If they were to engage a reengage colony with a supply of firepower, than it probably would've had it's full arsenal. Second, this was a weapons test by Weyland-Yutani. They wanted to see how well the Xenomorphs did against an armed and trained force, but at the same time did not want to see them wiped out. So, a squad was sent in instead of a full battalion, which most certainly would've annihilated the colony through sheer numbers and firepower.
Yeah to be honest, the USS Sulaco had a very bad record compared to all the other ships of the same class, look up the ALIENS Colonial Marines Technical Manual, and look up this ship's history, to make this short, the real reason it had so little crew to begin with is because it was a "Very.... Very unlucky ship" as it had a Docking Accident which is unheard of from the rest of the ships, killing a few and injuring several other's in the accident, it was also the only ship to take a direct hit from a Surface to Orbit Missile while on mission, so all in all, few crew would handle her cause of these reasons, don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure Wey-Yu wanted to see what would happen from a battle between the Xenos' and Colonial Marines.
Why didn't the ship have an actual crew? Someone's who took care of maintenance on the ship, medical and command? It didn't make sense to me that the whole shop was run totally automatic once it got close to its objective. It seemed like communication with someone on the ship would have been a great idea.

Also, having proper communication with the ship would've enabled the Marines to call down fire missions and again wipe out the Xenomorphs. The Company is scummy like that.
I can not see Burke acting alone in the deployment of a force so small in such a large vessel. Shit-ship or not I would imagine that it also had a substantial dollar attachment to it and I can't see Burke doing all of this alone, protecting such a large investment with so little, without someone higher up raising an eyebrow. However it all looks like Burke is alone in this, this looks like a super-fast half-assed decision made by anyone, regardless of who they are. I just can't imagine WY choosing to do this without using a better plan, surely they have whole think-tanks ready on a moments notice. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
In the Aliens vs Predator 2010 Video Game, one Predator ship wrecks a Marine ship in a few shots. It was a surprise attack because of the cloak sure, but it does show that it would only take a few shots to take one down.

Truly does makes you wonder what a human cruiser of the AVP verse would look like given this is what they have for a transport with some offensive capabilities slapped onto it.

Though honestly, I would not be surprised if Weyland-Yutani secretly designed and built a war fleet to face against the Yautja, just in case. Being the corporation that practically runs the space colonisation and exploration gives them quite the number of hiding places from the rest of the government.
Apparently the original design was spherical, I guess like a tiny Death Star, which would make sense for maximum weapon coverage. But it was decided that the sphere look didn't really work (either looked boring or was hard to shoot on screen) so they did a total redesign, taking a lot of inspiration from the USCM pulse rifle design.
That hero shot of the Sulaco approaching LB-426 Is one of my all time favourite practical effects…. Still remember seeing it at the premier and the whole audience letting out a quiet gasp at such a totally badass military ship…
Love it. The practicality of the design... I still - not for a moment - buy into the ship's autonomy to operate without a crew and simply at the direction of a Platoon (-) with Android. The LV426 mission was designed to fail specifically to retrieve impregnated crew or live samples and destroy the evidence. Poor Burke didn't realize he too was expendable.

