That is what Loni did, but deep down inside she wanted to be a comedian. She worked 8 years as an engineer even though that was not her dream. Sometimes your plan B, becomes your plan A, thats what she means. Dont waste your young years. Follow your dreams and Plan A first. If you fail? You can always go to college at an older age. Or go to a trade school at an older age. At least you know from the age of 15-25 you put all your effort into your plan A.

I agree with Adrienne. It's good to have dreams but you have to be realistic about it. Not everyone is going to become huge like the people they mentionned. These people became who they are because, along with the determination, the belief, the talent, the hard work, they also had the good timing, the universe had those plans for them. So, it's better to be practical. I love photography and wanted to become one but the truth is that is really hard to make photography as your main profession. No matter how good you are. So, i work on that as a passion and I also do studies in law on the side. You need to have more than one dream. I know a girl who wanted to be a succeful model. She worked as model but also worked in hotel management as a plan b. At some point, the modeling world required that she does a certain things (compromise) if she wanted to work with BIG fashion designers. She was not comfortable with that so she continued her way in hotel managment.

      @Indraparadise 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As a librarian I see kids all the time doing these kinds of projects, not based on what they wanted to do, but what would be easy or look cute. Like a kid who dresses as Beyonce, but never sings a note because they just like Beyonce and have a yellow dress. They don't want to be a singer. Or they dress up as a sports star because they've got a jersey, not that they ever get off the couch and play sports.
If I were a teacher I'd do like a lot of teachers do book reports. Give them a list and tell them to pick one. That way it's an actual project.

You know how many people end up homeless or working at Starbucks their entire life because they never had a plan B thinking they were going to be an “actress”...
And to the point of a “degree sitting on the shelf catching dust”, formal education will change you and give you fundamental skills that you can use every single day. There are multiple reasons why people don’t/can’t pursue higher education, so I don’t want to undermine someone’s struggle but most of the time you can CLEARLY tell when you speak to someone who hasn’t gone to college, and that alone is a major differentiator.

It IS ridiculous. My first thought was, to even assume there are only a FEW jobs in the world that are so hard to achieve is ridiculous. So glad Tamara spoke my mind on that bit.
Secondly, I 100% agree with Adrienne about still having a hustle and with Jeannie for saying a kid should be able to dream it before all the realities really hit them. There will be enough factors in the world to deter them or encourage them later on. You can teach your kids about falling off of the ladder but don't stop them from climbing it to begin with.

I’m glad we had this topic because I recently watched an episode of one of my favorite shows “ Facts of Life “ and it was an episode where Tootie’s dad had came to Eastland and when he found out she wanted to own a salon with Natalie... he made a big deal out of it because it wasn’t what HE wanted her to do in life... which is why as a parent you need to break the curse of “ well since my parents did it and I did it , my child has to do it too “ & continue this legacy of doing something they aren’t passionate about... Also realize that your 11 or 12 year child may end up changing their mind on what career field they want to be in by the time they are 16... but you have to allow them to ! Let your children develop and make their own decisions and choices and trust them !

  • @amethystwolf24572

This is a very, very good thing. Part of the problem I and many millenials had is that we didn't start doing the hard work of figuring out what we *actually* wanted to do until college. Its important to acknowledge dreams and encourage them, but also encouraging them to have a Plan B. Being a doctor isn't the same thing as being an entertainer. There's a clear path to that career, and there is never a dearth of doctors - we always need more. Jeannie's thing about degrees that you don't want or use...that's solved by encouraging kids to do the hard work early - by encouraging them to be other things. And Adrienne is right, most people wanting to be a pro sports player or singer only want it because they have an unrealistic idea of that entails.
Let's be clear: these women are victims of survivorship bias. They're letting all the people who made it and ignoring the hundreds of thousands of people in LA, Atlanta, Nashville, NYC and Seattle RIGHT NOW who have been doing the work for a decade or two, but haven't gotten anywhere.

we glamirize pop stars, models, influencers (damm🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️), so that’s that (and yeah, I’m saying that being obsessed with Instagram, BUT I’m studying marketing 🙌🏼✨)

I agree with what Tamara said. Her mother didn't discourage them from their dreams. She supported them in what they wanted but encouraged them to get an education just in case. That way you have something to fall back on. This is a great balance. You may have that degree sitting on the shelf however, when your fame is gone, then you have that degree to fall back on. You're not just stuck. Always have a back-up plan.

