We NEVER used ther term code red. It was called a blanket party. Usually they would throw a blanket over someone who was a screw up, hold them down while the other beat the piss out of them. There were also G.I. showers and other in unit discipline measures to get a Turdbird Marine to act like a Marine should.

Not to mention there wasn't any music. This little movie trick gives a feeling of absolute shock, because not a sound can be heard.

The monologue after the "handle the truth" phrase is simply AMAZING. You can disagree with the content but the way Nicholson delivers it is marvelous. A true masterpiece.

It is delivered fantastically. Psychology wise, its a huge deflection of guilt. Almost celestial tiered irony. What the hell does any of it matter if the very same man who puts soldiers on that wall, cant secure the safety of said soldiers by which to defend the people behind it, in the first place? Its given to the court as a moral-posture, but in truth, its undermining his very sense of identity towards his career, his men, and the people of his country.

Most of these comments praise Jack Nicholson and rightfully so, but let's not overlook Tom Cruise's performance. He was superb as well.

Cruise was good except for that scene when he is pretending to be drunk. That was not very convincing at all.

I had the privilege of seeing a sneak peak of this movie outside of an Orlando FL Navy base in the early 90's. The entire theater was packed full of Navy sailors...this movie could have been used as a recruiting film that month. This scene in particular got the loudest cheer from the crowd when Tom Cruise got Nicholson to admit the code red, especially when the 'dont call me son, Im a lawyer and an officer in the United States Navy" line came...awesome time!!! awesome movie!!!

And that's why these words are so dangerous. You can commit countless atrocities in the name of that freedom and feel justified at the same time. Vietnam, Congo, Iraq, Darfur, Afghanistan, Ukraine, all the same. Even German leaders used the phrase in the 30's and 40's to justify the occupation of sovereign countries. Freedom is a blanket that covers a nation but the world can still see the blood stains of the victims on it.
The funniest part of that line from Jessop was that he failed to recognise the egocentricity in it... He never provided freedom at all... He commanded a base of Marines that was illegally occupying a sovereign nation under the guise of "protecting" the US from a threat that hadn't been imposed since JFK's day. The man was a Cold War relic with delusions of grandeur.

When a person is guilty of some wrongdoing, they try to hide behind a range of emotions, from trying to laugh it off, to being surprised, to being shocked, to finally trying to deny any wrongdoing on their part, through an outburst of anger and/or rage. Finally, though, they accept their wrongdoing, confess it, and learn to live with it, and find a way to make up for their wrong.
I read Tom remembers seeing Jack alone on this set sitting in that chair yelling just like this practicing the lines.
Tom said he did it at least 6 times full out.

I remember Jack doing an interview where he said that they actually shot this scene literally 42 times before he got pissed and said " Damn, if you don't have what you want by now you ain't gonna get it. Can we go home now?" Tom said it didn't go exactly like that. But that was pretty much the gist of it. Tom said it was weird to see Jack get so pissed. He is such a pro and he didn't complain or even show any real irritation until the 42nd take and then he just lost it. Tom said " We all felt the same way. Jack was really the only one with the weight and the balls to say it." Needless to say, they all went home. From what Demi Moore said at least I think.( I could be wrong) " Jack never apologized for blowing his top. In fact. Everyone kinda danced on eggshells after that. No one wanted to piss him off again. He is a powerhouse actor and everyone on that set knew it. Jack to his credit said that Tom Cruise will never get the credit he deserves as an actor because he is so good looking. Jack said Tom Cruise is a hell of an actor. One of the best he worked with. That's saying something.
Cause he just spoke the truth and left it at that, no bullshit, no drama. None of this modern day ranting and raving like they are on a coke-fuelled rage.
Jack Nicholson stepped on A LOT of director and producer toes giving moments like this but because he didn't go over the top they kept wanting him back cause he was that good.

Apparently, Jack typically portrays himself. I believe that there is a video on TH-cam where a driver cut Jack off as Jack was driving, and Jack responded by catching up and stopping his car across the path of the other driver's car, forcing it to stop; and while humming, got out of his car and then calmly and methodically beat in the other driver's windows with a golf club while continuing to hum. :)
I recently heard Rob Reiner say Jack Nicholson delivered this speech with this much passion during every single take and even during every rehearsal. Amazing.
One of my favorite parts is when Caffey is trying to decide if he should “go for it”. Great acting, fabulous movie.

I love this movie. I love how the tension builds slowly, Kaffee and Jessup being all smiles and polite to each other the first time they met and then things getting more and more heated between them leading up to the point where they’re yelling at each other and then Jessup finally boils over. Brilliant!

Yet another example of the top notch screenplay and the incredible cast directed by Rob Reiner. This was one of those rare moments in time when the stars were perfectly aligned and the gods smiled down favorably. It would be difficult to find another movie like this.

We liked you Navy guys. Anytime there was a war you gave us a ride lol. Marine Corps vet. What the Jessup said was true. We do live by a code. He gave the order and they followed it. No matter how it turns out you take you lumps.
@@stevefuchs54 that’s right, and the mistake The colonel makes is trying to dodge responsibility for his orders. I think the point of this character is that someone’s ego can cause them to start believing they are more important than the truth and the code they serve. That’s why he acts like taking him down hurts the country. That’s a wrong attitude for a military commander to have. It’s dangerous.

This right here is one of the best acting performances of all time. Nicholson is just a class act way above the rest, Cruise, though he is not one of my favorite actors, give an amazing performance. To my humble view both had Oscar caliber performances in this movie. Just amazing to watch over and over again, no visual effects, no CGI, no stunt doubles, just plain old good acting. Mesmerizing.