What I want to kmow is, how can anybody thumbs down anything Spacedock puts out? Each one of these is quality work, I have seen every one of them. And because of the quality, I have skin in the game. I hope that one day we will get a to see a new Aliens movie. A planetary invasion with thousands of marines, hundreds of drop ships deploying APC's, USCM Tanks:-) and of course dozens of Conestoga Class Light Assault Carriers in orbit all fighting a massive xenomorph infestation. Just an idea you could make the movie a corporate conspiracy with Weyland Yutani where an experiment gone wrong on a massive scale unintentionally or purposefully also I was thinking maybe the aliens have a way to travel to different planets on there own, not sure how but any ideas to all. It's up to the USCM to fight off the aliens on one or more planets. I also would love to see different types of xenomorph aliens like the old toys back in the day, I remember having an alien queen with wings and having a snake alien when I was a kid, this would be the biggest Bug Hunt ever what do you all think.
It could hold a couple of thousand troops yet W-Y only allowed a skeleton crew, eight marines, and Ripley. How is it no one was suspicious of this. With the size of a colony, a crew this small would smell to me of minimizing "Loose Ends" to clean up.
Yeah from Ripley's report they probably though it was just one alien on the lose that had decimated the colony. Just clean the mess and have Burke retrieve some eggs from the horseshoe ship with minimum people involved.
Money. The Colonial Marine corps at the time was more or less WY hired muscle. A few years later or so the government shapes up and catches onto WY nonsense and the other mega corps. This is when the Colonial Marines actually become free more or less to actually do their job. Aliens Fire Team takes place during this period where WY doesn’t have such commanding influence over them.
And this is just a transport vessel imagine a full on space battleship, that might actually give the Yautja Warships (yeah I like AVP, sue me.) some trouble
If I recall in the AVP game on 360 the predator campaign has a scene where one of their ships fired on a ship of this class. 3 shots split the ship (Marlowe) in two pieces.
MrBailey218 to be fair the Yautja ship suddenly decloaked and fired on the Marlowe, I doubt they even knew what was going on before the Plasma blasts hit.
I wonder if it would make more tactical sense to camp out inside the APC on flat terrain rather than going back inside the compound and barricade themselves ??? Their dropship exploded when it crashed but it didn't hit the APC , right ? So they didn't walk to the compound but they piled into the APC and drove there despite the damage on it . And that thing had some impressive weaponry on it . Is it smarter to just stay inside it and use its weapons ?
Been wanting to see this ship done. Nice to have some actual information about it. I adapted the design for my own sci-fi short stories along with the troop ships from Starship Troopers.

The 2,000 crew compliment and load-out for the Sulaco still works in the confines of Aliens, if Colonial Marines protocol was to keep other troops effectively in hyper-sleep while Gorman's team was sent down to do recon etc with the idea that if shit went sideways a larger force would be awakened. The downed transmitter and hostile atmosphere could still explain why they couldn't just call for another team to be awakened to rescue them or the time needed for a team to be awakened wouldn't have been quick enough with the damaged reactor about to go critical.

The M5-77 APC I seriously started one day to sketch out how to build one. Talk about bad ass driving one down the road. Can you imagine turning a corner in your Camry and coming face to face with one? lol Imagine going into the DOT to register it. Does it pass passenger protection requirements? "yes, it is equipped with supplemental restraints for all passengers and is constructed of 5/16" armor plates. Theft deterrents? "yes 5.56 mm gatling gun and a 120 mm pulse cannon". Braking? 36" diameter rotors at each wheel with 14 piston calipers. I designed it with 4 wheel steering so you could get around city streets.
Never could figure out why there were only eight marines plus Paul Reiser and and Weaver If they could send 2000 plus multiple APC's, why didn't they? Seems like a weak loadout for a multi million mile journey. Better no have and not need.

Supposedly to check out why a colony which had fallen off the net.And a certain corporation probably wanted to keep it discrete. the fact Burke sort of forgot to mention the whole acid dripping chest bursting parasite thing to anyone might have been a factor as well
Probably because nobody believed Ripley that there were any aliens involved. They thought it was "probably just a downed transmitter" so they sent the bare minimum required stipulated in the contract. The only one who thought Ripley had any credibility was Carter Burke and he had a vested interest in sending as few people as possible. Remember his line about "nobody gets any percentages" when Ripley suggests notifying the Company?
Acording to old canon (destroyed by recent comix and anihilated by Alien: Fassbender) Sulaco was due to dry dock after being hit by asat missile during space op. So WL pull their strings in Space Command and sent expendable team on expendable ship.
MT Silver Still, makez you wonder how Aliens would have played out with even half that number. *Six squad recon group goes in to search Hadley's Hope, one to secure Operations (Ripleys group) two to search the colonists habitats, two on reserve and the last to keep the dropship(s) secure. Everything goes the way it originally did up to the point where Ripleys group gets control of operations. A reserve squad is sent to the atmospheric processor rather than Ripleys as her group is better positioned holding that location. Of course, the reserve squad gets attacked by the Xenomorphs. It dosn't matter if they survive or get away. Ripleys tells marines to nuke the colony, as the habitat and possibly the drop squads get attacked as well. In this scenario at least, the dropships either survive or are lost but are replaced by backup crews quickly. Despite most squads getting attacked, most of them reach the dropships and are rescued due to their combined numbers warding off the xenos attack of attrition. From there, I think what happens would depend on the kind of person who is commanding the overall operation. Either the marines listen to Ripley and nuke the colony, or try to retake it and attempt to rescue the abducted colonists and any marines that likely got lost from the earlier attack, (either out of duty/loyalty or arrogance) Needless to say, option 2 wouldn't have gone well.
Great, now build it in Space Engineers. You would need shields mod to counter rammers however, as well as a couple spherical gravity generators to counter artificial gravity cannons shooting steel plates at you. Turn a couple of the dropships into defense drones to patrol a perimeter while you're offline.

