agreed! i think part of it has to do with not having a single-owner team tbh, way less ego at the top so the focus is always on just running a smooth organization with lots of continuity and vertical integration: g-league to bench, bench to starter, even assistant coach to head coach. don't know if what other shared-ownership teams are in the NBA but it's worked well for the Raps and the Warriors
Full court presses are very effective and should be run a lot more frequently. That being said, one of the biggest reasons NBA coaches don't use it every game is because it's strenuous to the players' stamina. Full court pressing every time the ball is in the opponent's possession will lead to teams tiring out a lot more quickly, it takes a lot more effort and can lead to a lot more fatigue. Props to nurse for trying it out tho, and the raptors definitely played with a lot of heart, managing to give it their all defensively while still managing to be an unstoppable force on offense. Can't imagine a team like the rockets ever full court pressing, especially in the offence oriented playing styles of the league today. They'd rather conserve the energy for offense.
SihYuan Wu it helps when nick nurse can go deep into his bench for some minutes. A lot of those guys are hungry and have something to prove so it’s kind of a situation where everything is falling into the right places.
They can’t be ran often . You have to have the right roster , raptors have a bunch of athletes that just sprint and work hard . Most rosters don’t have that
Yes, SihYuan. I remember running these in HS basketball and fatigue is definitely an issue. Nurse was running 4 guys eager to prove themselves and who have seen limited minutes this year. That's why it worked, ultimately.
Well everybody knows that its strenuous to do full press. But if you're going to compare a high school bball player to a professional bball player, then I expect that it would work much better in the NBA considering how conditioned their body is. I only find it dumb to people who are so called "experts" saying it's tiresome to do it, yet after witnessing this worked, everyone is dumbfounded.
if the other team is like even half way competent they should be able to punish a defense for trying this. getting beat this way is easily one of the most shameful things ive seen in.the nba in a while

Finally someone taking advantage of the defense schemes instead of man to man all game
honestly, Nick Nurse doesn't get enough credit. He is so gutsy to do some crazy shit like this and make it happen, and how his team trusts his decision 100% is why they won a Championship last year. And because they had Kawhi... And KD was injured.. AND KT was injured...... AND I've subscribed because I love increasing my NBA 2K defense IQ.
its because if you man press, its easy to beat ur man if u have the whole court to dribble even with only 8 seconds. if you traps/zone press, all you need to do is have the awareness to find the open man because to trap, theres 2 guys on 1 guy and teams expect nba players to find the pass easily. also, its easy to call a timeout and draw up a simple press break. reason why this one worked is the mavs got lazy because they were up alot. and coach carlisle did a bad job here. also, mavs really lost their will and energy when their huge lead was taken away which is understandable. this was the perfect scenario in which the trap played out. but i do agree that traps should be used occasionally but for the most part, half court man is what i'd go with.
@@f0rtyy815 yeah I don't think highschool tactics should be replied upon but they should be used on occasion to throw off teams. Especially zones against teams like the 76ers who can't shoot

Jr. Donaldson 20 Hollis Jefferson, OG, Siakam, Bouchard, Miller are all long and fast. Anyone of them can make the all defence. Then you have Kyle Lowry, Fred Van Vleet, Mccaw, Norm who annoying as hell, constantly steeling the ball, not to mention Iblaka & Gasol who chase all the big man away from the rim. This is a difficult team to deal with. Teams must hate to play them. Did I mention they are the #1 team in 3 point shooting😉 They just need to stay healthy for the Playoffs.

I can see Good players wanting to join the Raptors if Toronto keeps this going. That will give them the extra spice they need. 🌶️ It's fun watching such old fashioned bball ripping it up! ✌️
@@GT-ii7ci Of course, but you would be surprised how their mistakes looked similar to my team's mistakes :) I was really shocked by this actually. The same struggles we had (let the ball reach left or right), re-organize quickly enough after bucket, get back to normal defense quick enough if the press didn't work etc. I guess if you find a college or high school games using diamond and one you will find the same similarities I mentioned.
Nice - we used this one in our last tournament and came back from a huge deficit too, same scenario. Full court press, clutch 3's - it was fun to be part of, and super frustrating for the opponent.
I agree 100% with what you said at the end, it's a shame how rarely teams throw a wrench at the other teams offense with relatively unorthodox defenses to catch opponents off guard
Why did the Mavs take so long to figure out they should set up their offense and not rush, after they beat the press? That's basketball 101 and the players should have known it straight away without waiting for their coach to call a timeout to tell them.
I'm often surprised that even a 2-3 zone catches out NBA teams. I would have thought they all faced it in High School. As soon as the coaching staff see it, they should shout "zone" and then "1-3-1" ~ which is the Paper to that zone's Rock. Yet it really catches them out, like lions boggled by a Porcupine. I can eat this thing, but how?!
Jalen Brunson picks up his dribble A LOT. I'm a Mavs' fan watched like 20 games this season. He does it all the time. His court vision, his peripheral vision sucks!

