beyond the fun and variety of it, the way that many songs add depth to the characterization of kiryu and others

Y'know what I love about Karaoke? Its simplicity.
Unlike other minigames, with all their difficulty levels, massive depth, cheat items, and even entire storylines attached to them, all karaoke has to show for it is a Guitar Hero-like button press minigame, and the only "difficulty" is having other people cheer on you. That's it. It really helps with replayability on what is supposedly a very unreplayable activity. You're not pressured into playing a lot of it or playing perfectly, you're just encouraged to play, whenever you feel like it. You may not be on the mood for pool, golf, batting or even the bigger minigames like business or Dondoko. But you will ALWAYS be on the mood for a song.

Karaoke for me, is for a calm moment, the story can get rather heavy in certain chapter, so i usually do karaoke before progressing the story. 1 to calm myself before what's to come and 2 to cool down the moment before.

Personally, I think one of the reasons the karaoke is impactful because it's an artistic endeavour that can act as common language/unifier. I've used some of the songs as a sort of baseline to understanding some Japanese words and phrases. My girlfriend, who is Polish, went through something similar listening to English songs and bands before coming over to the UK.

    • @Xxandrew01

Too true. I mean look at the most popular karaoke song in the series, Baka Mitai for example. When that became a meme back in 2020 so many people thought the title of the song was Dame Da Ne, due to that being the most dramatic part of the song, only for them to look it up and have the results call it Baka Mitai, for them to possibly be confused of it coming from a Japanese crime game with dude's who fight each other shirtless, much less that being the name of the song. Really does show you how music transcends language barriers.

I know most people don’t really care about this, but I think it’s cool that the English dubs have translated versions of each song. Sure, not all of them necessarily turn out great (I.e. too much auto tune in a lot of Infinite Wealth’s songs), and you could argue that some of the intricacies with the Japanese lyrics get lost in translation, but the dub team could’ve easily just not bothered, and I still really enjoy some of them, like Greg Chun singing Baka Mitai or Robbie Daymond absolutely killing it with Hell’s Stew and If I Could Love The One I Love

Believe me when i say that i started singing almost every song i find 'singable' out loud because of Yakuza, To the point that when i went to a bar-karaoke with some friends, I didn't think twice and asked for a song. (If I Could Love The One I Love)
I know only i knew the lyrics, But i was surprised of how supportive some strangers can be. I don't regret that night.

The fact infinite wealth made each static image come to life in slow motion really made me depressed. Especially tonight; i dropped my controller mid way through. Karaoke is arguably one of the best things this series has to offer, and some even represent the feelings of our characters. Thank you for this video 💜💜💜

My biggest love for karaoke is how insanely off key the interjections are. And they're so insanely in character. But then them actually singing the songs we get proper skills. It adds so much characterization.

FIY Pure love in Kamurocho is not a ballad exactly but a bolero. It is a really interesting pick and one of my favorites
    But changing the topic.
What I enjoy the most in some karaoke songs is how tied to the story are their lyrics or cinematics. Almost like having an inside look into a character thoughts and feelings. For example Kiryu sounds more sincere in Baka Darou than with what he actually was saying in some scenes from IW
    Other examples:
Majima happy as long as you're happy
Kiryu and Nishiki changing the world
Kiryu telling you what he really thinks about Majima in Pride from despair
Majima explaining all his life philosophy in Majima no Majirock
Okita doing the same in Samurai's ondo
Hana complain about Akiyama's oblivious behavior in Ashura komachi...
The list goes on and on.
Damn, you can find even some really hard death wishes hidden in plain sight in one of the happiest in terms of tune songs: like finding a diamond in the sand

The imagery and story parallels are the best parts, aside from just how well-produced the songs are. So much can be said in those 2 short minutes the characters sing. I even appreciate the English dub versions of the songs (especially Honolulu City Lights), despite some of them being ruined by autotune. You can get so much enjoyment from hearing the track the first time and then seeing what the lyrics actually mean the next go-around.
My only wish is for Yagami to get to sing at some point if a hypothetical Judgment 3 ever happens. Seeing my favorite character getting to do this minigame would be great, and the cherry on top is that both of Yagami's VA's are really good singers.

  • @MrLemmy82
    @MrLemmy82 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

What I love about Karaoke, besides the quality of the tracks themselves, is how casual it feels. There are really no stakes, no rewards to get from it, even the completion stuff tends to only require very achievable scores of 90 rather than perfect performance. It's something you dip in and play for the hell of it, sometimes in very short sessions, before resuming what you were off to do.
But if you want to actually get perfect scores, the potential is there, and it's incredibly satisfying to end up getting those perfect scores, not because you set out to get them, but because you've been enjoying the songs so much you naturally learned their rhythm. When I finally got a perfect score on Hands in Gaiden, I was elated at my performance! I'm not perfecting Ichizu Samurai any time soon, but it's okay, because I don't need to. :)

What I like about the karaoke segments is that the song a character chooses to sing can shed light on the characters in a way that the main story cannot.
The most obvious examples are with Kiryu’s restart this night, Baka Darou and Majima’s Pride from Despair and As Long as you’re happy.
We don’t know if Kiryu and Majima are still hung up on the past, and it is these karaoke segments that reveal that.
The karaoke segments can also be really funny as well. If they don’t serve any narrative significance, I like to imagine that whoever is singing gets so into the song, they imagine themselves as apart of the music video. Like with Majima in 24 Hour Cinderella. He is literally imagining himself as being apart of the pop idol band.

I love when songs are atleast a bit connected to the characters or situations. My personal favorite is the fanservice in the lyrics of Ring, especifically Yuki, because is a sad song talking about a girl seeing the guy she loves getting married and have to put a fake smile [i say it is a fanservice, because is only unlocked after Majima comes back to Sunshine, and maybe there is a hint there, im just saying]

I finally got to sing karaoke at a college event, and the RGG minigame interpretation of karaoke is surprisingly accurate... When you hit that chorus and really get into the song, your mind goes elsewhere... All three songs I did, this was true for... I'm extremely hopeful that I'll get to hit a karaoke bar sometime with friends even though I'm not a drinker, I'd just be there for the karaoke lol

What makes me hooked with Yakuza karaoke is that I was hooked with the main character first, and it's none other than Kiryu. When karaoke was introduced in 3, I was not so hooked with this because the song that Kiryu can sing at that time (Pure Love in Kamurocho, a song that has enka-like elements in it) didn't interest me. Going to 4, Machine Gun Kiss started to hook me a little because it's a rock song, a music genre that I like, and then in 5 when Baka Mitai introduced to the world for the first time, I started to fall in love with karaoke because how catchy the song is, as well as having a pop-like arrangement in it.