The Aliens Colonial Marines, Babylon 5's Earth Force, and The Expanse ships could all coexist within the same universe. Their utilitarian beauty, and all-around chunky badass aesthetic are quite appealing. They all look like giant flying guns.

There are some discrepancies between descriptions of such vessel. For example the ship is described to be 385 meters long in the US Colonial Marines Field Manual... But in the Alien RPG guide it's written that the ship is 731 meters long. What is the correct dimension? I mean if the Field Manual is correct, the Conestoga-class is just a bunch of meters longer than the USCSS Nostromo... a CM-88B "Bison" M-class freighter... It's highly unlikely that the Conestoga is so... "little". Realistically the second dimension is much more likely. At least if you ask me.

I disagree with the 385 meter length, myself - I haven't seen official numbers confirm it as exactly 385. The Colonial Marine Tech Manual states it's 385+ - and Jan, the Czech fellow whose footage you used, did do their own calculations and came out to over 700 meters in length. Nitpick aside, love to see the Conestoga getting some of the spotlight!
boy I bet space dock hates the design, seeing that it's superbly impractical in many ways, but it is pretty cool, it'd be better better if he did something from the UC though because There's more ships to choose from
So, this could hold thousands of troops. Yet a military organization decided to use it to transport one squad of marines. Plus only two drop-ships to a planet that could harbor a potentially dangerous creature. Mind you one who's capable of using the inhabitants of said colony as incubators for even more dangerous members of it's own species. Oh, and the squad was led by one of the most inexperienced commanders in the marines. Just to add insult to injury let's bring two civilians into the combat zone as advisers. One who has seen one of said creature kill her crew and force her to destroy a civilian freighter.
Someone forgot to mention the possible presence of xenomorphs. Up to that point, they were just the ravings of a disgraced Third officer. the only one who took her serious was Burke who had reasons to keep it quiet.
Something I've noticed in most, if not all of James Cameron's films; organized military is at best inept, but often corrupt. In this case, the military were just sell-outs to "Big Business" and their inept deployment was at the design of their string-pullers
Everybody seems to either forget or simply not understand that this was chiefly Carter Burke's fault. He read Ripley's report on the Juggernaut discovery on LV-426 and then notified the colonial administrator at Hadley's Hope. Newt's family went to that grid reference and radioed back to the colonial HQ to confirm that they'd get salvage rights on whatever it was that they found. Well, Newt's father got hit with a facehugger and then soon, the entire colony goes dark. Now Weyland-Yutani spent a lot of time and effort making Ripley look like she's gone crazy, either to pin the blame of the loss of the Nostromo on her or to suppress her so that she doesn't go to their competitors. She was in hypersleep for over five decades after all. But who is it that reaches out to Ripley when Hadley's Hope goes dark? It was Burke. Who organized the mission and was effectively their mission controller? Burke. Who did Ripley confront when she found the corporate memo signed by Burke himself, requesting that someone head out to the Juggernaut's coordinates in spite of the great danger that she warned about? Burke. What did Ripley say Burke tried to do? Have Ripley and Newt impregnated then hypothesized that he would sabotage their hypersleep chambers. He'd have Ripley and Newt frozen to get them past ICC quarantine and then can make up any story he wanted regarding the Marines. Half a platoon of Marines is more manageable than an entire company of Marines and an increased corporate presence, something that he openly admits to Ripley when she confronted him. He wanted to claim the prize for himself so he could get his big promotion and his fancy stock options. Burke intentionally made sure that he kept this small and quiet, otherwise he would have lost his competitive edge and someone else could have taken the derelict and its secrets away from him.
And this makes perfect sense, because Cameron was taking the concept of corporate ineptitude, cranking it up to 11, and then shoving it down our throats. While the ICC may have served as some kind of oversight, we know that accessing Network and transmitting FTL data was a very expensive ordeal. So when you're dealing with a corporation that has assets scattered through dozens or even hundreds of solar systems and space stations spread across such an expanse, there's no way Weyland-Yutani would be able to run a tight ship, so to speak. And this is also reflected in the attitude that the Marines had. James Cameron has even specifically stated that he wanted people to understand that the authorities weren't taking any of this seriously, including the military. Then add conniving corporate cut-throats to the mix who have a flagrant disregard for other people's safety (a paradigm introduced in Alien,) and you have Aliens.
Yes, Burke was an ass, who shouldn't have any command privilege. Gets worse if the scale to the dropship hatch is correct, indicating Sulaco is over 700 metres long...

