- This is one of my favorite scene from the movie Man On The Moon, in which Jim Carrey attempts to portray the life of comedian Andy Kaufman. Andy Kaufman acted as a strange, funny character named "Latka Gravas" on a TV show called "Taxi".

This movie was made at the very right time when the original cast members could be assembled together and still portray themselves
If I'm not mistaken aren't they all still alive except Andy and Jeff Conway?

@@jedijones yeah like they did with Mark Hamil as Luke in The Mandolorian. They did a pretty good job at de-aging him!
I just love the fact that they got as many of the actual cast members to play the characters again on a rebuilt set. You NEVER get to see that in other biopics.
I wonder if Marilu Henner remembered her lines from the episodes they were re-enacting, given her eidetic memory.

@@Dim4323 Danny DeVito played another character in the movie so he couldn't also appear as Louie/himself.

I loved the way they incorporated the Taxi theme, mixed in with clips from the show sets in this movie...and the staff still looked great in their reprised roles as well..so well done.
Say what you will about this movie, but you cannot deny this is one of the best scenes in the entire movie
I enjoyed it. I didn't know his other work.
It almost made me wish that they made more episodes since the whole cast was there with the reconstructed set.
This was an awesome scene and the theme song is blended perfectly into the background. The cast looked superb and they could've pulled off a one year season or two with how well everyone still looked.

Kaufman & Lloyd where the craziest people on Taxi. Classic stuff.
De Vito was the funniest though. His character was voted best American TV character of all time a few years back.
@@j-boogiebrown9961 Someone said that it wouldn't have worked without DeVito, even though it was Judd Hirsch's show. Maybe it could have worked without Danza and Conaway, but it was an ensemble and if you took out pieces, it might have broken.
@@sandal_thong8631 It was an awesome cast & great writing. I loved all the characters. I did miss Bobby in season 5, I think it was a mistake to let him go (even though it was his own fault).

Kaufman was incredible, but De Vito owned the show from beginning to end. I can’t watch this show without admiring how crazy talented De Vito is.

Yeah Kauffman was actually funny and a better human.
I love how they got everyone back but couldn't use Devito since he played Shapiro. Also I think Marilou has a lawsuit on her hands. 1:05

One of the things that I love about this scene is that at the end when he said he doesn't want to do taxi anymore is true andy kaufman hated doing this show same with the other show he was in
Some people don't know when they have it good. A couple guys in the Monkees said the same, while others were writing hits for them. How many musicians and groups never have a hit?
Taxi is probably the only thing Kaufman did that was universally beloved. No wonder he hated it.

Taxi was great.
He actually invented Latka. It was originally part of his stand up routine. The producers of Taxi liked it so much they wanted him to do it on the show. But Andy was an artist and artists don't like doing the same thing for too long. If he had known he would be doing that same routine for six years he probably would have said no. I don't know this for a fact, but I think he came to regret ever creating that character.

Love this clip from Man on the Moon. Did Tony Danza choose not to participate? Obviously DeVito couldn't, but I love that they got everyone else. Jim Carrey deserved an Oscar in 1999.
Danza didn’t like Kaufman IRL and felt it would disingenuous to show up and pretend otherwise. He was also doing a Broadway show at the time too.
@@Dynaman21 Fuck!? REALLY!? I cannot believe how VAIN Danza must of been about it. I would of been thrilled and it would of touched my heart to at least pretend he was back alongside me during a scene in the movie like that!
Devito could’ve done it. He had a mustache as his character but how cool would’ve been if he had in his gray suit and vest?.
@@Dynaman21 that’s not true. He hated him while on taxi at first yes. But I watched an interview with Danza. He said he became friends with him, even refereed some of his wrestling matches

Yes
It was antithetical to what he thought live performance should be, which is something that confuses and shocks the audience. Taxi is a sitcom that’s standard, but it does everything right in a way few others do.

It's a shame that practically the entire cast reunited, but you only see Randall Carver at the very end around 1:09 when the whole gang are together (on the far left, standing with Judd Hirsch and Carol Kane). He wasn't actually featured in any scene.
I don't believe Tony Danza was involved in this movie.

Tony Danza and Andy Kaufman were actually friends. Actually, all of the Taxi cast liked Andy. Not so much at first, but they just warmed up to him and accepted his eccentricities. Tony Danza was actually on another project when they were filming Man On The Moon.
And, Andy actually didn’t mind being on Taxi. He actually liked his cast mates. His only problem was he would get bored playing the same role. That’s why they invented Vic Ferrari.
Does anyone know what episode that part with Latka and Jim was from? I'm a big fan of Taxi, but I don't remember ever seeing that. Thanks!

Truth is Andy did hate working on a sitcom and said its the lowest of the low.
He would but head with the creators of the show and wanted to his own projects

To be honest, I did not like this movie "Man On The Moon." Jim Carrey, the cast, & the director did a terrific job bringing this film to life, but I felt the storyline was lacking and I wish they told more about Andy Kaufman's earlier life. Jim Carrey's performance and seeing the original cast members from "Taxi" was the only rewarding part of this film.

Jim Carey isn't a good actor at all.
But then Norton would've insisted on rewriting the whole damn thing, and it probably would have sucked.
