Another tip: I stumbled upon this tidbit when I found the little plastic tag that came with the plant… On the back it stated that this type of plant is extremely sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, both of which are in our tap water. My plant had really been struggling, with the leaves browning and getting crispy. I removed the dead/dying leaves and began watering with distilled water, and she came back to life!
I had a similar experience. We switched from basic well water to water softener treated water. My plants were dying! Now I keep distilled water for them and they're much happier!
I had the same issue, and not just with this plant - those chemicals aren’t good for any plant. I have well water, and to soften it, we add salt crystals, and that stuff is so bad for plants. I was using spring water, but had problems with that too, so am now using distilled.
As someone that plants die when they even think they are coming home with me, I've been so worried about the green prayer that's now in my office with me. Thanks so much for this great video ♥ I'm looking forward to taking care of Hades and hope he grows well =w=
In a small village nestled in the mountains of ancient Mesopotamia, there was a healer who was renowned for her ability to cure the sick and bring life back to wilting plants. The villagers called her the "plant witch," as it seemed that she had a special bond with the natural world and could command the plants to grow and thrive. One day, a young boy brought her a small, delicate plant with bright green leaves that seemed to shimmer in the sunlight. The boy had found the plant growing on the side of a rocky cliff, and he believed that it had special powers. The healer took the plant and examined it closely. She had never seen anything like it before, and she was immediately struck by its beauty. She placed the plant in a special pot and tended to it carefully, watering it and tending to its every need. As the days passed, the healer noticed that the plant seemed to have a special energy about it. It seemed to thrive even in the most difficult of circumstances, and it seemed to bring life and vitality to the other plants around it. The healer began to experiment with using the plant to heal her patients. She brewed teas from its leaves and applied its extract to cuts and wounds, and she found that it had a miraculous ability to speed up the healing process and reduce pain. Word of the plant's medicinal properties spread far and wide, and soon people came from all over the region to seek out the healer and her miraculous plant. And so, the prayer plant became known as the "healer's plant," and it was used to bring health and vitality to all those who used it.
Wonderful! Thank you. A friend gave me a maranta and I love it. I live in Florida and it was on my screened porch with low to medium indirect light and it loved it for two years. I was away recently and it dried out too much as well as surprisingly cold temperatures. It made it but some of the branches died. I've been fussing with it and had no idea how do save her. I appreciate this video, very informative and detailed. I'm going to propagate it in water then leca immediately. Thank you.
Your Maranta is GORGEOUS!! I've finally learned to care for my Maranta and it's been getting these long, thin stalks with the tiniest and daintiest, light lilac flowers that remind me of Orchids, have yours done that? I was shocked because I never knew they produced flowers!!❤️🥰
Got one for my leopard geckos terrarium, I was already going to use a drainage layer and a lighter soil, but I’ll be moving it to the humid side. Thanks!
Hi. Great Vidio. I just would like to say my maranta grew like crazy, blooms as well during the heatwave we had the summer gone by here in the UK. Temp was around 90° average I think and humidity also very high, like 75- 85 average. Was about three feet in an east facing window. The previous winter, which was the first winter I had it, I lost one half of the side bush which I think was due to the cold and draught from the window. Ive now put it in a clear greenhouse thingy, temp is average of 18° atm. Looks like it's doing ok and has no more yellowing leaves which had started to happen when it got colder and I might have overwatered. Your Vidios are so much help and I love your personality. Thanks so much for making these and sorry for long comment.
Thank you so much for your informative video. The tips you provided and hints that the plant is stressed, i.e. not in favorable conditions, helped immensely. I've been abusing my prayer plant in error. Okay. I'm off to rescue my prayer plant. Thanks again.

Now it is SO skinny and leggy and the few leaves it has have gone pale. I've moved it to indirect sunlight and there is now some new growth coming. Thanks to you its currently having a spa day under my humidifier 😍. It must think its Christmas🤣. No idea how I can cure the leggyness though without propogating which will mean just two stems to propogate and none of the initial roots remaining which terrifies me. Will be so sad to lose it.😱

Your videos are so informative and well put together. I'm learning so much. I think this is my 7th video I've watched. You're so chill! Do you have one on Peacock plants? Thx!
Aww thank you very much! I'm so glad you're enjoying them :) I don't have a video specifically about peacock plants but I do have a general calathea care video that would likely help