I'm a startrek, Stargate, star war's fan but the Aliens universe has a more realistic feel to it. the US Sulaco is my favorite ship of all it's not the most advanced or fastest nor is it the most heavily armed out if all sci-fi (Or though the Predators destroyed this very ship with two shots lol) but it has a more practical feel for some reason.

I hope that one day we will get a to see a new Aliens movie. A planetary invasion with thousands of marines, hundreds of drop ships deploying APC's, USCM Tanks:-) and of course dozens of Conestoga Class Light Assault Carriers in orbit all fighting a massive xenomorph infestation. Just an idea you could make the movie a corporate conspiracy with Weyland Yutani where an experiment gone wrong on a massive scale unintentionally or purposefully also I was thinking maybe the aliens have a way to travel to different planets on there own, not sure how but any ideas to all. It's up to the USCM to fight off the aliens on one or more planets. I also would love to see different types of xenomorph aliens like the old toys back in the day, I remember having an alien queen with wings and having a snake alien when I was a kid, this would be the biggest Bug Hunt ever what do you all think.

I get a kick out of how the Conestoga and Bougainville class ships have a very M42A profile. Like Galactus could use one as a battle rifle.
It could hold a couple of thousand troops yet W-Y only allowed a skeleton crew, eight marines, and Ripley. How is it no one was suspicious of this. With the size of a colony, a crew this small would smell to me of minimizing "Loose Ends" to clean up.

Yeah from Ripley's report they probably though it was just one alien on the lose that had decimated the colony. Just clean the mess and have Burke retrieve some eggs from the horseshoe ship with minimum people involved.
Money. The Colonial Marine corps at the time was more or less WY hired muscle. A few years later or so the government shapes up and catches onto WY nonsense and the other mega corps. This is when the Colonial Marines actually become free more or less to actually do their job.
Aliens Fire Team takes place during this period where WY doesn’t have such commanding influence over them.

If I recall in the AVP game on 360 the predator campaign has a scene where one of their ships fired on a ship of this class. 3 shots split the ship (Marlowe) in two pieces.
MrBailey218 to be fair the Yautja ship suddenly decloaked and fired on the Marlowe, I doubt they even knew what was going on before the Plasma blasts hit.

Their dropship exploded when it crashed but it didn't hit the APC , right ?
So they didn't walk to the compound but they piled into the APC and drove there despite the damage on it .

