    That's a very nice 1998 M2 modell in dew green that you got there. Very good looking composition, especially the Judy fork in the same color! Maybe the old M739 derailleur doesn't fit and should be a time-correct beefier M750, which fit better to the cranks.
    I've been riding a few M2 Stumpjumpers for the past decades. The M2 frames actually are a regular 6061 aluminum with additional Aluminumoxide within the metall crystal structure to make them harder. M2 stands for 2 alloy components. They are made from Duralcan(C) and welded at Anodized Inc. in Oregon, USA. Unfortunately the material was so hard to handle with that it was quite expensive and further, the frames were so stiff that riding was somewhat unforgiving and the welds were notorious for cracking, mainly at bottom bracket rivet and steerer tube (1st and 2nd (from 1995) generation M2 frames). That's why the 3rd generation M2 frames (from 1998 on) got rid of the bottom bracket rivet and added upper and lower gussets at the steerer tube. Dualcan can only be stretched by 4-5% and buttoning the tubes was expensive and limited, thus quite heavy as well. The regular Stumpjumper M2 had only the seat tube buttoned, the S-Works a few more. With the new M4 alloy, which can be stretched much easier, it was much easier to manufacture and also using hydroforming to get same and even better frame characteristics than the previous M2 alloy. M4 alloy stands for 4 additional alloy components (Specialized listed them somewhere: copper, zinc...) and using hydroforming and thinner wall thickness it creates a nice compliant lightweight frame which is very nice to ride and cheap to manufacture at Merida Corp. in Asia. There are no more frames Made in USA. I could go on and on... but that should be enough here.

    • @lovecycling193
      @lovecycling193  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I met Mike Sinyard at a few races and events, M series alloys like beryllium were short lived. He was riding a titanium lugged Easton carbon tubes stumpy test frame at Durango when I last spoke to him. That was awesome would love to know what happened to that idea

    • @DilbertMuc
      @DilbertMuc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lovecycling193 Yeah, that was the Stumpjumper Epic with the Carbon tubes. I bought a similar Cadex in 1991, made by Giant. It had also carbon tubes and aluminium lugs but was heavy as hell. Carbon at that time was new and manufacturing was primitive. The Carbon Epics were made by Giant whose glued frames were really solid, compared to the Trek carbon lugged frames (I had a Trek 8700) that unglued after a few years.
      Anyways, the M2 stumpjumpers are classics, despite Ned Overend having hated them.

    • @lovecycling193
      @lovecycling193  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DilbertMuc yeah the guy I sold my Raleigh USA titanium/carbon Tomac edition to took into a aircraft engineering place at Poole or Bournemouth, the glue had crumbled. I shouldn't of sold that bike! But lots of rare parts! Including a Signed by John Tioga Disc drive pro and some Tioga Hydro / air forks, that could also be fitted out with a cartridge designed by Scott to take coil and oil damping.
      That frame had lugs by Lightspeed and I think again Easton or Mitubishi carbon 🤔 my memory sucks after my accident lol 🤣 I can remember some things vivid others not a all 😏

      ounds like you're an expert on retro Specialized bikes. I'm trying to find a Specialized frame to build out but not sure if a better option is a 1997 Specialized S-Works M2 or a 1997 Specialized Stumpjumper M2 FS. Any thoughts? Also, I found a 1995-98ish Specialized Stumpjumper M2 frame on ebay that the seller claims to be an S-works although it has zero "S-works" decals, only the stock Stumpjumper decals. Do you know if they made S-works Stumpjumpers back then?
      Also, my 1997 Rockhopper A1 Comp's frame has a few hairline cracks on the steering tube. I'm searching for a '97 Stumpjumper M2 or S-works M2frame to replace it. Do you know if the Rockhopper's parts/components will work properly on a Stumpy or S-works? The new frame will be the same size as the old.
      I appreciate it!

    • @DilbertMuc
      @DilbertMuc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@B.E.C.K. S-Works frames never have Stumpjumper (Tarmac, Diverge etc.) written on it. Only SPECIALIZED and later S-Works. However, S-Works frames always precede Stumpjumper frames by 1 or 2 generations. The current Stumpjumper gets the old S-Works frame while the new improved S-Works is being released.
      There is no difference between Stumpjumper M2 (alu 6061 and Alu-oxide) and Rockhopper A1 (alu 6061), apart from a few details (for fenders and rack). All Rockhopper parts can be moved to the Stumpjumper. It's all the same, apart the difference that S-Works had the premium XTR parts and Rockhopper the Alivio, STX etc. The Stumpjumpers usually were in the middle (LX, DX, XT)

      @@B.E.C.K. the M2 frame was an absolute bitch on tools and cost loads to make, back then the s works Vs comp M2 had the same tubes etc different paint the sworks saved on paint was way thinner, the comp / pro went up to XT. The s works up to xtr but also had the option of Carbon Custom Rock shox but branded specialized forks a S works CNC light weight chainset and basically more bling parts. I think the M4 had thinner butted tubes but I could be wrong. I remember reading that again the tooling costs just destroyed a big percentage of the profits on them. As did welding, I vaguely remember reading it was poisonous or needed an inert atmosphere to weld 🤔 shame really as they are true made in the US frames.

    • @lovecycling193
      @lovecycling193  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I ain't weighed her tbh, the wheels are basically DH rims n straight gauge spokes so weigh a ton lol, but I know from back in the day all the M2 frames shared the same tubes, the s works got a thinner style mat paint and extremely thin clear coat, to drop about 100 grams, most weight savings back then we're done specialized fitting high end finishing clear and groups, then also taking products like Rockshox etc and replacing the legs with carbon and crowns with the SL series magnesium ones. But specialized never pushed the weight to far down, my Yeti arc and Manitou HT Easton frames were way way lighter, but fragile! The yeti would dent lots! The Manitou crack! Hence why you tend to see less for sale in good condition.
