I love this! I am new to instructional design, I moved from managing a store to joining the ID team at my company. The biggest share I have 5 months in- we wear many hats! I have always had a passion for design, but learning adult learning theories and figuring out how to work with video, closed captioning, script writing, have been more interesting and fulfilling than I ever knew! This video definitely is a great wrap up of all the things we do as instructional designers.
Great information presented in a concise, easy-to-grasp manner; it is so important to cut through the "fog" of misinformation and deliver the particulars that truly matter. Thanks, Tim! Yes, all those components for ID are overwhelming! I like writing, organizing, and simplifying the content in a script or storyboard to create an effective eLearning solution.
I was asked on an interview recently, "What are your 3 greatest strengths?" It was hard to answer that and especially for that job as I was trying to decide between answering in order to get the job or being completely honest... Honesty is best though. As I answered the question, I realized I probably didn't want the job anyway as I'm creative and wanted more facilitating, writing, or developing courses in Storyline or video. This job was about setting up processes for a new L&D department. I'm sure a person who is organized and good at setting up new systems would be perfect for that job, but not me.
Thanks for sharing! These are great insights. And yes, honesty is key. There's power in being confident not just in what you're good at...but also confident in where you still have opportunities. It demonstrates self-awareness.
Thiswas so easy to understand thank you i went from making and selling handmade bags to joining a nine month course on basic instructor skills training to teach what i know they taught us instructional design and i was so hooked. i love to write come up with new course ideas after a needs analysis, i am learning how to create videos people can actually learn and gain competencies from. i am enjoying designing short courses as well not online yet but eventually i saw your channel yesterday and subscribed
Your videos are so helpful! Thanks for doing these. I'm pretty strong at multimedia development skills, more so than the other skills. I'm artsy fartsy...I drew my little person icon!
Thank you for the constant guidance. I am interested in transitioning from higher ed teaching to higher ed id roles. I have 6+ years of teaching experience and I am building up my portfolio to incorporate all skills necessary for ID. I am volunteering as an id at 2 places to learn the ideas while collaborating with people. While rewriting my cv, do I add the volunteering experience in my experience section? I am confused because in my other volunteer jobs I have worked as a subject matter expert making ppt videos and online learning modules for a diverse community worldwide. It signifies my support for inclusion and diversity. Can you please help ?thanks in advance.

I love being reminded about the "T-shape" mindset. It helps me feel better about the areas I am weaker in when I frame it like that.
Yes! It’s okay to have weaknesses…we all do! The key is focus on being even greater at the things you’re already good at.