The 2,000 crew compliment and load-out for the Sulaco still works in the confines of Aliens, if Colonial Marines protocol was to keep other troops effectively in hyper-sleep while Gorman's team was sent down to do recon etc with the idea that if shit went sideways a larger force would be awakened. The downed transmitter and hostile atmosphere could still explain why they couldn't just call for another team to be awakened to rescue them or the time needed for a team to be awakened wouldn't have been quick enough with the damaged reactor about to go critical.

The M5-77 APC I seriously started one day to sketch out how to build one. Talk about bad ass driving one down the road. Can you imagine turning a corner in your Camry and coming face to face with one? lol

Does it pass passenger protection requirements? "yes, it is equipped with supplemental restraints for all passengers and is constructed of 5/16" armor plates.

Braking? 36" diameter rotors at each wheel with 14 piston calipers.
I designed it with 4 wheel steering so you could get around city streets.

Never could figure out why there were only eight marines plus Paul Reiser and and Weaver If they could send 2000 plus multiple APC's, why didn't they? Seems like a weak loadout for a multi million mile journey. Better no have and not need.

It was a low-profile/low priority mission. Supposedly to check out why a colony which had fallen off the net.And a certain corporation probably wanted to keep it discrete.

Probably because nobody believed Ripley that there were any aliens involved. They thought it was "probably just a downed transmitter" so they sent the bare minimum required stipulated in the contract. The only one who thought Ripley had any credibility was Carter Burke and he had a vested interest in sending as few people as possible. Remember his line about "nobody gets any percentages" when Ripley suggests notifying the Company?
Acording to old canon (destroyed by recent comix and anihilated by Alien: Fassbender) Sulaco was due to dry dock after being hit by asat missile during space op. So WL pull their strings in Space Command and sent expendable team on expendable ship.
MT Silver Still, makez you wonder how Aliens would have played out with even half that number.
*Six squad recon group goes in to search Hadley's Hope, one to secure Operations (Ripleys group) two to search the colonists habitats, two on reserve and the last to keep the dropship(s) secure.
Everything goes the way it originally did up to the point where Ripleys group gets control of operations. A reserve squad is sent to the atmospheric processor rather than Ripleys as her group is better positioned holding that location. Of course, the reserve squad gets attacked by the Xenomorphs. It dosn't matter if they survive or get away. Ripleys tells marines to nuke the colony, as the habitat and possibly the drop squads get attacked as well.
In this scenario at least, the dropships either survive or are lost but are replaced by backup crews quickly. Despite most squads getting attacked, most of them reach the dropships and are rescued due to their combined numbers warding off the xenos attack of attrition.
From there, I think what happens would depend on the kind of person who is commanding the overall operation. Either the marines listen to Ripley and nuke the colony, or try to retake it and attempt to rescue the abducted colonists and any marines that likely got lost from the earlier attack, (either out of duty/loyalty or arrogance)
Needless to say, option 2 wouldn't have gone well.

Great, now build it in Space Engineers. You would need shields mod to counter rammers however, as well as a couple spherical gravity generators to counter artificial gravity cannons shooting steel plates at you. Turn a couple of the dropships into defense drones to patrol a perimeter while you're offline.

The Aliens Colonial Marines, Babylon 5's Earth Force, and The Expanse ships could all coexist within the same universe.
Their utilitarian beauty, and all-around chunky badass aesthetic are quite appealing. They all look like giant flying guns.

There are some discrepancies between descriptions of such vessel.
For example the ship is described to be 385 meters long in the US Colonial Marines Field Manual...
But in the Alien RPG guide it's written that the ship is 731 meters long.
What is the correct dimension?
I mean if the Field Manual is correct, the Conestoga-class is just a bunch of meters longer than the USCSS Nostromo... a CM-88B "Bison" M-class freighter...
It's highly unlikely that the Conestoga is so... "little".
Realistically the second dimension is much more likely. At least if you ask me.

The Sulaco only had as few scenes on the screen. But had a bit more in the games even tho it made no sense at the time.

I disagree with the 385 meter length, myself - I haven't seen official numbers confirm it as exactly 385. The Colonial Marine Tech Manual states it's 385+ - and Jan, the Czech fellow whose footage you used, did do their own calculations and came out to over 700 meters in length.
Nitpick aside, love to see the Conestoga getting some of the spotlight!

