DJI Digital FPV Air Unit Disassembly & TrueRC Singularity 5.8 Direct Solder | DC5 Titan Antenna Fix!

  • Let's disassemble the DJI Digital FPV System Air Unit, remove the MMCX connectors, and directly solder the TrueRC Singularity antenna to the board!
    This project, dubbed Franken DC5, was fraught with fails! The iFlight DC5 Titan frame, in our experience, has poor antenna placement, which impacts the signal quality and crashability. We attempt to resolve this by replacing the convoluted antenna setup with a directly soldered TrueRC Singularity and a RotorRiot HD1 antenna mount.

    really well soldered. this is a superb upgrade over the ever-so-wonky MMCX issues with the vtx. thanks

      Thanks bud, good option for folks who have already broken the MMCX. The good thing is that the whole board is the ground as well in case you damage the traces on the side.

    I build this frame with caddx vista and I used the stock antenna tpu mount just I used the top hole, much much better than factory design its so beautiful with caddx vista single antenna

      Thanks for sharing your setup. Ya that would work well. I wanted to keep the air unit at the time of making this video. I have since changed all the kwads over to the vista.

    good work, i have a dc 3 and a dc 5. bolth are costum builds. the dc3 is build with tyro 79 elektroniks and motors, and the dc 5 is a mamba stack 722s bluetooth and ummagawd v2 2306 motors 2150kv. but i put a vista with polar cam in it. just orderd the caddx air unit, for the dc 5 for better recordings. with bf 4.2 and rpm filter and stock pids, it runs like a beast. dont need to go full throtel, most of the time eaven in dives i use 50-75% throtel. and i smasched it a few times good into trees and ground, and i still have a complett spare frame. never brock a arm ore anything on it. 4 me its a flying tank. what would you say are the stock antennas as good as the true rc. im using the v2 goggles with stock antennas as well.

    It worked perfectly! I soldered just 1 to the board and everything was back to normal. Though I can see some issue down the road with the exposed gap for the air unit, maybe seal it with glue?
    Either way, you just saved me a lot of money! I ordered some mmcx so i can eventually fix it properly.
    Ahh thank you sir.

    By default Dji Air Unit is waterproof but in your case its not any more. By the way, you may shift Dji Air Unit to the back. In that case you do not need long cable any more.

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The air unit is not waterproof or even dust proof. In order to be waterproof it needs seals and covers on all openings, which it does not have (think of the bind button, the SD card slot, the space around the antenna connector, etc...).

    • @FLMan180
      @FLMan180 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea I was gonna say how in the hell you figure it’s water proof it’s got a giant holes on every side of it. I think you could have gotten your extra length from those antennas if you would have just de soldered the connectors instead of cutting them with the exact o knife excellent video !

    Hello had a question on how you removend the brass connector on the board before hardwiring the antennas. Did you use a solder Iron to heat it up or a heat gun.

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. I used a soldering iron with a large tip and a bit of solder already applied on the tip. The old connector came off really easily that way.

      @Mangorille  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks! I had this done with the original antenna as well with no negative impact to the range. Do you have any pictures of your solder points? Perhaps the solder did not make good contact or when the antenna was cut, there was a short between the inner and outer sheath. You do have to be very careful when cutting the antenna.

      I liked the mass centralization but agree that it causes a lot of other challenges. Having to use the SMA extension, being limited in stack height, etc... I do like the fact that you can take the whole top plate off and have the air unit, camera, and antenna come out together in one piece.
