    This happened to me last week: I live in NYC and I was standing in the park with a friend who owns an Afghan Hound. Both dogs were on leash, but when a guy rode by on his bike the Hound jumped up and nipped him in the thigh as he was passing. The guy, stopped, looked back at us, then got off his bike to check his thigh for damage.
    I held both leashes while my friend went over to talk to the guy. When she came back she said she was shocked - she asked the guy if he was ok, and he pointed at my dog, shouting “that pit bull bit me!” My friend’s jaw dropped, and she said “It was the Afghan Hound - the pit bull had nothing to do with it!”
    The stigma is so strong that people can’t see reality past their bias. Meanwhile my pit bull is so sweet the guy could have ridden his bike right over my dog and my dog wouldn’t get aggressive, but he’s blamed anyway just for being present.

      I am so sorry you had such a devastating experience. Some humans can be ever so cruel and uneducated. That person was so quick to judge. What a sad way to go through life. Yes, sadly the stigma is so strong. I struggle to understand such ignorance. Pitbulls are one of the most docile and tender dogs. I feel sorry for those that will never get to experience such sweethearts. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦❤️🥰🥰

      @maargenbx1454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bohochic2459 It was maddening, but when I adopted my boi (it will be 5 years next month) I made a point of being very visible with him around town - now everyone knows him as an individual. So a bunch of us meet in the park with our dogs every morning (I have the only pit bull) and when the owner of the Afghan told the group what happened, everyone expressed disbelief, then in unison went to pet my dog and apologize to him! He has just been standing there minding his own business when all of a sudden 5 people were showering him with love at the same time. So he decided to milk it and roll over for belly rubs 😂
      The good news is that my boi is so well loved in the neighborhood. When people say how lucky I was to get “a good one”, I tell them that he’s like the overwhelming majority of “pit bulls” - it’s the ones that get vicious (often in reaction to past abuse or neglect) who are the outliers.

    • @Thomas-fg1ds
      @Thomas-fg1ds ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Definitely, I agree. I love dogs, I've rarely seen a really "bad" dog.
      Sadly, I've seen lots of definitely bad dog owners. The agressiveness of their dogs is a direct answer to the habots of their owners.
      Pitbulls aren't "bad by design". They need a responsible, loving and caring owner.
      Pirate and Asha are best example, how beautifull that works.
      Dogs are no fashion dummies one can place somewhere in the living room for showing off.
      They are living entities with a character, a soul and they have their needs.
      I beg everyone out there:
      Don't just go and buy a sweet little puppy.
      Think about it for a week, Remember it will grow bigger, it has needs you will have to fulfill.
      Think again. Is your house, apartment or whatever big enough? Do you have enough free time for your dog?
      Can you pay for food and if necessary a vet?
      And the most important point:
      Never, never ever go to a breeding mill because they are cheap.
      Look out for a reponsible breeder who can tell you what your new dog will ned.
      Or even better: Go to a shelter. There are really enough poor souls there wanting a home and a loving family.

    Yes! We need to make training your dog a cool trend or something so everyone will do it. I work with animals and my first job all my managers had pit bulls. Training is essential for any dog and especially for high energy ones. I've worked with amazing pit bulls and I've worked with awful ones. Owners can really make or ruin a dog, and some well-meaning people get these dogs and don't put any work into them and then therefore further the stereotype of "bad pit bulls". It makes me so mad, b/c they're the type of owner that would ruin any dog by their lack or training, leadership and lack of boundaries. Some many "covid puppies" (any breed) are now adult dogs that are nightmares to be around b/c of their lack of training and socialization. Obviously people and dogs can't be perfect but I commend anyone that even tries to train their dog!!

      A lot of the dogs you'll find at a rescue usually have some pit in them. Think the most common mix is a Labrador/pit mix. They're great dogs and sometimes have a humanlike personality, never seen it before with another breed yet(very smart dogs/love to learn). Backyard breeders have created a huge supply of rescues and they're usually the ones to get put down first. Really sad bc they're a great breed.

She loved my dad who was in his 80's. One time I kept her over the weekend while my niece went to a festival and it rained one night and Lola jumped on the sofa with me for safety and I ended having to spoon with this huge dog cause she was so frightening. My brother and Lola would do Micky D's drive through and both get a hamburger for a snack. Lola will always be missed.

    I'm a dog sitter/walker that has taken care of pits, rottweilers, dobermans, you know the "scary" breeds and also smaller breeds, the only dog that ever bit me was a chihuahua that bit me on the calf, that same dog also tried to pick a fight with a rottweiler. A family member at one time had a chihuahua and a German shepherd, the chihuahua used to mess with the shepherd. All of the breeds that people fear have been big sweet babies that would rather curl up in my lap and snuggle. I even sat for someone that had a pit and a cat, the cat used to snuggle with the pit in his dog bed. My sister rescued a pit that was one day away from being put down by the shelter, he's a big sweet couch potato.

