I think we have an over inflated opinion of social media sometimes… just because we specifically watch videos, viewership is actually nothing compared to the real world. The internet will have you thinking everyone has an Hermes or Chanel in reality it’s not true… your average consumer of luxe goods doesn’t have a massive collection, buying and selling. They have 2/3 treasured bags. They don’t think their bag is outdated or not cool (like influencers love to tell us is the case). Social media is so warped

The big 3 (H,C,LV) bags since the 2000s:
    1. 4x-5x the price
    2. Quality issues (except H)
    3. Impossible to buy
    4. Poor customer service unless spending more than $10k per trip
    5. Cringey influencer content about “brand journeys,” mental breakdowns when not offered grails for special occasions
    6. Literally everyone else has them in every color and material imaginable
    7. Recognizable to everyone now, neon sign for thieves to follow you home
I don’t see the appeal anymore tbh

I feel that loud logos are definitely on the way out. I used to love my Chanel fashion jewellery but haven’t worn them in 3 years. Since the pandemic, the CC logo started to feel extremely tacky and dated. I prefer minimalist jewellery such as Cartier's d'Amour range or Tiffany’s diamonds by the yard range now. It also felt quite tone deaf to show off wealth while the world is literally dying and the global inequality worsening. The obscene price hikes by luxury brands also felt like they were milking the crisis, and I can't support them in good conscience.

In my opinion, with Birkins at least, they arent as exclusive as they used to be, not because they aren’t hard to get, you still have to jump through all the hoops to get a new one, but because people saw the rise in popularity, they started flooding the market with second hand Birkins. They saw everyone wanted one, and could sell them for a mint, and now every influencer with 20,000 followers has one because they did a couple brand deals that gave them enough money to afford one! I think though in about 5 years time they’ll be back to being rare and exclusive, because all these influencers are going to ruin the ones they have, and the secondary market isn’t going to have them readily available anymore.

I think Social Media DEFINITELY did a DISSERVICE to the Luxury industry as a whole. It’s turned it into Fast Fashion sort of and put too much spotlight on Houses such as Hermès and Goyard. Neither house is “Exclusive “ anymore. There also isn’t a “luxury experience “ anymore. It’s like get your 💩and go basically.

Agreed! I don't even have any social media ( besides watching YT) and I can say that Chanel, Dior, Gucci (logo) etc are definitely overexposed. The classic Chanel flap has been ruined by those influencers. Tacky now. Same with LV. I go vintage now so I'll have something different. Plus the price increases for new is insane. It's just a bag, no thanks. I still love my Fendi, I always will. I have a vintage black Gucci bag with the bamboo handles that I bought way back when Tom Ford was head designer. I'll always love it and wear it.

Great topic Sophie and I absolutely agree. I have stopped using social media but I work in luxury fashion retail (Fendi 🥰) which is like social media in live and I can tell you every third customer comes with a Chanel classic Flap, every fourth customer comes with a Birkin. As long as they have not a rare collectible version they are not special anymore to me. They don’t set you apart or make you stand out. I think luxury is something personal. Of course a black Chanel classic flap or black Hermès Birkin can feel very special to oneself due to what it took you to obtain it. But at one stage you grow out of classics in my opinion and holistically regarded start to realize that these bags are not that special. I would always recommend to go for a seasonal bag/color/shape that still has a classic appeal. Xx Christian

Yes, these platforms helped many to share their opinion and for us to check before buying. However somewhere this gave a crazy turn and it’s no longer genuine opinion if it’s something you haven’t use for months or years to talk about durability and timeless quality. It’s crazy the amount of people who get Hermes, just today I saw a make up artist with one and I thought but it was supposed to be super exclusive and even if I could afford it, I don’t like the model and I have to be mindful with my choices. Yet so many, many so called influencers, minor muas, tiktokers of less than 18 carry a Chanel and even with all my studies and degrees I don’t want to buy them cause it’s cheapen out in my eye. My mom has an eagle eye and notice when it’s not leather or elegant from miles, so she trained me. Now it’s so sad to hear these influencers saying for example one slept on plastic bags to buy their first Chanel bag, before her furniture…she laughed. Now due to TH-cam every other video is unpack a Chanel, Fendi, etc. and the most horrible shows from these luxury brands cause she has no taste….What a horrible message to send younger generations. At some point, living from social media might have an expiration date, one has to do more than this imho.

