    Hi Richard I’ve watched this video and a few others. Good idea to go see a lawyer and consider entering the DV Lottery perhaps? I feel for you! Look after both of you and try and bite the bullet big guy! It’s going to be WORTH IT! I started a channel a few years ago interviewing South Africans that moved overseas and their process and how they adapted. It’s hard to adapt but hearing from others is always good. We learn and push through because that’s who we are. Good luck and let’s see more of these videos and what life over there is all about. Wishing you both well!

      We've played the DV for a few years now. Waiting for May to see if we were successful this time :P

    I feel your pain to a large degree, I however knew on our journey here that I would not be able to work, so I guess I've resigned myself to it. But I understand that struggle. I have been able to volunteer at the church, but the idea of not being able to work drives me insane. I'm the kind of person who wants to contribute to my family's income. It's frustrating driving down the road and seeing how many jobs are available. And I would love to be able to work too. So I'm praying for your situation and hope there is a way to get a different outcome and one that won't mean you have to leave. I'm thinking about you guys!

    Get your iTIN. It's no big deal. Later when you get an SSN, you file a form that lets them replace the iTIN with the SSN.

    • @RichardBauer_
      @RichardBauer_  ปีที่แล้ว

      But the ITIN still doesn’t allow me to work etc. however I do need to get it so that I can file taxes :/ go figure. I can’t work but must file taxes 😂

    • @yankinwaoz
      @yankinwaoz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardBauer_ yes. That’s true. But there is more to taxes than wages. For example, it allows your wife to reduce her taxes because you are married.

    I feel your struggle and I'm sorry you are dealing with this. The system as a whole is completely messed up, especially with about 11 million job opening and only 5 million people unemployed. I know many people who have sponsored South Africans and ALL of them can't talk highly enough about our work ethic. I paid $40,000 total for an immigration attorney and couldn't have done it otherwise. No one understands how difficult it is to get into the U.S. Is Lindy on an H1-B? Is she eligible to apply for a GC through one of the GC categories?

    • @SkyeBarry
      @SkyeBarry ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the U.S. has a "residence-based" tax system (i.e. taxes its citizens and permanent residents on their worldwide income, hence why you're unable to earn income anywhere). SA has a "territorial-based" tax system, which only taxes income earned in SA, but it can tax ALL income earned in SA, even by temporary workers.

    • @RichardBauer_
      @RichardBauer_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that explains the ruling around the work thing. Thanks for the info. #themoreyouknow
      It’s crazy the whole process but I’m years to come it will be worth it. Lindy is on H1B and from what we’ve been told she is eligible for GC. We’re waiting on the lawyer to confirm the next steps. She is working for a great company that are willing to go the GC route… we’re just hoping that I can get some work before she has her GC because that’s going to take 2-3 years for the application to be approved before I can apply for my work permit again. At least this is what I understood and once again could be wrong. My non-lawyer experience has proved me wrong so far 😂🙈

    Urg, this sucks big time.
    You're an extraordinary storyteller, and a podcast is a great idea.
    I follow a channel called The Wide Wake Podcast, and like you say, everyone has a story to tell!

    Man, I am sorry ya'll are going through this. Our immigration policies are ridiculous! I think the craziest part is that you aren't even allowed to work for foreign businesses. What does it matter to the USA if you are still working for a company in South Africa just because you are on US soil. If it were up to me I'd have you come sling some tile with me, haha.

    I hear ya. My wife immigrated from Australia. It cost us thousands of dollars and years of work. But millions of unvetted people just waltz right in at our southern border. Just say the magic "A" word (Asylum) and everything is handed to you on a silver platter.

    • @RichardBauer_
      @RichardBauer_  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, we all have our stories to tell and no two stories are the same. So whatever happens with the asylum/refugee route is their journey. I just wish we could more easily change the rules about allowing H4 visa holders to work.
      Part of our story but glad to hear your wife made it through

    I was enjoying your videos. I’m American and worked for years in South Africa. I’ve helped lots of people come to the US and most have stayed.
    I’m saddened by your take on your situation. You didn’t do your homework and appear to blame the policies of the US. While the US government is terribly broken and dysfunctional, USCIS has a process and a lawyer could’ve helped.
    Good luck.

    • @RichardBauer_
      @RichardBauer_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mark. We want to stay and will continue to do what we can to stay. This is home unless we are forced to leave.
      It’s a frustrating situation. Yes, a lawyer could have told us but unfortunately we filed independently and gathered information from the USCIS website and Facebook groups. Turns out… the info we read and gathered was incorrect. Having said that, I still think the ruling is much need of reform. A lawyer in this situation still wouldn’t be able to get me a work permit. Anyhoo, it’s one of the challenges of moving to a new country.
