  • double top is the most important modern guitar building style. Double Top was invented by world famous German guitar maker Matthias Dammann in the late 1980s. Gernot Wagner give the idea of using Nomex interlayer in middle 1990s. Dammann and Wagner are the most important guitar maker for double top guitars.

First of all, thank you for this informative video. Much appreciated by a guitar maker such as myself. I have been struggling with the sound of Double Top guitars since I first heard one 20+ years ago. I've had a few in my workshop for repairs and adjustments and I found them to be difficult to love, sound wise. One was a Bruck, one was a Muller and one was a Kirschner. All 3 were beautifully crafted. But all 3 had the same problem. Some notes were very strong and some notes were weak, some rang forever and some did not. All 3 were Bass heavy. The trebles were weak. They were all very unbalanced and did not sound like a wooden top, but rather, something else all together. That said, some of what I heard was incredible. So, I started experimenting and built a few guitars with what I call the Desmond "Partial Double Top". I did not copy anyone else, first of all. Anyway, the results were impressive in many ways. The point is, Double Top guitars are HERE TO STAY. The younger players have been introduced to them and want them. So, if a guitar maker wants to stay in business, he or she better start making Double Top guitars, in some way or another. I'm not sure they fall into the category of "Guitars" anymore, but rather "Double Top Guitars" would be better. They are completely different sounding from a great Traditional classical guitar. So like all guitars, find one and buy it. You can never have only one guitar anyway. That's my take on Double Top guitars. Some of the best concert guitar players are demanding them, so that tells you something right there. Good day.

You forgot to say anything about unrealistic difference in price between double top and standard classical. Double top can be 5 times more expensive and what you get is not better at all.

Hi Robert, I am an amateur luthier. I too have played several double tops, and Smallman style lattice braced too that were not very good sounding, with some of the problems you point out. I'm not familiar with the partial double top that you refer to I'd like to learn more about that. You should check out th-cam.com/video/82ZV6URZM70/w-d-xo.html it's very interesting , and even more interesting is that most of the viewers did not choose the double top as the best sounding. I'm skeptical of the weight advantage from the double tops. If you research Torres guitars you will find that many of them had tops that are in the 1.5 - 1.7 mm thick range. I agree with you that the double top is almost a different instrument. The best double top that I have played was a Kenny Hill. Once upon a time people wanted to make the harpsichord louder. They did it and called it the piano. The piano is capable of things the harpsichord is not but if you listen to music that was written for the harpsichord played well on a harpsichord and then the same music played on the piano it's obvious that we lost something when we made the harpsichord louder. Pepe Romero Sr. said the musical performance is a joint effort of the composer, the player and the instrument maker, perhaps we makers need to show players the beauty of sound that is in those solid tops. Manuel Barrueco has gone back to playing his Ruck, and many of those other players only play their double tops when they feel they need the extra loudness but not otherwise.

Почему гитарные мастера и музыканты уверены, что вот это ездиние по ушам - именно то, что люди будут слушать?
Да от такого слушатель просто разбежится.
Искать надо инструмент у которого звук будет приятный для слушателя.

They all sound equally bad. Just get a traditional guitar and at least you'll have a proper balance. The bass on these instruments is very heavy and very loud. Just completely overwhelming. Do you not hear the woolf-note on the F#'s that you're playing. Listen to the third note of the Kleynjans piece. That F# is by far the loudest note. Very unattractive.

Interesting comment. If you listen to the other comparison video taken at the same session (look under the name Quingchuan Li), there is no heavy bass tilt.
