I think him being voiced by Owain’s VA is fitting given his somewhat theatrical demeanor. And just like Owain, you know deep down he cares for his loved ones.
In GBA/DS games his theme sounded silly, like a badly done MIDI it was, so Kanbei himself felt like a parody of a leader. But with real instruments? It becomes actually epic and makes him feel like a really good character. Hits especially hard in Duty & Honor.

This man got the biggest glow-up in the game, which is good because his design and theme match the feeling of taking W's you never should've with his buff units.
Now I'm imagining Kanbei using some kind of Oni mask while trying to cut his way through a bunch of tanks, then he makes a flash step, a small dramatic pause, and then the enemy Medium Tank suddenly gets cut in two while Kanbei remains untouched.
I liked Kanbei's theme in the original. While I appreciate some of the updates, it feels like the individual elements of it are competing against each other rather than harmonizing
They made the flute sound less sharp when that was one of the defining traits of the original version. Also, a background instrument is a lot quieter. Maybe it is the Koto. It is something that takes some getting used to for me.
The theme of deploying a mountain of troops. Also just noticed the name change from Yellow to Gold. I can see why considering the negative connotations Yellow can have in regards to Asians.

People would've absolutely been furious about it and demanded it be changed, even IF Asians made it. People will take any chance they are given to be outraged about something and this would have been no different.

Very much a coded fascist. This character and his theme are total homages to Nippon Nationalism. It's even reflected in how the troops have straight up antiquated Imperial Japan designs from WWII, but are "the best army in the game." I still love the game, and Kanbei is a favorite of mine, but as someone who is Korean, I can sense the darker themes behind this character.
Can't help myself, but it is just too overstuffed. To much going on. While AW2 Kanbei-Theme is much more primitive, it put's it's emphasis on the correct tunes. The japanese-honorable feeling at first, then everything cuts out to make room for the trumpets. It's good balance, just like Kanbei's Troop who have ridculus firepower and defense.
