I still plead with them to laugh at Brent’s jokes sometimes (so I can come up for air). My brother always said there was nothing harder than watching a comedian die on stage. No quarter is given in this brilliant view of humanity.
For months I've been trying to work out where I'd heard Keir Starmer's voice before. All this time it was the "I don't agree with that in the workplace" quote.
Pure genius. Ricky Gervais somehow turned sit. Come into a totally different comedy psychology. It took a while to get it but who could think that up?the man's different way of approaching comedy was and is so original that he deserves any award going. You have to be funny. I'm 73 and this fella is one of the best.b.t.w.he has great people working with him, actors etc.
I can endlessly rewatch all of The Office, except for the scene where Brent pretends to sack Dawn, "as a joke". Seriously, it's excruciating and I can't bear it. It's even worse when she bursts into tears and you see the look of panic and embarrassment in Brent's face.
Funny you say that because it was that exact scene that made me stop the video and peruse comments for a bit because I can't bear it either. I mean, it's still a brilliant scene but I can't go through it again.
I had a boss years ago who approached a new staff person of about six months, a young Vietnamese woman in her first job. He staright up asked her if she was pregnant. The poor woman was absolutely mortified. It was the absolute peak of insensitivity and crassness. Still makes me ill just thinking about it.
The character Neil is genius. You will always meet a 'neil'. They always turn up as a newbie and seem affable but they are after your job! Watch out. They've done their homework
I've seen the office hundreds of times over and over, and somehow I've only just caught Ricky saying 'managed to scrape a first I believe' for Brent to immediately point at the PG tips monkey. Why is that transition so poetic? 😂😂😂
How can anyone pick the best moments ? For start to finish it is one gem after another..... i doubt we will ever see a series to surpass this . Top drawer
Great stuff from Gervais and Merchant. IMO Ricky's best stuff was in collaboration with Merchant, bouncing off ideas rather than his solo writing. Also Ricky is now in his 60's & still mind-bogglingly doing over-the-to p m a stu r ba t ion of p ae dophile material on stage!
He used a lot of stuff from Karl too, literally stole his stuff from Karl when they had that podcast. Sits there and tells Karl he's an idiot, but ends using his stuff for live shows
David Brent is the most tragic man. I'm torn between feeling desperately sorry for him, and wanting to scream at him at just how pathetic he is. Fantastic comedy/character study creation.
The Christmas special after the two seasons is what makes this show so genius in my opinion since it takes David Brent from this pathetic and exaggerated character to a human being with real emotions that you actually end up rooting for.