Adrienne is right. Not everyone who wants be an actor, doctor, teacher, lawyer, singer will be that. Cause if no one wants to hire you, what r u going to do? Of course u can create your own opportunities but think of something else that u like as a plan be to fall on if your own opportunities dont work.
A lot of people wants to be this and that but end up in somebody's basement because of no plan.
Make the plan, execute the plan.

I think you have to follow your "passion". Most people don't have a passion. They have interests.
Also, a lot of these are examples of very exceptional instances. 100 people might make it, but millions fail, even if they're great at it.

8:20 I wanted to be a lawyer which I thought was a great field but the family wanted me to be a nurse and I HATE HOSPITALS. Long story short, I took multiple major and racked up student loans so now I'm a dropout (for now) with student loans.
I just wanna make fashion items and help people.

I was jealous because my brother seemed to have his life figured out so young and so did his fiancé. Now, it’s switched. I know what I want with my life finally and my brothers changed his mind and going back to school. Everyone finds their path!!

Like Lonnie said you need a hustle. Ways to make money. Whether it is considered professional or not. When I was younger all I wanted to do was be a nurse and move up in my field. But now that Im 29 Im looking to purchase my first real estate property and Im a licensed cosmetologist which has many avenues (sales, stylist, educator, influencer, business owner, salon owner, etc.) I could have done these things years ago. We dont have to limit ourselves.

This is some of the reason why we have no teachers, social workers, doctors, garbage men/women, etc. Etc. Everyone now wants to be into beauty and traveling. Where are the young politicians and and young surgeons? The movie stars, athletes, entertainers are a small subset of the population. We need to be realistic with these young kids.

We are so conditioned to think we should be something else rather than what we are truly passionate about. If we are more like Will Smith and Bruno Mars who followed their dreams, then there would be more successful people like them. Just like Gene mentioned, the majority of the population is not happy with their jobs. The reason why is because these people were conditioned from when they were little from family or society that their dreams were not possible or would not make them money. Like Oprah says
“ Follow your purpose and success will follow”. This is why I am passionate about guiding people on finding their purpose. Well said Tam and Gene and Loni. Adrienne love you too Doll, I just think that Tam and Gene have very valuable points. Why can’t their be more Will Smith’s? I think it is possible.

I understand what they're saying but I agree with Adrienne. Have dreams and aspirations but also keep expectations realistic. It's not easy working in any profession, but how our world is set up, we can have countless attorneys or doctors, etc. It requires a lot of work but the goal is realistically there if you put in the effort. However, to be an entertainer, singer or performer you have to be lucky and connected. You can work your behind off and have the most talent, but your chances of success is 1 in millions. If everyone could follow a formula and be a Beyonce then we'd have tons of Beyonces right now. But that doesn't mean you give up that dream. If you have it takes, work for it but have at least a plan B and those plan B's should be instilled early on.

They should let the kids dress up as whatever they want to be and ask them “how did you become a pop star?” So they know that there’s work that has to put into becoming a pop star. Afterwards, hit the kids with the reality of “it’s really hard to become a singer, if you can’t, what else would you be?”

Since I was Eight I fell in love with acting and music at that time I had won a contest at my school .managers were holding auditions kept calling my mom many times a week afterwards because they were interested in me . when I was 11 I found out about all of this and a felt really sad and really mad because she really knew it was my dream. Since then I’ve never tried to go for my dreams because I realize at the moment if my parents don’t see it in me why I’m i ? I’m just trying to say always support your children and what they want to do!!

so many parents robbed their children of not only a childhood but an adulthood and a life as well. tamera made a really great point about parents having a responsibility to pay attention to and identify what their children are good at, interested in and have a natural talent for so they can help cultivate that child's particular skill(s) etc. so many parents don't care about those things and now their children grow up and struggle to find their passion or talent later in life.