This is probably the best scene of any movie I've ever watched. Jack Nicholson is an absolute Master at his craft. According to the Director Rob Reiner during rehearsals Jack went all out just as your seeing in the movie. All the younger actors looked at each other and said this is what it's like to be in the Big leagues. Nicholson is at a whole different level.
He better had brought his A game. He made $500,000 a day while he was there.

Jack Nicholson delivers a brilliant performance here - perfect. Jack is top 5 if not the greatest. It's easy to play the hero, but play the villain and deliver this smashing performance? that's the stuff.
But in general,Nicholson fell into playing crazy Jack Nicholson over and over again till he became caricature of himself.
Whether the hero or the villain to yourself you’re the hero and Mr Nicolson certainly remembered that fact.

This is easily one of the top 5 scenes in cinema history. Two masters of their craft putting on a clinic.
The thing I love about this movie is that while Colonel Jessop is guilty of an order that led to the death of one of his own (and I would say his conviction is just), he brings up a valid point about how societies rely on people they'd rather not "talk about at parties", meaning there's an ugly side that does the dirty work to keep the pretty side safe and secure.
Agreed, but it went over the line. A simple transfer off of the front line to a desk position would have sufficed. Didn't need to kill a man. They were all on the same team. Some people are cut out for the front and some aren't. Doesn't mean we should liquidate them.
@@sidneyrodrigues728 Agreed as well. If I didn't convey that enough I apologize. The Colonel had gotten crazy enough that he thought killing one of his own was acceptable when there were plenty of other better solutions. Santiago's justice was first priority over the Colonel's ego.

They did not realize that Santiago had an underlying condition that would kill him in the process of going thru a code red. The Col. just wanted him to know that he had to follow the chain of command and he needed to follow all the rules, written and unwritten. The Col. would most likely be charged with giving a unlawful order and maybe manslaughter at best. Definitely not a murder charge. In my opinion of course.

This, in no way, justifies the death of Santiago.
However, Santiago should not have been entered into military service in the first place.
I actually get where Jack's character is coming from. He didn't mean for Santiago to die, the code red was a haze to whip him into shape. If I dropped my gun, and it got glued to my hand for a week after I would never drop the gun again. Its been a long time since I seen this and remember a Marine saying something similar.
I swear, 30 years later and people still repeat that one golden line "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!"... this whole scene is just iconic!!! I'm sure in another 10 years, people will still be repeating it. by then? it'll have joined the eschelon of "here's looking at you kid," and "i guess we're not in kansas anymore toto." It really is that iconic.

@@jimmiemurvin1871 a code red in the military is basically where a soldier is beaten by others. It’s not necessarily to kill them. Something like this did happen because the soldier in question was going to leak the illegals activities that were happening at Guantanamo.

Every institution has it own sets of code n rules mores with closed ones . Can't blame Col Jessop or the def counsel either . But in the end , it all boils down to good acting ,which all top3 did.....Col Jessop n the 2 lawyers .
rissi negi Dawson and Downey acted upon orders initiated by Jessup and THAT’S why their sentences were relatively light. Jessup was willing to let the jury think that wasn’t the case, to save his own ass. Had he had his way, he’d have gone back to his base, while Dawson and Downey did serious time.

I served 4 years in the army back in the 80s. We had something similar to this, except they were called "blanket parties". When you screw up, they would wake you up in the middle of the night, throw a blanket over you, and punch you around a bit. But nothing as major as this.

gmccord1970 As a marine, you shouldn't send a weakling from one unit to another. He would still be a weakling either unit he goes to. He should be trained. Not through hazing of course, but he shouldn't just be transferred.
Heng Theng Hmmm, not sure I agree with your statement. One thing I have always admired about the military is that it is an organization primarily built on fulfilling objectives and is impartial in completing those objectives. In other words, the military does not care one iota about your interest as a recruit. I myself couldn't get in due to a medical DQ. It doesn't matter how much I WANTED to serve. What did matter is that I didn't meet the standards to get in. It's that simple. You either meet the standard or you don't. In the film, Santiago was a substandard marine. He obviously had the heart of the lion and didn't want to give up but that is besides the point. He simply couldn't do it. That doesn't mean he is a man of low character or that he can't do other great things in life. But, as a marine in training, he simply couldn't do it. There is little point in forcing a substandard marine to perform if he can't and wasting everyone's time and the taxpayer's money. I understand Jessup's desire to instill honor and core values in the Marine Corps and his men and I can understand on some level his thought process. But the honorable thing to do and the easiest solution is to have a doctor either sign off on Santiago's discharge and cut your losses.

This is probably the finest dramatic acting I've ever seen, displayed by Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. This is the typical 'good guy' beats the 'bad guy' acting.

I loved the movie, but to anyone who knows military protocol, Tom Cruise’s character would be in serious trouble for how he talked to Colonel Jessup.
He was counting on irritating him the Colonel annoyed the judge though so that changed things in Toms favour.
That's the whole point. If he didn't manage to get Jessup to say that he made the order, he expected to be court martial. It was mentioned earlier in the movie and was a risk that he took.

Yes Kaffee would be disciplined via administrative hearing;however considering the severity of the crime that Jessop admitted to and the fact that Jessop assaulted him afterwards. The CO would very likely give a fine and a formal caution. But dealing with a crime like manslaughter;Jessop would almost certainly be charged with would take precedence.
Given the circumstances, I'm sure Tom would've faced his punishment with pride, and dignity.
I watched this movie a few years ago and loved it. I think I'm going to have to watch it again because there's a lot I don't remember. Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise are both incredible actors! I especially love Tom Cruise.
