    Danny, hit it on the head. Andy wasn't a comedian, I rarely laughed out loud at his stuff...but as a performance artist he was an absolute genius. Unparalleled and unsurpassed to this day. Thanks Andy.

      Pretentious nonsense. He was absolutely LOL funny. His Letterman appearances are some of the funniest things I've ever seen.

    • @AdoraVivos
      @AdoraVivos 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@sullywinn4225 Yes, Andy Kaufman was funny, no doubt about that. But humor is subjective, right? Your version of 'funny' does not have to align with mine and vice-versa, and that's toally fine, we both can still be right within the confines of our bad takes on what humor is. But he was also a brilliant performance artist. IMHO Andy was not really aiming for the laughs, he was crafting a mind-bending experience. I don't even think he took the audience into consideration most of the times, he was just performing for the sake of performance. To me, that’s pure genius, it’s like he was playing 3D chess while everyone else was playing checkers. So, yeah, he was hilarious, but he was also so much more than that. He was an performance artist, through and through.

      I saw 'Man on the moon' for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant film, Jim Carrey was brilliant as Andy Kaufman, didn't know anything about Kaufman before seeing the film and saw some side by side comparisons of real life Kaufman footage next to Carrey as Kaufman and saw how brilliant both Kaufman and Carrey were and still are.

    I drove for a cab company on the west side of manhattan in the 70's. We had characters just like the TV show Taxi, including a "Starter" who was a short bald headed man who towered over us behind a glass window in an elevated booth just like louie. You had to "shape up" which meant you had to wait a few hours for an available cab, so there were all sorts of characters sitting around for several hours a day. I was floored by the TV show - it was so true to life for me.

    Sometime during the mid 1970's I saw Andy at a small club on Long Island named My Father's Place. The reaction John Belushi described to Danny is the same reaction the audience had at that club. For a while, no one was sure if Andy was putting us on or if he was really that awkward foreign guy. Right at the moment when everyone was convinced that what Andy needed was a to be given the hook, he did his Elvis impersonation and the audience reacted the same way in which the scene is portrayed in Man On The Moon. That night, Andy was the opening act for a popular musician and he made such an impression that he was the only thing anyone could talk about at the end of the night. I cannot recall who the main act was!

    Someone with whom Andy worked who really understood what he was doing was Jerry Lawler. Check out some shoot interviews with him discussing working with Kaufman. Andy was a huge fan of professional wrestling, and had a tremendous instinct for drawing heat as a heel. He could also draw the sympathy of a babyface. He was a walking wrestling promo. Hollywood wasn’t ready for that.
