Why can't anyone understand that the storm that made her parents leave Fire Island was no ordinary storm. But it was actually an analogy to war. They were refugees.
I figured it was an analogy, but I think they could have made the concept that it was about war a tiny bit more clear. I honestly felt a bit confused over that. But didn’t exactly question it either. Idk how you’d make it more clear tho.

I don't think it showed the effects of the storm on the whole Firish community, it just made it look like it disproportionately affected Ember's mom and dad.
I know it may be a little comical but that scene where Bernie and Cinder tells immigration their names only to be assigned a new name was disturbingly close to home. Many migrants, like myself, end up getting/choosing a new name to try to assimilate better but it's at the risk of losing one's cultural identity and heritage. This movie is an ode to the migrant story but was sorely under-rated and underappreciated by those who couldn't relate.
For sure! I remember watching the Reel Rejects reaction to it and the guy was like i get it's funny but it's like 2 Italians showing up and being like "ehh i dunno how to say that..let's go with Mario and Luigi!" 😅 which was funny in itself but yknow..had a point hahah

k but that has nothing to do with racism in the real world so it doesnt matter. there are 0 places in a city or space where different races of people absolutely cannot go to or partake in or enjoy. you might THINK that's the case because of personal opinion of what MIGHT happen, but this analogy falls apart because the Fire people literally PHYSICALLY cannot do XYZ because of uncontrollable issues with how fire acts; it's completely no ones fault what Fire does without even trying. The reason this analogy doesnt work with real life is because human beings of all races can CHOOSE to act and behave in any kind of way and nothing is ever guaranteed. In fact, there are MANY stories of people of color going to places expecting full blown violent or verbal racism and receiving 0 and having an eye opening moment. The Fire people cant randomly not catch things on fire by chance. Don't pretend like racism is 100% fully happening in all scenarios all the time and no one has control over it. as a child of immigrant parents, this movie really spoke to me and made me so emotional. I related with Ember's struggles a lot. Always fun to watch your reactions, Seb
For those who cant relate, Amber grew up with an enourmous sense of responsibility and feeling like her parents gave and continue to give up literally everything to privide for her. After years of unintentional conditioning (for lack of a better word), she realises that what she believed she wanted and what she really wants are two different things and she feels forced to choose between two option 1) pursuing her dream and disappointing the family/ community/culture (live with guilt) or 2) forget about her dream and keep the family/community/ culture happy (live with regret).
The keyword here is that she *feels* this way, she cant help it. She knows she can say something about it, but in her mind, are the consequences worth it?
Ps: self expression, voicing your opinion to elders, etc is not something encouraged in many cultures. It may be changing nowadays with the age of the Internet but you might find that for those who this movie hit hardest, this was often not an option. She was lucky - her parents happened to be understanding.
At least this is how interpreted her point of view.
YES, that's exactly how I see it and why I relate to her so much, like when she says "The only way to pay back a Sacrifice that great is to Sacrifice yourself" and "You don't know what it's like to have parents who gave everything up for you" oof that hits hard

It’s interesting to see the different reactions to this movies based on people’s backgrounds and biases. It makes sense that you don’t understand Ember’s issue and why she can’t simply communicate what she truly wants, and how those same feelings are so touching for children of immigrant parents or non-white kids
Uh, white kid here and I'm a second-generation immigrant, with both my parents hailing from South Africa and Zimbabwe respectively. This story can be touching for us too because a lot of white kids are themselves immigrants (after all, approximately 21% of U.S. immigrants are white as of 2021), so there's no need to segregate us from everyone else.

It didn’t actually end up flopping. At first it underperformed, but thanks to word of mouth it ended up making a good box office by the end of its run.

Yeah I think you don't understand Ember's predicament here. When your parents sacrifice their life, leave their home and travel abroad to a strange new land that probably doesn't accept them like they were accepted at home, you as their child feel obligated to respect that sacrifice and follow through on the family's business. I know in western culture it may be easy to think 'just do what you want and its all good, if you tell your parents theyll be fine with it' you really don't understand eastern culture. To you this story may have seemed almost silly but to the rest of us who understand what a culture clash can do in a relationship this was a powerful movie
There's a chemical reaction called the Leidenfrost Effect where if something superheated touches a liquid and instantly vaporizes it, the steam it creates forms a thin layer between the two and insulates it. It's so strong that you can technically shove your water soaked handed into molten metal and you wont feel any heat for a few seconds (course you shouldnt actually do that)
Basically when they touched for the first time, that's the chemical reaction that's happening that helps them do that
a lot of people who aren't imigrants or part of an interracial couple like the parents of the writer of this movie really wouldn't get the struggles. I'm not both but i am a POC so i definitely get a lot of how ember is reacting towards her parents' needs. but i totally get why you wouldn't be able to connect with that and it's okay. still a fun reaction!!
Yeah. I'm not an immigrant but I'm still black. Even American people of color have these struggles. And regardless of the country you come from or what race you are, all interracial couples have these struggles. My boyfriend and I certainly do (he's white).
14:58 Ember doesn't burn her clothes because they're like fireplace curtains! Which are made from metal panels or mesh, like chainmail, sort of, and therefore they don't burn. If you look closely at her clothes and other Fire people's clothes, they look slightly metallic and they look like meshy chainmail or little geometric-shape panels linked together. And their formal attire is the same thing but with stained glass, so their light shines through and they look like ornate lanterns. Very functional/practical and stylish! (I really would LOVE to have Ember's purple hoodie, NGL...)
I’m a little annoyed that you missed or didn’t react to the most heartwarming parts of the film, or rather laughed it off more than actually taking it in. This was a beautiful piece of media