    What we need to start to teach people is that it isn't the breed that causes aggression. It is the environment, the owners, and the training, or lack of training in some cases.
    Each dog should be treated as an individual. Some dogs will naturally be more aggressive no matter their breed. That sometimes comes down to environment, sometimes it comes down to the owners, or a mixture of the two.
    My dachshund that I use to have was normally very chill and relaxed. We had a very relaxed environment so anything that disturbed that would cause him to be on alert, especially since we lived at the end of a dead end street in the country. He only really got aggressive if someone tried messing with me when I was asleep. He was being protective while I slept.
    That is a situation where the environment and technically the owner were the reason for the aggression. He was reacting to someone trying to wake me up which he perceived as someone attacking me.
    We need to get people to start understanding things like this as it will go a long way into helping stop negative biases towards breeds like Pitties.

    I once met a pittie on a bus with the cutest face. She and her dad sat right behind the driver, and so many people were scared to even see her, they got in at the back door. They didn't care that she was so well behaved. At some point I actually went over there and made contact with her. She was so happy to get pets from sommeone other than her dad! She almost climbed into my lap right there and then, but obeyed immediately when I said "no". Too bad they had to get off two stops from there. To this day I think of her and it makes me smile. Whenever I walk my pit around town and people gasp or jump out the way, I literally look at them and say “stop acting like a pu**y, he’s more friendly than any human you know”.
      Some people say nothing back, some have smart remarks bc they feel offended I called them out for being soft served.
      Think of it this way, if someone’s scared of a pit bull, they can’t protect their family against any intruder.

Some people are legit scared of dogs in general-a phobia or a past traumatic experience-and if you have to walk within ankle biting distrance or you feel he could lunge up at any moment-these are total strangers-you can’t know their demeanor or the dog’s or the amount of training just getting on a bus. I would be surprised and nervous too.

I've met scared Pitties but never an aggressive one. In fact, the Doberman in our neighborhood is a shy big sucky baby and that shows that it's all on the owner on how the dog comes out. The only dog I have been bit by was a Frenchie that was trying to grab on to something as they fell off a couch. The Rottweiler that lived here wanted nothing but to sit on your lap and to be held like a baby. Cats can be aggressive too especially if they are declawed because you've taken away their way of telling you that they don't like something and are left with no choice but to bite. It all depends on the owner.

    • @ssr8555
      @ssr8555 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@AtillatheFun did you know that a lot of pittie accidents are actually caused by humans? Pitties are no more aggressive than any other dog breed, they just have a bad reputation which causes them to fall into the wrong hands. A lot of pitbulls and other bully dogs are owned by people who got them because of their reputation. They get pitties with the hope of having an aggressive dog, which causes them to not train the dog properly or even train it to be aggressive. A properly trained pittie is no more dangerous than any other dog breed.
      The reason many pittie attacks end badly is because they have extremely strong jaws, not because they are aggressive. A pittie bite is more fatal than for example a shitzu bite. It’s not about “natural aggression.” Pittie attacks are also more likely to get on the news BECAUSE of their reputation. Nobody cares about a golden retriever biting it’s owner. But everybody cares about a pittie biting it’s owner because they want to “prove” that the stereotype is correct.
      A lot of pittie accidents are also caused by the carelessness of humans. Many pittie news are about how “a pittie bit a child when the parents left for a few minutes.” Yeah, that’s on the parents. You should NEVER leave ANY dog alone with a small child. And in these situation we usually don’t even know what really happened for the dog to bite the child. Any dog will bite a child if the dog is getting bullied by the child.
      TL;DR the bad reputation that pitties have causes pitties to get more mistreated by their owners, which causes them to be more “aggressive.” They are not naturally aggressive, they are just badly trained.

    This pup has a good, caring owner. They aren't all like that. Not everyone trains, socializes, or even exercises common sense.
    The FIRST TIME my dog was attacked by a pitbull at the dog park, the pitbull was already in the park, and unbeknownst to me, had already been in three minor skirmishes with other dogs. I walked in, sat down on a bench, and my dog sat down beside me. The pitbull strolled up and seemed friendly enough, so I patted him on the head. My dog stood up to greet and sniff, like dogs do, and the pitbull jumped on him and locked his jaws around his throat, growling and shaking. It took a lot of effort to get him off of my dog. Miraculously, my dog's injuries were minor. What was the pitbull's owner doing during all of this? Nothing; just standing there. Turns out she had just gotten the pitbull from the animal rescue THAT DAY, joined the dog park, and threw him in there with about 20 other dogs without really knowing what would happen.
    Like I said, it's got a lot to do with the owner.

      i hope she doesn't have that dog anymore, because of her idiotic actions that dog couldve gotten animal control called on it and even worse been put down for that ladies poor decisions, you should never take a dog outside with other dogs or even people at that without knowing how theyd react first hand, you should always try to train the dog basic social skills first then see from AFAR how it reacts to another dog and then get them close to another dog while still being present to make sure nothing happens then if the dog is cool enough to play with other dogs without being aggressive in anyways then it can be free to play with supervision still of course, but throwing a freshly RESCUED dog into a dog park with others knowing that dog couldve had past trauma of some sort is begging for disaster, this is a wild guess but if the dog was rescued it was perhaps in dog fighting which couldve explained the sudden attack, again thats just my guess im prolly way off and the dog just hasnt been socialized enough or was prolly stressed from being freshly rescued but whatever the case the lady should get the dog taken from her

