I can confirm this works. I just did this exact process on my MX455. There was a small amount of grease/ink on the ribbon as this video shows. However, there was a lot more to clean on the back guide rail the printer cartridge carriage rides on. After cleaning the rail, all is well in our house again. Additional tip: it also pays to clean the paper feed rollers. I had an issue with my printer trying to feed in multiple pages simultaneously. After cleaning, my problem is solved.

Thanks for this video. After cleaning, you should still print the allignment paper (press and hold the stop button for 4 lights) and have it scanned (triangle on the top corner) so that your printing lines get alligned.
Spent hours trying to get my Canon Pixma G650 to align. It got stuck in the alignment process. My last shot was to try youtube. luckily i found this video, it is amazing how after cleaning the metal rail with a glass wipe tissue, the printer worked like a charm. amazing how simple it was.

I was completely skeptical, but this actually worked. I have a Canon TR4720 and I had done the head alignment and cleaning multiple times to no avail. There didn't even seem to be much residue or anything on the guide rail, but I cleaned it anyway with a wet-wipe. The problem disappeared immediately. Cool beans.

Awesome! Thank you! Congrats for give the credit to the original post and for share again. Just a precision. It is not necessary to remove the grease from the spool. It is enough to take a cotton swab smeared with alcohol and pass it over the black band (semi-translucent) that is on top.
I think this saved our printer going out with the trash today. Then it took a few sheets of paper to get the alignment back where it should have been. Just got one persistent blocked jet in the black now to try and unblock on our old Brother MFC 490CW, which has given great service up until a week or two back when the alignment problem arose.