I think they were able to touch because of the steam separating them and not actually touching. And in the part where wade evaporated and didn't die , is because he was still water just in a different state of matter , gas .
They created that steam which is why Wade said we changed each other's chemistry which is true. Fire can stay aflame on water at a certain temperature without the water evaporating because both feed each other. There's a term for it too I just can't remember 😂

It wasn’t as bad as people thought but man this was a clear sign that the marketing was the main issue and I wish they focused more on the immigration story
Quick note, someone wasn’t paying attention; that’s not Wade’s dad, that’s his uncle. His dad died and he was jumping from job to job; that’s kinda what leads to them meeting
I swear, Ember and Wade are just perfect for each other in so many ways imaginable. Their love is just so powerful throughout this entire movie, when they hold hands and kiss, my heart literally melted. I was just in complete awe. One of the greatest couples I’ve seen, definitely one of my top favourites. Well done, Pixar! 100/10!!! ❤🔥💧❤
We need a sequel with them having a steam baby possibly, that would be amazing. Just showing how much more powerful Ember’s and Wade’s love for each other has become.
This story is told in a beautiful colorful phenomenon I love the colors of this movie so much
I wouldn't call what happened in Fireland "a bit of house damage." Dismissing that, another problem was Cinder being pregnant with Ember. It was more practical to move to a more modern city than staying in their little rural village.
26:56 I know it's right before a heart-breaking (and dam-breaking) moment, but Ember is LITERALLY the light in Wade's eyes, and she has been throughout the whole movie. I just love that symbolism and wanted to say that here.

Fire and Water can touch without fading away. It just depends on how much of a balance there is between the two. Or what material and the picture the fire is. Like magnesium and potassium fires can’t be put out with water. I think the key thing here is that they are both balanced with each other there for neither of them are harmed by it. He’s cold enough the not fully evaporate from her fire, and she’s hot enough to not be fully put out by his water.
I was pleasantly surprised from what I've seen about this movie, this is my first time seeing anything regarding it in terms of content within the film.

It is not nuanced at all. It is an objectively poorly written film and I have to yet to see a well-thought out defence as to why it is not a poorly written film.

23:02 Because Wade is made of water, the animators could use most of the principles of Squash-and-Stretch animation much more liberally with him than with another character who has a skeleton and skin. This was a good movie, showing different races and cultures. I believe fire and water supposed to be Mexican and white, but I'm not sure. E As for how they can mix, fire and water to get them make steam, so they could make steam babies, that would be like a whole new element.
They're Korean and white - though it makes sense to feel/see resemblances with any interracial couple

i went into this with no expectations, and was pleasantly surprised. it even made me cry at the end -- so touching. He did take some time to grown on me, but otherwise I loved it.

I think it's most unlikely for Pixar to make any follow-up to Elemental. This film is perfect, just the way it is. And we should cherish it as a stand-alone film so that it still remains a classic for future generations.

My crying trigger is the song Leavin’ On A Jet Plane. Doesn’t matter if it’s playing on TH-cam, the radio, my mom’s bathroom speaker, or if my mom is singing it. I cry a river every time. Ever since I was a tiny tot it’s had that affect on me and I’ve never understood why. Maybe cause my mom traveled a lot when I was growing up. I would lose the crying game for sure if anyone used that song on my turn to try not to cry.

ngl it kinda bothers me that he gave Ember so much crap when she'd get angry. if she COULD control her anger she would've done that from the beginning when she was practicing running the shop. I think the movie showing a relationship between someone who was raised to embrace and express all their emotions is Wade and Ember, who was raised being told that she WILL be the owner of the shop someday, which gave her no room to choose for herself (on top of the fact that it seems like she may have BPD, which would make it even harder to control her emotions). It's not her parents fault that she couldn't speak up because they didnt realize the pressure they put on her, but its also not hers for struggling with that pressure, she should work more on her anger but that comes with time. AND when Wade decided to confront her, right in the middle of the ceremony when she becomes the owner of the Fireplace, in front of everyone in firetown and her Dad who she was desperately trying not to disappoint? Wade knew of her struggles and anger and still made the mistake of doing that in front of EVERYONE. Thats a lot of pressure to put on her, i think ppl give Ember a harder time with getting angry easier bc shes a woman, bc nobody has given the dad much crap for HIS anger when he gets unreasonably angry about unnecessary things as well.