      I've always believed that. Dogs ARE a reflection of their owner. Bad people invaded the pitbull breed because of their muscle mass & strength & trained (tortured!) >their< pitbulls to be mean guard dogs & dogs to be feared when they were by their owner's side. The attacks of those aggressive dogs made the news & the grape vine & that's how they got their reputation for being mean. We should be angry that people with bad intentions stole this breed's reputation for being a goofy, loving dog & made so many afraid of them when it's not their fault! Same way the beautiful German Shepherd breed got their bad rep - as people saw the heroic actions they were trained to carry out in bringing down a suspect people stopped seeing >their< loving qualities as a pet & are afraid of this bread too. What people did/do the Doberman Pinscher is horrible too! I'm not sure of their past...but, people cut off their EARS & TAILS so they look lean & intimidating!! That's severely abusing that sweet animal for the owner's EGO & pleasure IMO! They call this "docking" - I guess to make it sound like a procedure they're "supposed to do" so they don't feel horrible & guilty for doing this to their PET who is totally & completely dependent on them! Look up a Doberman that hasn't had their ears & tails off - they look like a beautiful hound dog with their floppy ears & long tail!
      Sorry I've rambled on...but, people stealing an animal's reputation due to man's desire to control them & make >their< dog mean...is AWFUL. It's up to US to look down upon those ABUSIVE OWNERS....& NOT these poor loving, goofy, majestic dogs!

    As posted elsewhere, some of us have had terrifying experiences with pit bull type dogs. We had neighbors who were pretty careless about their pit bulls, who attacked my aging parents out on a walk. In a different neighborhood, a loose pit bull got between me and my 4-year old daughter, growling, barking, and acting very aggressively. By the size of him, he could have easily killed my daughter. When I complained, the owner said the dog was "protecting his property" even though we were on the sidewalk going to the bus stop to pick up my other child from school. These experiences last a long time! I realize these bad experiences are the owner's fault but those people at the dog park don't know which one you are, a good owner or a bad owner. I do feel bad for Pirate, though, as he looks like a total darling.

    • @selecta74
      @selecta74 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sad to hear. Sorry you had to go through those things. Some people really do want a "scary" dog, for whatever stupid reason. They will of course favor breeds that people are already afraid of, thereby creating a self-fulfilling prophecy. Same thing could of course potentially happen with any large breed, if the dog in question is forced into that role.

    • @emordnilap4747
      @emordnilap4747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That must have been terrifying. What a jerk, undoubtedly he encouraged his poor dog to be like that. Reminds me of a neighbour I had as a kid. He use to take his rottweiler to the park, and laugh when it growled at kids. He thought it made HIM tough, because his dog scared people. Everyone took great joy at his humiliation when he realized the symbol of his manhood was TERRIFIED of my tiny tabby.
      Unfortunately too many people who get pitbulls either don't know what they're doing, or WANT an aggressive dog. All dogs require strength, consistently, and kindness to lead them, and the majority of dog owners don't give them this.
      It's understandable people who aren't as knowledgeable about, or comfortable around dogs (or have had traumatic experiences) being more nervous around pitbulls, but in this case the people in the dog park were completely out of line. If you aren't comfortable around ALL breeds, you shouldn't be at a dog park. And if you can't even tell if a dog is freindly, you shouldn't have a dog. I don't care what kind, you are putting yourself, and others at risk if you can't read your animal. I had a freind as a teen who had a cockapoo named Rosalie. Sweetest thing, but scared of men she didn't know, and could be aggressive towards them. My friend was always careful, her mother, and grandmother, who she lived with, weren't. One day she was over at my place, and her mother needed to call a plumber. My friend would have shut Rosalie in a bedroom, her family didn't even bother to watch her. The plumber was kneeling under the sink, and Rosalie bit his ankle, destroying a tendon. The poor dog had to put down, and the poor man will walk with a limp, for LIFE, because of dog owners, who didn't understand dogs. Honestly, I'ld be worried other dogs in those dog parks.

      these breeds were bred to protect kids because of not only their strength but amazing disposition and loyalty. If more people would report bad owners and dog fighting, tho here in Canada don't here much of that and finally make breeding legitimate. The amount of dogs being bred from stock that has bad traits, or exploited traits is just a few reasons to do so.

      Yes but chihuahua cannot kill you or a child or another dog or cat within seconds. It is an animal and not human. Animals are unpredictable. Also owners assume people know how to act around dogs, some people have phobias , they would scream or jump around when a dog is approaching but even when a small attack would bite a leg it is nothing. I saw many bites from dogs and some severe and guess what , all of them were from friendly dogs. You should not expect people to be careful around your dog. Dogs that bite hard should be on leash always and with muzzle in crowded places .