So, this could hold thousands of troops. Yet a military organization decided to use it to transport one squad of marines. Plus only two drop-ships to a planet that could harbor a potentially dangerous creature. Mind you one who's capable of using the inhabitants of said colony as incubators for even more dangerous members of it's own species. Oh, and the squad was led by one of the most inexperienced commanders in the marines. Just to add insult to injury let's bring two civilians into the combat zone as advisers. One who has seen one of said creature kill her crew and force her to destroy a civilian freighter.
Someone forgot to mention the possible presence of xenomorphs. Up to that point, they were just the ravings of a disgraced Third officer. the only one who took her serious was Burke who had reasons to keep it quiet.
Something I've noticed in most, if not all of James Cameron's films; organized military is at best inept, but often corrupt. In this case, the military were just sell-outs to "Big Business" and their inept deployment was at the design of their string-pullers
Everybody seems to either forget or simply not understand that this was chiefly Carter Burke's fault. He read Ripley's report on the Juggernaut discovery on LV-426 and then notified the colonial administrator at Hadley's Hope. Newt's family went to that grid reference and radioed back to the colonial HQ to confirm that they'd get salvage rights on whatever it was that they found. Well, Newt's father got hit with a facehugger and then soon, the entire colony goes dark. Now Weyland-Yutani spent a lot of time and effort making Ripley look like she's gone crazy, either to pin the blame of the loss of the Nostromo on her or to suppress her so that she doesn't go to their competitors. She was in hypersleep for over five decades after all. But who is it that reaches out to Ripley when Hadley's Hope goes dark? It was Burke. Who organized the mission and was effectively their mission controller? Burke. Who did Ripley confront when she found the corporate memo signed by Burke himself, requesting that someone head out to the Juggernaut's coordinates in spite of the great danger that she warned about? Burke. What did Ripley say Burke tried to do? Have Ripley and Newt impregnated then hypothesized that he would sabotage their hypersleep chambers. He'd have Ripley and Newt frozen to get them past ICC quarantine and then can make up any story he wanted regarding the Marines. Half a platoon of Marines is more manageable than an entire company of Marines and an increased corporate presence, something that he openly admits to Ripley when she confronted him. He wanted to claim the prize for himself so he could get his big promotion and his fancy stock options. Burke intentionally made sure that he kept this small and quiet, otherwise he would have lost his competitive edge and someone else could have taken the derelict and its secrets away from him.
And this makes perfect sense, because Cameron was taking the concept of corporate ineptitude, cranking it up to 11, and then shoving it down our throats. While the ICC may have served as some kind of oversight, we know that accessing Network and transmitting FTL data was a very expensive ordeal. So when you're dealing with a corporation that has assets scattered through dozens or even hundreds of solar systems and space stations spread across such an expanse, there's no way Weyland-Yutani would be able to run a tight ship, so to speak. And this is also reflected in the attitude that the Marines had. James Cameron has even specifically stated that he wanted people to understand that the authorities weren't taking any of this seriously, including the military. Then add conniving corporate cut-throats to the mix who have a flagrant disregard for other people's safety (a paradigm introduced in Alien,) and you have Aliens.

I'm a startrek, Stargate, star war's fan but the Aliens universe has a more realistic feel to it. the US Sulaco is my favorite ship of all it's not the most advanced or fastest nor is it the most heavily armed out if all sci-fi (Or though the Predators destroyed this very ship with two shots lol) but it has a more practical feel for some reason.
Agreed. Aliens IS more realistic compared to other mainstream franchises. If you want EVEN MORE realism while still being a "space opera" I would high suggest the book series Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds, in the RS universe FTL is impossible (or at least SO incredibly dangerous that NOBODY is willing to use it, whoever presses the "Fuck Einstein" button gets DELETED from existence) Instead humanity travels the stars in GIGANTIC ships called Lighthuggers that get within kissing distance of lightspeed.
