the darker pathos where Brent fails to get an expected response reminds me of 'The Entertainer' with Laurence Olivier from 1960... although I couldn't sit through that film many times because it never lifts back up in mood... must know the office word for word now! I remember a day or so after seeing the Christmas specials I saw Dawn walking around a deserted shopping Center in the Midlands.. too surreal! She was great in this :-)
I haven't seen "The Entertainer". I'm not sure if I want to if it's a bleak journey. I've noticed alot of British comedy seems to have a dark, uncomfortable tone. It seems there is a need or desire for uncomfortable anxiousness to be simmering below the surface of the laughs. Why is this? Did the 1970's economic crisis through the 1980's troubles bring this bleakness to a generation of writers/comedians? Maybe I'm wrong and reading to much into things. The dark underbelly seems palpable in this series.
@@olliefoxx7165 Yes! So many elements that form tiny parts of Brent. The list is endless - and the down-turns and black comedy of the 1970/80's must play into this... thinking Boys from the Blackstuff, Bread, Frank Spencer, Spinal Tapp, Norman Wisdom, Tony Hancock.. it's a credit to the writing that it's neither one nor the other but something of all of them.
@eltonlovell9898: Bloody hell, that’s a coincidence - I watched The Entertainer last night! It’s on TH-cam and I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it.