Hi. Thank you for this video. Mine is just getting smaller and smaller leaves. It is placed at 50cm of a south window, could it be too much light for it ?
Please can you do a video about growing things in LECA & hydroponics ( if you haven't already, can't find anything if so 🤔) As I've bought a bag of LECA and going to be trialing some propagations. 👍
I needed this video 😂 I have 3 variegated maranta cuttings in plastic bags at the moment for that humidity hoping they will develop 3 chances right 😂😂🤣, I think I need a better humidifier though I have a cool mist one I think 😂🤣 and it uses tap water which they don't like, When I transition them if they develope will this humidifier be ok? Or would they prefer a warm mist one?
Ooh super exciting! I really want a variegated one! Cool mist would be fine as long as the air temperatures aren't too low. Tap water in a humidifier shouldn't matter too much as it's water vapour that has evaporated out all the hard water stuff! Good luck :)
@@GoodGrowing I'm glad 🤗🤗 just not happening though the cuttings are dying but that's the thing with cuttings it's never 100% they will grow praying for a miracle though 😂😂🤣🤣, I agree with you they're so gorgeous that and the lemon lime maranta I love but in the UK they're really scarse to come across, like the variegated one seems more in abundance.
My prayer plant closes during the day and opens at night. It has a nice place close to light but not in direct sunlight. Is there something I should change?
Great video! I might try my maranta in semi hydro using perlite instead of leca. I think leca might be too harsh on the fine roots. I'm wondering if the small pieces of perlite might hold the roots better with less gaps to allow the roots to dry out. Just a theory. Experiment time!
My green prayer plant is so droopy looking (when I purchased it, it was almost dead). The leafs are like falling really low, not sure if they need deeper soil. One just turned yellow too
Curious if you use filtered or tap water on the maranta? I try to remember to do them the same time as the calathea, but once or twice i have forgotten and they get grotty London tap water.... constantly waiting for them to freak out when it happens
I do just use tap water (usually that's sat out over night) and I haven't had any issues with it. I don't think they're quite as picky about water as calatheas are
I personally use liquid gold leaf, only available in the UK. But any houseplant specific fertiliser would do. As for the yellow spots, it’s tough to know without seeing them. Feel free to shoot me a picture over on IG
Hi Emma! I have a question about propagating this beautiful plant! My maranta is getting so full that one node is holding about five leaves and I see that it is weighing that branch down. Should I propagate this node or is it a watering issue?
You can defo propagate this node! As they grow longer vines, they will trail down a bit because of the weight. So you can prune it and prop to keep it standing tall or let it trail down. Up to you!
My red maranta does go up at night but in the day it droops so far it’s practically vertical. It sits about 2 metres back from a south facing window with no direct light and its on a pebble tray for humidity, not sure what I’m doing wrong 🤷🏼♀️
I have just acquired a red veined prayer plant from my grandfather and it had some pothos that grew into it because they were put close together and my grandfather didn’t think to keep them from growing together. Sooo... I have pothos vines/roots in the same pot with my prayer plant. After watching this video I have a few questions. 1) should I try to separate the maranta from the pothos plants that have taken over in its pot?. 2) if the answer to question 1 is yes.... then what is the safest way to go about it without harming either of the plants? 3) Or should I just leave it and hope for the best?
Haha love that! If I were you I'd probably try to remove it because their soil/watering needs aren't the same. To do so, carefully unpot them and try to detangle the roots. Pothos have fairly chunky roots, whereas marantas have fine ones, so you should be able to easily tell the difference. If you want more specific help, don't hesitate to reach out via IG and send me pics and I'll do my best to assist!
@@GoodGrowing I'm just now seeing your reply. I will try to do that then! Thank you so much! I've actually moved the plants out to my front porch and where I am located in north Mississippi with all this summer humidity they are actually both THRIVING. Still planning on separating them but I will need to acquire an extra pot or two first. :) Thank you again for replying and also for offering your help.
I bought one and it has a "vine" (for lack of the correct word) that is growing to the side complete with leaves? Is there a way to make this start to grow upright like a normal plant lol?
I have a question about some of my leggy prayer plants. One is so leggy, that it looks like a bare vine with a cluster of leaves at the end... almost like a lion's tail. Is there any way to remedy this? I feel bad for the plant, because it's so very pretty, but dang, it's leggy. Thanks!
I've never personally used a heat mat with them. And honestly I don't think I will because it would dry out the soil much faster and these babies much prefer to stay on the moister side.
My prayer plant is the red and has bloomed all winter, tiny pinkest flowers, I never knew they bloomed! I’ve seen people cut leaves and poke them back into the soil so the plant is fuller, is that ok? My plant has grown so much & hangs over the sides of my pot, it doesn’t stand up like yours, am I doing something wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong you can totally keep it as a trailing plant. And yes you can chop and prop straight back into the soil if you want a bushier plant
Such a fussy plant . Killed one. And bought another one. My house is superhot in the summer and very cold in the winter. I may give it to my aunt lol. Her house climate has better control. A lovely plant...Just too finikey for me
Hi! I have a calathea medallion, from Patch. After watering it and leaving it to drain, it's remained wet for two weeks. I also have a red chinese evergreen and kentia palm with the same problem. Patch's soil isn't very well draining. Because prayer plants are so temperamental, I think repotting it with more perlite will probably shock it (especially this time of year). How much do you water it, when you do? Do you totally soak the soil? I've been using filtered water, but I'm now thinking I should just use a smaller amount of water to avoid over saturating the soil.
I've also found patch's soil to be super dense and not well draining in the home. If you think it's going to be an issue, repot the plants. I'm sure they'd rather the slight shock of a move than to have potentially harmful long term effects of overwatering and root rot. When I water I thoroughly soak the soil and I usually use tap water just because it's easier for me.
Do you have some scientific proof about morning watering becouse you are so convinced in that? In nature plant probably can choose when rain will fall, right?
In nature, plants have much more ventilation and wind which evaporates the water in the soil and on the leaves, making it dry faster. In our homes, the air doesn't do that so it sits stagnant and can lead to fungal issues or rot. This is especially an issue at night because it's cooler and darker meaning the plant isn't absorbing as much, so moisture just sits there
It's just a joke but this plant must be very stresed the whole time It was moving unnecesarily on your hands during the video. 😆 Please leave this plant in peace. 😆.
Another tip: I stumbled upon this tidbit when I found the little plastic tag that came with the plant… On the back it stated that this type of plant is extremely sensitive to fluoride and chlorine, both of which are in our tap water. Same! I use the water from my fridge and microwave, or leave it on my counter to get to room temperature.
I had the same issue, and not just with this plant - those chemicals aren’t good for any plant. I have well water, and to soften it, we add salt crystals, and that stuff is so bad for plants. I was using spring water, but had problems with that too, so am now using distilled.

