Saw this at the drive-in theater as a kid and loved the movie rooting for Chuck Heston and the marines….now I look at it after having read and understand the history with a completely different outlook ,I now see it as a jingoistic, xenophobic propaganda piece with enormous historical inaccuracies and perhaps to a degree racist….still a rather good theater inspite of its obvious flaws…
It's a pretty amazing film to look at. It would seem a little less full of orientalism if they'd at least hired some Chinese actors. I can't even imagine the slurs that Charlton Heston would've shouted if he found out some actual, real-life Chinese were wondering around set, touching all the props and looking at things.
@@Elcore not sure if what was reported is accurate but accordingly Heston had some tense moments on the set of “Major Dundee” First with Brock Peters and the other black actors, later with Richard Harris which he had a personal enmity towards …James Coburn was also a little aggravated at times…
Not quite Gore Vidal who was a screenwriter on Ben Hur claimed he made the eponymous character gay a charge Charlton Heston vigorously denied claiming that Gore Vidal was a writer for three days after which his work was discarded.
It's crazy the amount of actors they put in to fulfil these roles, for something filmed in 1963 I just can't Imagine the budget.
Not to mention that someone made dummies for the dead and trying to clime the walls and have things dropped on them?
It was 10 million dollars
And it was filmed in Spain.
That cannon was impressive but don't forget the Chinese invented gun powder.
The Boxers were courageous but courage was not enough.
If after a century they are still heard of, they will be heard over 1000 centuries.
Beautifully photography.
チャールトンへストンが主演した映画では、べンハーと猿の惑星と、この作品が好きですが、アクション性とドラマ性が見事に構成された内容で、私は1番、好きです。