honestly, Nick Nurse doesn't get enough credit.
What's wrong with his mic
Read the other comment, it's not a mic but a basketball, appearently
Can you hear me shaking my head?
Thought my earbuds were tripping lmao
I think he's sick
@@detski- HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I've always been impressed by Nick Nurse and the Raptors' defense, notably their full court press strategies. One of the best teams in the NBA
Nick Nurse is such underrated
The looks on Carlisle and Silas' faces at 3:21 like 'You really gonna do this right now'?
Nurse's schemes are impressive. I predict that Raptors have a great chance to make it back to the ECF this season thanks to his schemes.
but they also have to get the right defensive players to execute it which they have. thats how good their roster construction is
@@Killerqueen2000 That's why teams want to hire Masai. He knows how to build teams.
Nick Nurse should win Coach of the Year! 🏆🏀
I have never understood why teams don't use more high school tactics. I'm glad Nurse and Spoelstra are finally changing that
its because if you man press, its easy to beat ur man if u have the whole court to dribble even with only 8 seconds. if you traps/zone press, all you need to do is have the awareness to find the open man because to trap, theres 2 guys on 1 guy and teams expect nba players to find the pass easily. also, its easy to call a timeout and draw up a simple press break. reason why this one worked is the mavs got lazy because they were up alot. and coach carlisle did a bad job here. also, mavs really lost their will and energy when their huge lead was taken away which is understandable. this was the perfect scenario in which the trap played out. but i do agree that traps should be used occasionally but for the most part, half court man is what i'd go with.
@@f0rtyy815 yeah I don't think highschool tactics should be replied upon but they should be used on occasion to throw off teams. Especially zones against teams like the 76ers who can't shoot
@@abdullahrob7251 agreed. sixers are a special case tho because i feel teams can run 2-3 the whole game and win. but even for other teams, i think you can throw twists and turns here and there to confuse the offense a bit.
Remember Nurse's "janky" Box and One D against Steph Curry last finals? Completely shut down his offense after that. Nurse is pretty unconventional when he needs to be and that's why it often works.
Nick Nurse is the best coach in the NBA.
Inigo yeah cause Greg Popovich doesn’t exist 🤓🤡
@@Unknown-zs9yc please remind me of the spurs record, and don't bring up his prior championships, we're talking about now
@@Unknown-zs9yc Why isn't Pop winning now? On paper his players should be good, he isn't playing with trash
No one is mentioning Boucher... man is our secret weapon
looks like coach is on vacation and is using his phone to record this video.
This video helps me understand how effective Boucher really is on the court. Between defense, pick & roll, and drawing fouls its pretty impressive.
Been saying this forever
WHOLE TORONTO RAPTORS SQUAD= PURE LEGENDARY
Did I mention they are the #1 team in 3 point shooting😉
They just need to stay healthy for the Playoffs.
I’ve been refreshing @BBALLBREAKDOWN all day because I knew coach would get last nights comeback!! GO RAPTORS
Finally Coach made a vid on the Raps... Too bad he recorded it in a public washroom 😢😢😢
Love the full court press. Coach Nurse sure had these bench guys work their ass off! It's a well deserved win. Christmas Miracles :)
I promise that next vid he will advertise a mic and the audio will be fixed
Nice to have you back coach. Nice video
i cant even hear him shaking his head cause the mic quality :(
Nick Nurse is a gem, definitely one of if not the best coach in the NBA, he's so creative and fearless.
Nurse the legend.
Shoutout to all the fans that stuck around despite their team being down 30 in the 4th. I can't imagine any other fanbase that has that kind of loyalty.
I think last season championship by raptors is really not 100% because of kawhi, but because of raptors teamwork and good coach.. I think one more inclusion of legit scorer that can fit raptors perfectly, they are in good hands
I can see Good players wanting to join the Raptors if Toronto keeps this going.
That will give them the extra spice they need. 🌶️
It's fun watching such old fashioned bball ripping it up! ✌️
William Hooke it will work on only one game because everyone will start refreshing how to beat these shitty old fashioned stuff
they were good but the championship is definitely because of Kawhi and an injured Warriors
To be fair raptors have always been good, they needed a player like Kawhi to take them over the top
You can not put 100% on anything unless you are GOD
Love your commentary mate. I'd watch you break down NBA all day😁👍
I played this defense, not easy to coordinate all players
yeah well this is the highest level of basketball in the world though
#NurseForCoachOfTheYear
I agree 100% with what you said at the end, it's a shame how rarely teams throw a wrench at the other teams offense with relatively unorthodox defenses to catch opponents off guard
I love Nick nurse
I've seen this since last year and nobody talking about it. So....
..FINALLY thank you for this video breakdown!!!
Coach what happens to your mic
Gamma
Mavericks are a huge surprise this year. Happy to see it!
If The Claw was still in the raptors, they would get another championship.
I like how the baskets sink in time with the beat in the intro
Fullcourt press, yes let's have more of it. Go Raps!
Nick Nurse is revolutionizing how Defense can be played in the NBA Level
Crazy how they only showed the offensive highlights on TV never would’ve known about this. Thanks coach nick
Boucher a future DPOY or all defensive team
Ok calm down Jesus Christ. Yall overreact to EVERYTHING and that's not an insult to dude, just live in reality.
Boucher has insane basketball vision and IQ he is litterally in the right spot at the right time everytime, his 4 blocks where key his defense was A+
why would jalen brunson pick up his dribble as a screen is being made????
Brain fart under pressure
Jalen Brunson picks up his dribble A LOT. I'm a Mavs' fan watched like 20 games this season. He does it all the time. His court vision, his peripheral vision sucks!
He crumbles when stressed
Coach Nick, insane comeback. Incredible breakdown. Thanks for all the amazing analysis.
Damn gotta give Nick props. I already see his zone concepts getting stolen a bit by Kerr and Rivers and those are just the two I've noticed. He really thinks outside the box (and 1🙂)
TheElectronicsMan100 stolen lol
@@kungfukenny1540 you know what I mean, everyone "borrows" lol