Birkins and Kelleys are hard to get. It’s well-documented that Hermes does not keep up with demand and is opening a workshop to make leather goods to meet demand. Availability also varies by boutique. I just went to the new Madison Ave Hermes flagship in NYC where another customer complained to me she was not offered a bag for the opening because they had none of quota bags. However, she was offered multiple quota bags this year because she spends a lot there. In California, particularly San Diego, the boutique has no such bountiful stock.
I recently bought a 24/24 Hermes bag and it seems like it’s even more rare that the Kelly, as even dedicated Hermes customers who shopped with the brand for years, don’t know what the bag looks like.
I bought it in Vegas and took it to the San Diego boutique two weeks later. My SA remarked that he only saw 5 of those bags in 4 years at the boutique. There is not much on social media on this bag either.
My bottom line is that Hermes makes high quality handmade goods, but some of them took off and some stay under the radar.
Of course I won’t turn down a B/K or Constance if offered, but there is so much to explore with Hermes that I’m not worried I don’t have those bags yet.

I still love mine, I will never leave the brand because nothing else compares. I also love Celine, Loewe and Gucci. The Celine classic bag is a timeless classic- I own 3. I will say I have also noticed a lot of these companies making the icons Birkin, Kelly etc but with no branding, so basically a dupe.

Sophie, I agree with all of your points in this video! I believe that social media has killed exclusivity with a lot of luxury items. Personally, I'm not on any other platform outside of YT, so I don't feel it as much as others. Also, I don't buy luxury items to be exclusive, it's simply because I love certain houses, appreciate craftsmanship, and things that I know I'll have for a very long time. I agree that the Birkin is for fashion and the Kelly is more classic. I love the Kelly, it's so beautiful to me. I have the Gucci 1955 Horsebit bag in white and it's one of my most favorite bags to carry...easy to get in/out of, looks great on shoulder or crossbody, priced well...one of Gucci's most underrated and best bags. Sometimes I think I should sell it as it doesn’t get used and probably now would be a good time if it’s getting popular…. Although I don’t like the hassle of trying to sell bags. The Gucci Horsebit is gorgeous!!! I particularly love the red one! It dates back to the 50s, it’s leather, no big logo, classic shape. It’s a banger! Just a watch-out that it can be a bit on the heavier side (as it’s full leather).

I still believe that hermes birkin and kelly are very hard to get, sometimes when I saw other people get their bags offer I was wondering what did I do wrong to not being offer one yet. I’ve been a regular customer at hermes and recently just managed to get my first kelly after 19 months of being on a wish list. So in three years I only got one birkin and one kelly from store. I don’t know how other have got offer left and right but for me it’s so hard just to get the entry level bag without having a pre spend.

Hermes bags are still hard to get. Consumption of social media gives a false sense that every one carries these luxury bags. In reality probably not 1% of the population carries a luxury bag. I love Celine too..the Celine le 16 is a beautiful substitute for the Kelly..imho..I have both and I almost prefer the Celine now because the opening is so easy. The Kelly and the Birkin are iconic, beautiful but impractical bags. I still love the Chanel classic flap. Great video as always.

    I agree.
The overflow of photos of the more "mythical" bags as e.g. Hermes Birkin - with the aura of "secrecy" around how hard it is to get it and the feeling of exclusivity the owner got by having it, is now gone.
One additional fact: as someone wrote in an earlier comment - so many influencers of all kind got these classic bags now and not all of the persons are specifically classy or elegant.
I would personally not like to be in the same "bag club" (so to say) as them.
Logomania: Think it can be a matter of evolution as high end bag owner - you start with a logomania bag and grow into the feeling of "less is more". When having a discrete logo bag, I think 'They who know, they know'.

The 'E' in the Evelyn is actually on the back of the bag, but people tend to wear it with the E showing.
I do not like huge logos at all, but I do really like the LV canvas logo bags (eg Speedy). I prefer the Reissue to the Classic Flap because the CC logo on the clasp of the classic is too out there for me. I would not buy an Hermes Birkin/Kelly because I am not prepared to spend that much on a bag. In my world, I rarely see Hermes bags so they have not lost exclusivity but I would rather spend the money on a month in Europe!
Thank you for the video! PS: What I was trying to say and doing it badly is that these items are common on social media and they probably are also fairly common in affluent areas, but in the normal world, less so. I see the occasional Neverful and the occasional Speedy and the occasional Chanel Classic, but they are not widely owned. Social media distorts our perceptions of how widely owned they are.