Is the soil staying constantly wet or too dry between waterings? Yellowing and drooping is typically a sign of watering issues.

Great video.. what happened at your hairdressers?
I bought one and it has a "vine" (for lack of the correct word) that is growing to the side complete with leaves? Is there a way to make this start to grow upright like a normal plant lol?
you could always trellis it up, but this plant is inherently not a climber so it will not grow upright without help
I have a question about some of my leggy prayer plants. One is so leggy, that it looks like a bare vine with a cluster of leaves at the end... almost like a lion's tail. Is there any way to remedy this? I feel bad for the plant, because it's so very pretty, but dang, it's leggy. Thanks!
When I have leggy plants I chop and prop and put those bits back into the original pot once they’re rooted
My red maranta opens up in the evening and stays up all night. Is this a problem? Just curious. Thanks for making these videos!
It doesn't sound like an issue. As long as the plant seems healthy otherwise, it's doing what it can to get the light it needs!
wooow i love ur shirt, where did u get it😍
I got it from depop but I think it's boohoo
My maranta always grows tiny leaves when I move it from one place to the other or if I’ve overwatered -_-
Hi, are we able to use heat pads to keep them warm ?
I've never personally used a heat mat with them. And honestly I don't think I will because it would dry out the soil much faster and these babies much prefer to stay on the moister side.
Mine has brown tips but I have a humidity meter and live by the ocean. It is always around 65% so I don' t know what is wrong!
Could be a watering issue?
Use distilled water only
Emma, I trust you..
Hehe thanks :)
Mine is struggling. I think I’m going several things wrong. Should I repot? There are several dead stems. And I need the water meter lol
Oh no! It's hard to say without seeing the plant. If you wanna DM me pics on instagram I may be able to better advise!
Thrips-gate!😂😂🤣
How do you make then stay up like that? Mine is completely horizontal, even at night when it's closed up. It feels like it's basically fallen over...
These plants tend to spread out rather than grow up. So if yours has long stems it could be too heavy to stay up. Is yours quite big?
My prayer plant is the red and has bloomed all winter, tiny pinkest flowers, I never knew they bloomed! I’ve seen people cut leaves and poke them back into the soil so the plant is fuller, is that ok? My plant has grown so much & hangs over the sides of my pot, it doesn’t stand up like yours, am I doing something wrong?
You're not doing anything wrong you can totally keep it as a trailing plant. And yes you can chop and prop straight back into the soil if you want a bushier plant
@@GoodGrowing thanks for the reply, I just didn’t want to kill my plant.
how did you get rid of the thrips though?
provanto
What about crispy leaves?
crispy leaves are usually due to too low of humidity
Do you know why my prayer plant doesn't raise his leaves at all? And it doesn't stand up like yours. It just droops over.
Not enough water or light
This is especially an issue at night because it's cooler and darker meaning the plant isn't absorbing as much, so moisture just sits there
Scientific proof?? What an odd comment! She is giving us her opinion and advice based on her experience! Go ahead and water at night if you want to.
I just bought a small one that needs to be reported but not sure when.
Repotted
Kinda hard to say without seeing pictures, dm me on insta if you want some advice x
you always give great advise plus I find you are very sweet
'Leuconeura' as in 'leukos' = White, 'neura' = Nerves 😃
well that makes sense then 😅
Not "thripsgate" 😂
great, all of mine r on the verge on death
Oh no!! Chop and prop!
LOL
Lol
Lol
Lol
Lol
It's just a joke but this plant must be very stresed the whole time It was moving unnecesarily on your hands during the video. 😆 Please leave this plant in peace. 😆.
You talk more about the red one and not the other I have the other one …..
They care is the same :) I'm just holding the red one cuz I felt like it while filming
