  • Gary goes over the new plan for the shop. We fill in the details and behind the scenes of taking down the hoop barn. How many slabs were hidden under the hoops? Does Bryson really take ALL his cans into the recycle? Watch the excitement build to making our new shop a reality :) We appreciate you! Hope you are having a great Holiday season ❤️

    it would be really neat to have a section of the barn dedicated to hold batteries and an inverter and then have solar panels outside that provide power for the apartment and the shop, with a switchover to utility power as needed. I think Bryson would have a ton of fun engineering that.

    • @MoondyneJoe
      @MoondyneJoe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      And an extra suggestion, you could make the solar panels on a tracking framework check out the channel
      "Life Uncontained" Spencer recently built a big solar mount and put 48 panels up on it, but in this case look at the way he adjusts the panels for correct solar orientation at each season. Very simple and cheap to make.
      Or Bryson could make a wind Turbine so they would have a hybrid system when the sun doesn't shine you can still create power I have one I brought 10 years ago still working well, that feeds into 2 x 12v agm 470 amp/h batteries outputing 24v to the 240v x Inverter as needed on that stand alone system I also have 2x 190w solar panels with 2 more to go up
      That is my second system
      My main is a 6.6kw grid tied system 😁

      that would be a $50,000 install to make enough power to do all that

    • @FrankGraffagnino
      @FrankGraffagnino 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@genghischuan4886 why? It doesn't have to power everything. Just reduce the amount you use from the utility.

    • @genghischuan4886
      @genghischuan4886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FrankGraffagnino you did hear everything that he want to set it up for right? You obviously have no working with machinery or tools experience on the power draws and how much you have to have for some of the things he wants to do. just for some of the things requires 3 phase conversion. Solar is not cheap when you have high power draw equipment to run. It requires heavy duty cycle invertors and transformers and anything worth its salt is NOT CHEAP AT ALL. not to mention the panels it will take to make the power. The battery bank alone will be minimum 10-20k

      @@genghischuan4886 I have a degree in electrical engineering. But maybe you just aren't reading what I said. I'm just proposing a fun solar project to power some things and have large things go to the utility as usual. Best of luck to you

    Make sure to lubricate all the joints on the skid steer, and check the hydraulic fluid! Basic maintenance saves a ton of money later! :) Also a small washer and dryer in the garage is awesome for not tracking muddy clothes through the house, I'd also say a shower, but you guys have the outdoor shower.

    The new shop is going to look amazing! Question: Will you have a painting room? It could not only be for storing your paints on shelves, but having space to let things dry, too. In the hoop barn you had a plastic protected area, but I'm thinking you'll need one in the future...

    • @sebell69

      the "painting room" could be "deployable" when needed and broken down and stored when not that way you get more out of the same space.

    On this week's episode of My Little Homestead. . ."Hoarders, the self-intervention".
    After years of keeping stuff because you know "I might be able to use that someday", our intrepid and plucky MLH family focus their efforts on a huge series of long-overdue tasks. They take $250 of aluminum cans to recycling, clean out the shed, empty and dismantle the hoop barn, throw away that old carpeting, and pull up some concrete foundation to start a new pile because you know "I might be able to use that someday".
    Along the way, they encounter a rat snake, learn what not to do with a skid-steer, and find the long-lost engine from the Mercedes.
    And of course they do it all themselves because MLH is all about the DIY. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's episode.
    Well done folks. 😃

    Since you have all the grandbabies that come over and future ones to look forward to, You should put a slide from the second story of the garage for them to play! Just think how tuckered out they would get running back up the stairs to get to the slide again! And a Playhouse cubby space tucked into the upstairs that has the slide top in it or near it. Maybe put a kid door from the upstairs area to the play area so it's accessible from inside or outside. You'd be even cooler Grandparents than you already are!

    Love that the hoop barn is gone!
    So looking forward to the new shop build. It will be a fabulous build. Love the design of it and it's placement. Gary, looking forward to your creative roof system on the apartment.
    I agree with a previous comment that you need a painting area. At least a paint booth. Also agree with having solar power for the apartment. While you're at it it won't cost that much more to have the solar power in the shop too. The inverter and batteries are the big expense. That would already be covered if you go solar on the apt. The extra (pre-owned) panels are relatively inexpensive. (They last for decades) Yes, you might have to have a bit of on grid power for some of the more robust equipment. Bonus is you, probably, can sell back your excess solar power.
    FYI, old broken concrete slabs are often called urbanite. When placed with the finished side down they look almost granite like.
    Edit: corrected auto- correct!

  • @proberts34
    @proberts34 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Gary, you might consider including a pretty large designated storage area, or attached building, in your plans for the future. Some thoughts about this include:
    ‣ Concrete floor to keep things out of the dirt and to keep rat snakes out.
    ‣ Shelves and bins for small and mid-sized items. Create an inventory mechanism, like paper taped to each bin, to be able to easily find items stored in the bins. Then when you add an item to a bin, add it to the paper and the same when removing items from bins.
    ‣ Shelves like they have at warehouse stores for storing a few pallets of stuff (like buckets of paint). Ooooo, then you can get one of those snazzy pallet lifts or at least a pallet jack for pallets stored on the floor.
    ‣ Storage racks for items like lumber and pipes.
    ‣ A way to store plywood to keep it from getting damaged.
    ‣ Other. I'm not sure what else you need to account for, so I'll leave that to you.

    With all the impressive, innovative construction and artistic accomplishments you have published, I did not expect to find your tearing down the hoop barn to be one of my favorites. It was well edited and told as a story, but that isn't the reason. Maybe because it shows a talent I identify with: constructive deconstruction. Very entertaining!! When you speed up the videos it often feels like real life in 2021 :)
    All your pets seem so well adjusted and abundantly loved.

    I use to work in a welding shop. There was an apartment above it. Do whatever is necessary to keep the odors/smoke/soot from rising into the apartment.

    That was exciting to see it all clean up and see how you were gonna lay it out for the new one I think that's really cool and it was fun watching it get taken down

    Around the 20 minute mark it dog barked. My 4 month old schnauzer puppy barked. My tabby's tail looked like a raccoon's tail as she began to search for the invading dog. Meanwhile, my Siamese was totally unphased. 4-legged fur babes keep things interesting. Btw, excellent job prepping for the takedown of the hoop barn. Who's apartment will be on the second floor of the new workshop? Is the family expanding again?

    Nice to see the first pass on the new shop design. I didn't know you planned on putting an apartment above it. I guess the roofs of the two small buildings will become balconies for the apartment.
    Once the building is complete, then will come numerous vids of building shelves, tables, benches, and accessories for the shop, not to mention the finish work and furnishing of the apartment. This thing will keep you guys in content for a whole year!
