A lot of people don't know that Butterfly is a very hard song to sing. A lot of singers wouldn't be able to sing that song in the same range and key that Mariah does.

MusicBlue22 she was.going through a battle with her label/ex husband at the time. they gave this song and butterfly(the song) limited release..making it hard to reach #1. if it werent for her own label(husband) trying to sabotage her..her song butterfly at least would have hit number one.
Christopher Ducati well true...her label definitely didnt like what she was saying in the( butterfly) song..it was written about tommy and her..so they definitely tried harder to stop that one from going number one..but i guarentee had it been released and pushed with normal label support..it would have hit #1 no doubt

I hear the rasp kicking in and I can see a few of the stylistic choices she made. Very interesting but, nonetheless, a delight to the ears.
This the era she started using more of her whispery register but I really love it when she sings in her full voice as it's healthier and she has a lovely tone here.

She was very skinny petite daydream era, I feel she blossomed around butterfly era to #1s she's always stayed beautiful regardless though IMO. The video on TH-cam someone posted when she visited Australia in late 90s and was a guest on HEY HEY ITS SATURDAY! When I watched it, it was evidence of how unbelievably beautiful she was without air brushing or make up and over done hair.... She really is quite flawless in the looks. You only have to see that video to have an opinion