I'm on an Hermes journey for almost a year now and it is quite difficult to get one still. At least in Greece it is. I think the main issue with both Chanel and Hermes is that their bags are the most well known and sought after by the majority of the consumers because they are true classics and recognized by all. I think that another issue is the fakes that pop up everywhere and you cannot distinguish them from the real thing anymore

Found a vintage perfect condition Gianni Versace Sunburst (Birkin style) carryon bag that is really rare. It looks like a XXX Birkin. But it was made by Versace in the 90’s. It’s so beautiful with black leather with Greco print and a crossbody strap option. Hermés isn’t the only makers of Birkin. Gucci used to do it and Chanel has a Kelly version. Best part not many people have them.

It’s not that hard if you spend money with ur sales and the location of the store matters as well. So nothing really changed. Depending your spending amount, they offer you what u want or close to it. It’s not that complicated. Buy jewelry or watch is the fastest way.

Just purchased the Fendi Peekaboo ISeeU Petite 2 weeks ago when I was in London and can confirm it is absolutely stunning and timeless (and goes with most outfits)! I almost purchased a Chanel as this was my first designer bag purchase, but ultimately ended up with the Fendi bag because of wanting something more understated, low key, and high quality texture. I was shocked at how much Chanel bags were + how they felt in person at the store. I definitely agree that I social media has played somewhat a part in lowering interests in big logos - almost as if it has created somewhat a stereotype associated with each type of big logo bag and some of us want to escape that “idea” if that makes sense.

Right now I enjoy shopping on “the realreal”. I’ve noticed that Prada clothing seems to be deeply discounted as does Valentino - even gorgeous pierces in great shape are so much cheaper than retail. This is not the case to the same extent for LV, Chanel etc. Just wondering your thoughts? I don’t notice you discussing Valentino very much - wondering if you have a particular opinion about that brand that might also help explain resale values? Thank you with love from Canada!

I don't mind that luxury items are becoming more readily available on principle. I don't think items of quality should be so exclusive, and I like seeing people wearing these kinds of items, because it's a sign that they're doing well--at least in a financial sense. It's nice to see that they earn enough and are financially responsible enough to be able to treat themselves once in a while. It's nice to see imo, especially when you see someone wearing the truly most exclusive items, like the Chanel classic flap (although I am seeing it more and more after becoming more of the brand's heritage through youtubers such as yourself) or the Hermes Birkin, even if, yes, social media does paint a more saturated picture.
I'm more bothered or confused by the items that I see people wearing the most. In my area, it's a lot of Coach, Marc Jacobs, and LV, which are brands that I have personally never liked, especially Coach and LV, because they're so logo-heavy. It brings up a question of taste, and it's my opinion is that something truly luxurious is also understated and something that will grow with you and your sense of style. I see so many canvas bags with logos plastered all over them, and I mostly just think they're ugly, if I'm being honest 🙈 It's my opinion that logo-heavy items won't age as well as a leather bag with a single clean logo or decorative piece to identify the collection it's from, so I get a little disappointed and feel like the odd woman out when I don't see the kinds of items that I love being worn by others more often 😅

I think the whole process of buying Hermes is dung. It's arbitrary. It's determined by an SA and if they like you. You have to spend lots of money on other things to get a bag. I've heard if you go to Paris, your chances of getting what you want increases tenfold. And in leaving France, you get your sales tax back. You ought to do that if you want one. You are closer to Paris than I am. Getting the appointment is half the battle. I would kill to get the Queens purse. She always carried a handbag and the way she carried it was like a clue. It was moved certain places and that was her secret language to her assistants. I don't want an old lady purse but a nice one. Hermes should do what they do, make the bag how you want it and wait for it. You are guaranteed a bag on demand. My cousin joked me when I visited England. He asked me if I saw the Queen. He said you should get a job carrying the royal purse. And truth be told, I'd do it. LOL.

When I thought of Hermes years ago, I thought of old rich grandmas. They wore them to lunch. They were expensive but not sought after because the style (especially the Birkin) is not that practical or attractive. It’s all status and in the search of status every fashion influencer has obtained either the Birkjn or Kelly to keep up with the Joneses. I don’t think it to be edgy or original to have one. So basic. I actually lose respect when some influencers bring out these bags. What used to be a rare sight is so common that I literally went to Italy and made sure to buy from small unknown designers just to have something unknown and different. And the fun part: still super affordable in comparison. I think women looking for high quality purses should go to Milan and really enjoy the small designers making exquisite leather bags. This is where these designer bags are made anyway. Just without the logo prices. I brought 4 bags home this last trip.

I think social media overall tends to keep showing us more of what we're into, or what we search for... so to me, it feels like seeing a lot of something is rather an effect of the social media dynamics. It might feel like some items are everywhere but it doesn't necessarily translate into "real life" the same proportion, imo...Nevertheless it affects how people perceive brands, products and so on... it's a good topic to think about =)
